Different Phenolic Compounds Activate Distinct Human Bitter Taste Receptors
ABSTRACT
In 2009, German researchers found that the responsible sensory bitter receptors for alpha, iso-alpha acids and beta acids are the receptors hTAS2R1, hTAS2R14 and hTAS2R40, reacting with the different bitter acids. Another German team of researchers were also able to determine the bitter receptors reacting with different plant polyphenols, namely the receptors hTAS2R4, hTAS2R5, hTAS2R7, hTAS2R39. With this they also discovered that some of the individual thresholds of the polyphenolic substances are extremely low. So maybe there are very bitter polyphenolic substances also in beer we have not discovered so far.

UK: Microbrewing industry expanding to cater to Britain’s more discerning palate

Britain's love affair with quirkily named real ales and their demand for locally produced goods has led to a growing trend in microbreweries that cater to the more discerning palate, Reuters reported on May, 23.
More than 1,000 brewers now operate across the country compared to just over 800 in late 2011, some working out of little more than a large garage but competing for drinkers with giants such as SABMiller and Greene King in a $24.82 billion industry.
"We offer something different. We are not driven on a commercial bent to produce something that is universally popular," said Roland Kannor, managing director of the Brentwood Brewing Company, whose beers include Chockwork Orange and Marvellous Maple Mild.
"And it's nice to be selling something that people want to buy rather than have to buy."
With Britain only narrowly avoiding sinking into a triple-dip recession and wage growth failing to keep pace with inflation consumers have been careful about spending.
Still, campaigns supported by celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Nick Nairn have been launched to encourage people to shop locally while also getting something extra for their money.

The Czech Republic: Czech brewery sues consumer magazine over mycotoxins tests
|
A Czech brewery is taking the country’s leading consumer magazine to court over tests which detected high levels of mould in one of its brews, Radio.cz reported on May, 23.
The Svijany brewery questions the accuracy of the findings, as additional testing did not find increased levels of mycotoxins in its beer. In an email leaked to the press, the brewery’s manager also says that government subsidies for the magazine should be cut.
In its latest edition, the magazine dTest published the results of tests of 50 Czech beer brands for the presence of mycotoxins which are toxic chemicals produced by moulds. Out of the 50 samples, 37 were found to contain high levels of the substance. Long-term consumption of mycotoxins can lead to health problems and negatively affect the immune system.
The highest levels – 85 micrograms per litre – were detected in Svijanská kněžna, a dark beer produced by the Svijany brewery. In a bid to defend its reputation, Svijany had this and its other brews tested and found that the levels of the substance were within norm. World: Molson Coors announces quarterly dividend of $0.32 per share

Molson Coors Brewing announced a quarterly dividend on May 22nd, AnalystRatingsNetwork.com reports. Investors of record on Friday, May 31st will be paid a dividend of $0.32 per share on Monday, June 17th. This represents a $1.28 annualized dividend and a dividend yield of 2.48%. The ex-dividend date is Wednesday, May 29th.
A number of research firms have also recently commented on Molson Coors. Analysts at Nomura reiterated a “buy” rating on shares of Molson Coors Brewing in a research note to investors on Thursday, May 16th. They now have a $61.00 price target on the stock. On the ratings front, analysts at Stifel Nicolaus upgraded shares of Molson Coors Brewing from a “hold” rating to a “buy” rating in a research note to investors on Thursday, May 16th. They now have a $60.00 price target on the stock. Finally, analysts at Zacks reiterated a “neutral” rating on shares of Molson Coors Brewing in a research note to investors on Wednesday, May 8th. Germany: Barley exports jump fivefold in March 2013
|
German wheat exports, the European Union’s second-biggest after those of France, rose 4.7 percent in March from a year earlier. Barley shipments jumped fivefold, Bloomberg reported on May, 22.
Wheat deliveries advanced to 609,609 metric tons from 582,065 tons in March 2012, Germany’s statistics office reported on its website. The value of shipments climbed 30 percent to 164 million euros ($212 million).
Wheat exports in the first nine months of the marketing year begun in July were 5.31 million tons, against 4.1 million tons a year earlier, the figures showed.
Barley shipments jumped to 326,037 tons in March, the highest since April 2011, from 65,171 tons a year earlier. Nine-month exports of the grain rose to 1.53 million tons from 1 million tons.
Corn deliveries declined 6.9 percent to 69,179 tons from 74,273 tons in March last year, the data showed.
Imports of wheat into Germany rose to 308,597 tons in March from 294,491 tons a year earlier, while inbound corn shipments advanced to 189,154 tons from 165,445 tons.

UK: Growers urged to reconsider winter barley as second cereal
|
Strong wheat prices and fears over grassweed control have fuelled the growing of second wheats at the expense of winter barley in recent years in the UK, Farmers’ Weekly Interactive reported on May, 22.
But there are strong economic reasons to reconsider winter barley with one breeder urging growers to look again at the crop for the coming season.
Based on HGCA Recommended List (RL) data, over the past decade feed barley had yielded just 4.4% less than a second wheat, said commercial manager Julie Goult at a KWS press briefing held near Royston, Herts.
So using variable costs published by John Nix combined with DEFRA on-farm yield data, this equates to a gross margin of just £12/ha less than second wheat.
And on top of this, the extra value of barley straw over wheat adds another £30-40/ha and there are other benefits, such as an earlier entry for oilseed rape.
But as she pointed out, the HGCA RL data was for wheat and barley plots that are not grown in the same field. "So the figures are not directly comparable."
