Identification and Quantification of the Oxidation Products Derived from Alpha-Acids and Beta-Acids During Storage of Hops (Humulus lupulus L.)
ABSTRACT
We have a general idea about what is happening during hops storage in terms of degredation of bitter acids. But until now, it was not clear what the exact degredation products were and how these can be analysed. This Japanese research
team extensively investigated the reaction patterns during hop storage at different
temperatures and came to the following conclusion: The temperature for storage affects the oxidative reaction speed, but does not change the composition of generated hydrophilic oxidation products (humulinones, 4-hydroxyallohumulinones,
and hulupones). At 60 C, the observed compositional change curves resembled those at 40 C, while the reaction speed was about 10 times faster. Also the HPLC conditions to analyse these products are described. However, sensory experiments are needed to show what these findings mean in regard to beer quality.

USA: Beer volume sold during the month to May 11 drops 0.6%
|
Despite a tough few months for the beer business, overall sales in dollar terms inched up in May, due in part to the new upmarket Budweiser Black Crown's introduction to consumers, the Wall Street Journal said on May, 24.
According to Nielsen data, volume of beer sold in the four weeks to May 11 dropped 0.6 percent, but sales in dollar terms were up 1.5 percent, boosted by Black Crown sales.
Anheuser-Busch and MillersCoors both reported a bad month. However, Boston Beer Co., which produces the Samuel Adams brand, reported its overall sales were up 43 percent.

USA, ME: Maine breweries’ production increases
|
According to data recently obtained from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Liquor Licensing and Inspection Unit, output by Maine breweries in 2012 increased by more than 20 percent for the third year in a row, hispanicbusiness.com reported on May, 24.
Over a three-year period, from the end of 2009 through 2012, beer production by Maine breweries has increased from 4.1 mln gallons to 7.9 mln, or by more than 90 percent.
In 2010, the amount of beer produced by Maine breweries increased by 20 percent, from 4.1 mln gallons the previous year to nearly 5 mln. The following year, state wide beer production increased 30 percent, from 4.97 mln gallons to nearly 6.5 mln.
In 2012, all but one of the 13 largest breweries in the state saw their production rates increase from the prior year.
Because Maine is a small state, Dee Germain, the owner of the Portland's Allagash Brewing Company said, the growth in craft beer brewing is relatively more significant in Maine which, with 33 breweries, ranks fifth in the country with one brewery for every 40,000 residents, according to the national Brewers Association. Canada, ON: Innis & Gunn brewery releases a new line of beers in Canada
|
Scotland’s Innis & Gunn has announced details of five new beers that will be launched in Canada through the spring and summer months, including two limited edition barrel-aged ales and a new line of flavoured craft lagers, canadianbeernews.com reported on May, 24.
For the fifth year in a row, I&G will be thanking Canadian beer drinkers for their support with a special beer to celebrate Canada Day- this year’s edition is Innis & Gunn Canadian Cherrywood Beer.
Canadian Cherrywood will be available soon in BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, NB and NS, with price starting at C$4.95 per 330ml bottle.
Also coming soon is Innis & Gunn Scottish Pale Ale, a new addition to the brewery’s seasonal range.
Scottish Pale Ale will be available in BC, AB, SK, ON and NB starting late May or early June, and in NS starting July. It will also be available on draught in Ontario.
Joining these new arrivals from the main I&G brand are three beers in the I&G-owned Melville’s Craft Lager range – Melville’s Strawberry, Melville’s Raspberry and Melville’s Ginger Beer.
Each Melville’s beer is available in 4-packs of 275 ml bottles, with price starting at C$9.95 per pack.

USA, NC: Catawba Valley Brewing opens a second brewery in Asheville
|
Scott and Billy Pyatt, co-owners of Catawba Valley Brewing, announced the location of their second brewery – Asheville North Carolina, mountainx.com reported on May, 27.
Billy Pyatt said, “I don’t think we’re going to have quite as many restrictions on what we can and can’t do [as if we were in the village], but we certainly want to build something that looks good and functions the way we want it to function.”
If all goes according to plan, the site will function in a few ways: It will be part brewery, part tasting room and part distribution centre.
The brewery will start off with a seven-barrel brewhouse, five fermentors and three brite tanks. In its early days, the Pyatts expect to produce about 750 to 1,000 barrels of beer per year. “What we make here is going to be geared towards the Asheville palate," Billly said.
On-site, there will be about a dozen taps, similar to Catawba’s main facility in Morganton. The majority will flow with Catawba beers, though there could be guest beers or collaborations from time to time.

Canada, ON: Whitewater Brewing opens in Upper Ottawa Valley, Canada
|
Whitewater Brewing has been in planning since late 2011, and started offering beer to the public earlier this month, canadianbeernews.com reported on May, 22.
Whitewater Brewing has launched with four new brands – Farmer’s Daughter Blonde Ale, Whistling Paddler English Style Ale, Class V IPA, and Midnight Oatmeal Stout.
Whitewater beers are currently available to customers at Wilderness Tours Rafting and at occasional special events in the area. Growler sales and draught availability in local bars and restaurants are planned to be launched soon, and the partners also hope to open a brewpub adjacent to the brewery in the future.

USA, CO: Beer By Design opens in Northglenn
|
Northglenn, Colorado is preparing for opening the first craft brewery, Beer By Design, craftbeer.com reported on May, 27.
After being introduced to home-brewed beer in the early 90’s, Vance Sabbe, co-owner of Northglenn Co, began pursuing the perfect process for creating a great tasting beer. His first brew kit led to another and about six months into it, Vance started a home brew shop – selling supplies for home brewers. He also developed a portable brewing system – “Port-A-Brewery” which he sold online for some time.
In November 2012, construction began on the 5,000 square foot space that would become Beer By Design Brewery.
The philosophy behind Northglenn, CO’s first craft brewery is that fresh quality beer produced locally, using the finest ingredients and without chemicals in processing or for preservation is the key to success among beer drinking enthusiasts.
Beer By Design will start with a soft opening on June 1st with a grand opening event to follow later in the month. During their tap room hours, the brewery will offer tours to the public. Steamworks Brewing has announced release details for a limited seasonal beer that is described as being like “summer in a bottle”, canadianbeernews.com reported on May, 23.
Steamworks Frambozen is a 7% abv raspberry ale available now in 650 ml bottles at BC Liquor locations and private liquor stores throughout British Columbia.

Big Rock Brewery has announced the release of the latest instalment in the Alchemist Edition series of limited edition one-off beers, canadianbeernews.com reported on May, 27.
Cherazz is a Belgian-style ale that was aged for six weeks on cherries and raspberries.
Big Rock Cherazz will be available exclusively on draught at select bars and restaurants in Alberta while supplies last.

USA, CO: Grimm Brothers Brewhouse releases Over My Dead Body India Pale Lager
|
Grimm Brothers Brewhouse will debut Over My Dead Body India Pale Lager (IPL) on Friday, May 31st, 2013, beerpulse.com reported on May, 24.
This will be a draft only release and generally available throughout the market.
“An IPL is not a typical beer for us”, stated Don Chapman, President of Grimm Brothers. “We’re more focused on German styles and in fact I’ve been known to say that we’d brew a beer like this ‘over my dead body’. Things change, I’m still alive.”
The IPL recipe was developed by Grimm founder Aaron Heaton and was championed by Director of Marketing, Paul Ferguson, who participated in the brewing. “We decided to let the marketing guy take a shot at a brew”, added Chapman.
The name, Over My Dead Body, was inspired both by Chapman’s earlier sentiments and by the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tale, The Three Snake-Leaves.

USA, TX: Lakewood Brewing Co. releases Lady of the Lake
|
Lakewood Brewing Co.'s founder and brewer, Wim Bens, released the second beer in a Legendary Series of beers, the Lady of the Lake, dallasobserver.com reported on May, 26.
The first in the series was Brabo's Cut, named after a Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo.
The second in Lakewood's legendary line is La Dame de Lac, which pays homage to local urban legend,the Lady of the Lake.
In honor of the lady of the lake, Lakewood Brewing has whipped up a bière de garde. La Dame de Lac will launch Thursday, May 30th at the Common Table, and will be available on tap and in bottles elsewhere soon after.

The owner of the brewery chain Tramite Holding SpA in north Italy, Giantonino Tramet, and Jagodina brewery, Serbia, agreed on a partnership at a meeting on May, 27, ANSAmed reported.
Jagodina mayor Dragan Markovic said it was agreed that the owner of Tramite, Gianantonio Tramet, will visit the Jagodinska brewery on June 10, and the start of business was expected in September at the latest.
“We are expecting Tramet to buy Jagodinska brewery or make investments in the production and marketing,” he explained.
Tramet pointed out that he was ready to make business with Jagodinska brewery and that he was hoping that on June 10 he would sign a concrete contract on cooperation and agree on concrete beer amounts that would be distributed to the Serbian and foreign market.

Turkey: Government moves to restrict alcohol sales and ban advertising

The government in Turkey is making a move to restrict alcohol sales and ban advertisements, which has alcohol producers worried and secular Turks concerned that the government has an Islamist agenda, the Wall Street Journal reported on May, 28.
Last Friday, May, 24, Parliament passed a bill that would ban retail alcohol sales between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm, as well as completely ban alcohol advertising and promotions of alcohol-related products.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the new regulations are intended to bring Turkey in line with other “advanced economies” such as the United States.
Meanwhile, secular Turks are criticizing the new regulations, saying the legislative package “builds on a series of restrictions” introduced by Erdogan’s “Islamist-leaning Justice and Development Party, which swept to power in 2002, ending the staunchly secularist military's decades long hold over civilian politics,” writes the newspaper.
Some also say that the government's curb on alcohol follows a pattern — such as failed attempts at more conservative uniforms and a ban on red lipstick at Turkish Airlines — which could jeopardize its broad support over the past five years.

Tanzania: Rising disposable income and expanding population laying the foundation for growh in the beer industry
|
No longer is beer just a social lubricant – it has become big business in Tanzania, Ventures reported on May, 26.
It was not long ago that low consumption of alcohol, particularly beer, in the country jaded investors on the potential of the sector. Tanzania currently ranks as the 6th biggest beer market in Africa, according to a report by Deutsche Bank. This ranking is an optimistic change but does not speak to the increasing potential in the country.
Tanzania’s rising spending power (or disposable income) and expanding population lay the foundation for the growth. The country lacks the stringent laws on distribution and sale of alcohol beverages vastly associated with Kenya. Popular beers such Tanzabeer can be found in the United Kingdom. Still some hurdles remain.
A large Muslim population, for example, helps to explain the lower alcohol consumption as compared to Kenya. Capacity expansion is often myriad of problems that extend beyond simple capital injection. Absent large commercial farming, sourcing barley requires building a strong and reliable network of smallholder farmers. Developing a local management team exposes the challenges the country faces in building a sufficiently skilled labor force.
