Advances in hop aroma research - how much do we know today, oral lecture at EBC 2013 Luxembourg

ABSTRACT
Though we have a basic understanding about which components can be attributable to floral, citrus, fruity, spicy, herbal and woody flavours, the very unique aromas of hoppy beers cannot be fully explained. The challenge is to understand aroma interactions, the release of aroma components by yeast, the formation of aroma active thiols and our personal perception of volatiles. So there are enough questions on hop aroma to look well into in the future.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev, Constellation Brands seek dismissal of private antitrust lawsuit
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV seeks dismissal of a private antitrust lawsuit alleging its $20 billion acquisition of Grupo Modelo SAB will lead to higher beer prices, while nine customers who filed the lawsuit asked a judge to postpone the deal, Bloomberg reported on June, 4.

Budweiser-maker AB InBev, the world’s largest beer company, agreed as part of the merger for winemaker Constellation Brands Inc. to buy the stake that Modelo holds in their joint U.S. distribution venture for $1.85 billion. AB InBev called the customers’ claims that the deal will allow it to control Constellation and conspire to raise beer prices “outlandish and completely unsupportable.” Constellation also asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit.

AB InBev made binding commitments in the U.S. Justice Department-supported transaction to turn Constellation into a competing brewer that will produce and control all of Mexico City-based Modelo’s brands in the U.S., including Corona, the country’s biggest import, AB InBev said in filings on June, 3 in federal court in San Francisco.

The antitrust complaint “should be seen for what it is: the latest in a line of shakedown attempts by plaintiff’s counsel premised on baseless assertions of fact,” said Allen Ruby, AB InBev’s attorney.

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery looking for new licence deals and interstate sales to sustain growth
Australia’s Coopers Brewery is looking for new licence deals and interstate sales to sustain the growth it has recorded over the past two decades, News.com.au reported on May, 31.

Coopers managing director Dr Tim Cooper said the company was about to conclude 20 years of continuous growth at an average 9.9 per cent a year.

"It is going to be harder (as the base grows) but we reckon there's still scope to keep growing our volumes," he said.

"We may never reach 10 per cent of the national market, but we certainly think we can get to 7 per cent. It may take us another 10 years but we think we can get there."

Coopers accounts for 4.3 per cent of the total national volume.

"We'd like to expand the portfolio even though there are fewer opportunities because of consolidation in the industry globally," Dr Cooper said.

Expanding on comments made to a Committee for Economic Development of Australia forum, Dr Cooper said that things had to change.

"We at Coopers are lucky in a way that for a company of our size with a turnover approaching A$200 million, we don't employ a lot of people," he said.

"We only employ 130 people here. Most companies with our ...More info on site

Brewery news Bulgaria: Fruit beer popularity rises among both men and women
Fruit beer conquers Bulgaria’s market, studies show. As compared to last year, twice as many people are buying a combination of beer with lemon or grapefruit. Thus, the market share of this type of beverage is now 2%, Bulgarian beer producer Zagorka reported on June, 3.

Most fans of the combination of beer and fruit juice are among women and men aged between 18 and 35, the findings of the producers show. According to their data, this kinds of mixes is consumed primarily at home, with only 29% of sales in restaurants.

Fruit beers are more popular with women (54% of users), but more and more men are also beginning to reach out for them. The trend is that the number of fans of mixes is on the grow Carlsberg Bulgaria confirmed. Not surprisingly, this year almost all manufacturers marketed a "radler" type beverage, the industry commented.

Brewery news Slovakia: Recent boom in craft beer industry leads to increased interest in beer tourism
Slovakia is not on most people’s radar when it comes to the production or consumption of beer. But a recent boom in reviving old breweries and launching small, new local breweries has made it a place of interest for so-called beer tourists, who are eager to travel far and wide to sample new and different flavours, The Slovak Spectator reported on June, 3.

Numerous plans to open new breweries and pubs across the country prove that this trend is on the rise. Thus, in addition to its abundance of wine destinations, Slovakia can add beer to its list of attractions.

“Prospects for development of beer tourism in Slovakia are very good, especially because the tourist is looking for something exceptional,” Ladislav Kovács, the vice-chairman of the Association of Small Independent Breweries of Slovakia and the director of Kaltenecker, a small brewery in Rožňava, is quoted as saying.

He believes that a small brewery can provide exactly this: visitors can taste special, locally brewed beers directly in the brewery while experiencing the atmosphere of the place where the beer is brewed. “He [the beer enthusiast] is walking between tanks [and] production technologies, and is watching and tasting beer directly from the tanks, ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation waiting for approval of indigenisation plan for three years already
Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed industrial concern Delta Corporation Limited, an associate of SABMiller, says it is still waiting for a response from government on an indigenisation plan submitted three years ago, the group chief executive was quoted as saying by News Day on June, 5.

The Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act requires foreign-owned companies with a net asset value of $500 000 or more to sell a 51% stake to indigenous people.

Speaking at the Imara Capital Investment conference in Harare, Delta CEO Pearson Gowero on Monday, June, 3 said: “We have no clearance, but we comply with the country’s laws. As a business we have submitted an indigenisation plan, as of today our plan has not been signed off since 2010.”

According to the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) as of January 31, 2013, the top three shareholders for Delta were Stanbic Nominees (22.79%), SABMiller Zimbabwe (21.86%) and Rainier incorporated with 15.75% shareholding.

Market watchers say foreign investors would surpass the 51% threshold, as Delta has been a favourite stock for foreign investors on ZSE. Major manufacturing concerns such as cigarette maker British American Tobacco have already partially complied with the empowerment law.

Gowero said the company would continue to engage government regarding the Indigenisation Act.
