Fruits from the Hallertau
ABSTRACT
Specifically looking into the brewing properties of the new hop varieties from the Hallertau was the task of A. Forster. Using whirlpool hopping and dry hopping in standardised brewing trials he concluded that the dosing of hops should be based on the oil content for a consistent aroma. Beer brewed with Mandarina Bavaria and Hallertau Melon were preferred over beers with Hallertau Blanc. The latter variety, associated with white wine flavours, polarised the assessors. In terms of bitterness, the quality of bitterness of whirlpool and dry hopped beers was equal.

Vietnam: Heineken “absolutely on top” of counterfeiting issues
|
Heineken insists it is “absolutely on top” of the counterfeiting issues that can appear in emerging markets, after a Vietnamese gang producing fake Tiger and Heineken was busted last week, Beverage Daily reported on June, 26.
According to Heineken, the suspects mixed genuine Heineken or Tiger beer with other beers – with an estimated counterfeit production rate of less than 50 crates per day – then delivered the counterfeit products to outlets (reportedly restaurants, eateries) in the Tan Binh District of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).
John-Paul Schuirink, Heineken financial communications manager, said: “Although it typically concerns small volumes and all international brewers are confronted with counterfeit beers in emerging markets from time to time, we absolutely are on top of this issue.”
Describing Heineken as the leader in the international premium segment, Schuirink said that the quality and integrity of the world’s third-largest brewer’s beers was vital.
“Our consumers deserve to enjoy a real Heineken beer when they buy or order one. We are working closely with the authorities and other brewers to fight these brand infringements”, he said.
Vietnam Brewery Limited – which brews and distributes Heineken and Tiger in the country – said on June, 21 that it had successfully stopped counterfeiting

South Korea: Changing tastes and planned beer reform in South Korea expected to lead to craft beer boom at last
|
If there’s one key art form where North Korea beats the South, it’s beer-making, Global Post reported on June, 26.
Pyongyang is home to Taedonggang, a government-made, full-bodied lager that The New York Times called one of the finest beers on the Korean peninsula. The beverage is named after Pyongyang’s Taedong River.
In 2000, North Korea’s former ambassador to Switzerland backed a plan to take apart and ship home an entire 180-year-old British brewery. The edifice was reassembled in the isolated state, despite the seller’s fears that the machinery could be used to make chemical weapons.
South Korea lacks similar tales of globe-trotting beer quest. For decades, a maze of regulations has protected big South Korean brewers and their dull beer, smothering the entrepreneurial creativity that North Korea showed with Taedonggang.
Before 2007, drinkers stuck in the south could purchase legally-imported Taedonggang at DMZ tourist shops along the North-South border, and at a handful of Seoul Bars. It’s not a superstar beverage. The lager tastes more like ale. But it is exotic — a slightly sweet alternative to the deadening South Korean fare.
Sadly, Taedonggang has vanished from the south due to an unexplained price hike.
But tastes are changing, and South Koreans are pushing back.

Jamaica: Diageo confirms executive changes at Red Stripe beer division
|
Diageo has confirmed a raft of executive changes at its Red Stripe beer division that will see the unit’s HR director leave the company later this year.
In a notification to the Jamaica Stock Exchange late last week, the company said that Red Stripe’s finance director, Jed Dryer, has seen out his three-year rotation in the role and will shift to the headquarters of Diageo’s Latin America & Caribbean (LAC) arm in Miami. Dryer will assume the role of finance director for projects, but will remain on the board of Diageo’s Jamaican sales and distribution JV with PepsiCo bottler Cabcorp, Celebration Brands.
Replacing Dryer as finance director at Red Stripe on an interim basis will be the division’s group financial controller, Vernon Douglas.
Meanwhile, Lisa Lewis, Red Stripe’s HR director, will leave the role at the end of this month and will be the HR director for projects at Diageo’s WestLAC sub-division until the end of September. Thereafter, Lewis will leave Diageo “to pursue other interests”.
“As a result of a reorganisation of the operations in Red Stripe,” the statement said, “the role of human resources director will no longer exist as of 30 June.”
Lewis has spent the last five years working for Diageo.

Argentina: Government halts wheat exports to fight rising flour, bread prices
|
Argentina's government has halted wheat exports as it grapples with rising prices for flour and bread, a staple of the Argentine diet, the Wall Street Journal reported on June, 26.
The government has informed exporters that it won't authorize further shipments from the 2012-13 crop, said a person from the grain export sector, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The government also ordered grain exporters to sell about 370,000 metric tons of wheat to local millers that was about to be shipped abroad, he said.
Local media reported on June, 26 that Domestic Commerce Secretary Guillermo Moreno met with grain exporters earlier this week to inform them of the restrictions on wheat and flour exports. Spokespersons for Mr. Moreno and the Agriculture Ministry declined to comment.
The measures will likely force Brazil - the top buyer of Argentine wheat - to turn to other markets such as the U.S. or Canada to meet its demand for the grain. Argentina was the world's seventh-largest wheat exporter during the 2012-13 crop year, according to the USDA.
Argentina heavily regulates wheat exports to keep food prices low. Those controls have angered farmers, who for years complained their crop fetched far less at home than on international markets.
