How to assess the sensory impact of hop varieties used in the boiling process
ABSTRACT
We all know the dilemma of estimating the contribution of a hop variety to the beer flavor when used during boiling. These Japanese researchers propose a standardized protocol for a sensory evaluation of single variety hop samples boiled in water. Using PCA they found that fruity descriptors could be connected to the varieties
Citra and a new Japanese variety called Fuano Beauty whereas Saaz and Mittelfrueh hop samples were connected with herbal, tea and spicy flavours. This protocol may help to forecast the flavour contribution of different varieties in the final beer when used as late hop in the wort boiling process.

USA, CO: New Belgium to enter the beer market of Utah
|
New Belgium Brewing signed an agreement with eight distribution partners in Utah with plans to start selling beer in the state later this summer, Beer Pulse reported on July, 25.
The distributors, which are all part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev network, are General Distributing, Big Four Distributing, Wasatch Distributing, Tooele Beverage, Marty’s Distributing, C&H Distributing, Bald Eagle Distributing and Bowtie Beverage. One of the brands from New Belgium’s portfolio that will be certainly distributed is12-oz. packages of Fat Tire.
In addition to Utah, New Belgium will be opening in Florida later this month (July 29) and recently announced plans to expand into Delaware (August 19) and British Columbia (September 9). Currently, New Belgium is in 31 states and the District of Columbia.

Canada, ON: Ontario Government to extend Ontario Microbrewery Strategy Funding to 2016
|
At a media event held at Toronto’s Steam Whistle Brewery, Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment Dr. Eric Hoskins announced that the Ontario Microbrewery Strategy is being extended for two years to 2015-16, Canadian Beer News reported on July, 25.
According to the Strategy, C$1.2 million of annual funding will be provided to the Ontario Craft Brewers to help the organization and its member breweries with costs related to marketing and other promotional activities.
“Ontario’s award-winning craft brewers are creating jobs and contributing to the growth of our economy,” said Dr. Hoskins in a statement. “Extending the microbrewery strategy will help support the success of this thriving industry, not just by supporting brewers themselves, but by supporting the spin-off jobs they create through their success including in local agriculture and in the hospitality industry.”
“We’re proud to work with the Ontario government to bring more attention to the fine products made by our province’s craft brewers,” added John Hay, President of the Ontario Craft Brewers. “Ontario has tremendous brewing talent and we thank the Ontario government for helping support and grow the opportunities for Ontario craft beer makers.”

USA, MI: Atwater Brewery and Meijer collaborate in order to release a new beer
|
Two well-known and highly-regarded Michigan institutions, Atwater Brewery and Meijer, are teaming up to bring a new craft beer to market, Beer Pulse reported on July, 25.
State Fair Pale Ale was introduced earlier this week at the grand opening of Meijer’s newest location in the Gateway Marketplace. Meijer’s first store in Detroit is the result of a $20 million investment in the city.
State Fair Pale Ale is just beyond deep gold in color, edging into copper. As with all Atwater brands, the beer fully meets the brewer’s singular focus on producing the highest quality craft beers on the market.
State Fair Pale Ale will be sold exclusively through Meijer’s starting with the 32 metro Detroit locations.

USA, LA: SweetWater Brewing Company to open in Louisiana
|
After their recent entrance into the state of Kentucky, SweetWater Brewery is preparing for another big launch for the locals of Louisiana this August, Brew Bound reported on July 26.
SweetWater has opened up distribution into new states since 2008 due to previous production capacity.
Louisiana marks the eighth U.S. state to be included in brewery’s distribution footprint. SweetWater has partnered with Southern Eagle Distributing in New Orleans, Champagne Beverage Company in North Shore/Covington, and Mockler Beverage Company in Baton Rouge. Beers will begin flowing on draft taps starting the week of August 19.
SweetWater is bringing their unpasteurized ales to the area starting with 420 Extra Pale Ale on draft at on-premise bars and restaurants, alongside six-packs and 12-pack variety bottles in off-premise grocery stores, package stores, and specialty bottle shops including: 420 Extra Pale Ale; SweetWater; SweetWater and SweetWater Tackle.
A crew from SweetWater will taste their way around the area with sampling celebrations and sponsored events Aug. 21 in Baton Rouge, LA and Aug. 22 in New Orleans, LA.

USA, NC: Bombshell Beer Co. to open in Holly Springs
|
The first all-female-owned brewery, Bombshell Beer Co. is set to open in September in Holly Springs, News Observer reported on July, 25.
Bombshell expects to open the place with beers that include German pilsner, pale ale, Indian pale ale and porter. The owners will also offer specialty beers, including jalapeno, lemongrass and coconut. They want to appeal to a broad beer-drinking audience, one that includes people who might not be into craft beer, by offering lighter brews and beers with fruit and citrus that “a wine drinker might enjoy.”We are working as a team to develop a lot of the market recipes,” Miniutti said, one of the three owners.
The trio hired Stephen O’Neill from Church Brew Works in Pittsburgh to be the head brewer and develop creative beers that aren’t available at other breweries.
The place will have a 1,500-square-foot tasting room and sell offerings in flights, pints, growlers and kegs. The place is still working on its pricing and occupancy, but hopes to seat around 90.

USA, CA: Moylan’s Brewery to launch Going, Going, Gone Saison
|
Moylan’s Brewery announced the release of the Going, Going, Gone Saison, the newest addition to their artisan craft beer line up, Brew Bound reported on July, 26.
The Going, Going, Gone Saison is a crisp, refreshing Saison inspired by new Brewmaster, Derek Smith, who wanted the perfect Saison to pair with summer baseball games.
Going, Going, Gone Saison is currently available at Moylan’s Brewery and Restaurant by draft, growler, or keg. Derek Smith will also be pouring the Going, Going, Gone Saison and other award-winning Moylan’s beers during a “Meet the Brewer” event at Barclay’s Restaurant and Pub on Tuesday, July 30th.

USA, WI: Lakefront Brewery plans to open a second facility
|
Lakefront Brewery announced today that it has obtained an option to purchase 9.3 acres of land in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley, putting it on the growing list of craft breweries looking to open a second production facility, Brew Bound reported on July, 24.
Lakefront joins a handful of craft breweries, including Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, Oskar Blues, Victory Brewing, Lagunitas Brewing, Green Flash Brewing and Epic Brewing, that have built or are building secondary facilities.
The Milwaukee-based brewery produces the popular gluten-free beer New Grist. It has been steadily growing since 2005, when it brewed just 6,300 barrels. Last year, Lakefront’s production increased 42 percent to 33,000 barrels. Klisch said the new space could be scaled to produce nearly 10 times that amount.
The brewery is anticipating another year of steady growth and hopes to produce over 40,000 barrels in 2013. Lakefront’s Commerce Street brewery has a maximum capacity of about 50,000 barrels and, if the company is successful in obtaining the new Menomonee Valley property, the existing space would likely be used for new projects.

USA, WA: Redhook Brewery releases Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter
|
Redhook Brewery, the Northwest’s original craft brew, announced that its new Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter will be released on August 5th and will be available through September 30th, Beer Pulse reported on July, 25.
Released in New England markets only last year and named “one of the most drinkable pumpkin beers we’ve ever had”, the Pumpkin Porter will be available nationally this year. Fans are encouraged to stock up early for this limited edition beer.
Redhook Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter will be available in 6 and 12packs of 12 oz bottles and in individual 22 oz bottles. Draught beer will be poured with a cleaver-shaped tap handle as a nod to pumpkin carving. ABV 5.8%; IBU 20.

USA,TN: Blackhorse Brewery opened in Knoxville
|
In 2012 the Brewers' Association reported an 18 percent increase in operating breweries. Knoxville, Tennessee became recently a part of this increasing process, by hosting a new brewery, WIBR reported on July, 25.
The Blackhorse Pub and Brewery recently opened its new Knoxville location in Sequoya Hills.
They brew several types of craft beer on location, and the manager says whole idea of craft beer is becoming more popular.
The company is based in Clarksville, Tennessee and expanded into the Knoxville market after this location became available.

Canada, BC: Old Yale releases Outta Wack Mango Wheat Ale
|
Old Yale Brewing has announced the release of a new fruit-infused summer seasonal ale, Canadian Beer News reported on July, 25.
Outta Wack Mango Wheat was named via a “Name Our Beer” contest at the District Public House in Chilliwack.
Outta Wack is available now in 650 ml bottles at select private liquor stores in British Columbia. A launch party for the beer will take place at the District Public House (45975 Wellington Avenue, Chilliwack) on Saturday July 27th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

EU: The Belgian Brewers’ Federation challenges the French Government’s beer tax hike
|
The Belgian Brewers' Federation has submitted an appeal to the European Commission, challenging the French Government's decision to raise the tax on beer by 160 percent at the beginning of the year. The Brewers of Europe association has followed suit, Tax-News reported on July, 24.
The French Government increased the specific tax on beer by 22 cents per litre from January 1, 2013, within the framework of its 2013 social security finance law. The measure formed part of efforts to reduce excessive alcohol consumption, particularly among the young as a matter of priority.
At the time, the Government defended the provision, arguing that the existing tax rate was particularly low compared to rates applied in other European countries. The Government insisted that preventative action was therefore needed to ensure that it becomes financially more difficult in future to access alcoholic products.
Outraged by the decision, President of the Belgian Brewers' Federation Sven Gatz highlighted the fact that a light beer in France now costs ten times as much as a glass of wine. China: Craft beer industry in China expected to be supported by a growing middle class

On the surface China’s craft beer market isn’t all that impressive. According to Ratebeer.com, China has about 30 microbreweries and brew pubs. And the recently formed China Craft Brewers Association has only five member breweries. That’s tiny compared to the craft brewing industry in the United States, which currently has 2,360 craft breweries and saw sales double from 2007 to 2012, Smart Planet reported on July, 25.
And while China is consuming more than 50 billion litres of beer a year (the most in the world), four major beer producers — SABMiller, AB InBev, Tsingtao, and Beijing Yanjing Brewery — account for about 60 percent of the market.
Even so, it would be wise not to overlook China’s craft beer industry because of a growing middle class.
“With continued rapid rises in average incomes and the general feel-good factor about China’s continued economic growth, consumers are not only drinking more beer, but are also beginning to drink more expensive beers,” said Matthew Crabbe, Director of China Research at research firm Mintel, about a report on China’s beer market last year. “Consumer confidence has also translated into more people going out to eat, and this caused catering sales to continue to see an increase

Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corporation reports drop in lager sales, other segments record growth in Q1
|
Delta Corporation Ltd., Zimbabwe’s biggest company by market value, said fiscal first-quarter revenue rose 8 percent as consumers shifted to a local traditional drink following a tax increase on lager, Bloomberg reported on July, 24.
Volume in the three months through June increased 4 percent from a year earlier, with all segments recording growth except for an 8 percent drop in lager consumption, Harare-based Delta said in a statement published in the Herald newspaper on July, 24. Maheu traditional brew volume surged 80 percent, sparkling-beverage consumption jumped 13 percent and sorghum beer sales rose 6 percent, it said.
Lager beer sales in Zimbabwe have been curbed by an excise duty increase in December 2012 and a lack of small coinage in a multi-currency economy. The company said it’s in talks with the government on the effects of the tax increase.
Delta Corporation Ltd. is an affiliate of SABMiller Plc, the world’s second-largest brewer, which holds a stake of 25 percent, according to the London-based company’s annual report for the year through March.

Japan: Japan’s brewers innovating in beer cocktails
|
Japan seems to have put its genius for creative innovation to work in another field of popular consumer demand - the beer cocktail, The Wall Street Journal reported on July, 26.
Midway through the summer sweat-bath, Japanese beer makers have been devising all manner of beer-based cocktails and specially chilled concoctions to slake the nation’s thirst.
Kirin Brewery Co., the nation’s second-largest brewer, is promoting a cocktail based on its premium Ichiban Shibori, called the Ichiban Shibori Two-Tone Draft. It is made by slowly pouring the beer into a glass with liqueur or soft drink, using a special hand-held strainer to prevent the ingredients from mixing too much, creating a two-tone layer in the middle of the glass. Kirin recommends combining Ichiban Shibori with cassis, lemon liqueur, grape juice or even stout.
Kirin hopes this will appeal to young people and women who prefer a sweeter taste than the usual bitterness of beer. While you can make these cocktails at home, they can also be quaffed at temporary, summertime “pop-up” bars called Kirin Ichiban Gardens in Tokyo and five other cities.

Swaziland: SABMiller’s subsidiary upgrades bottling equipment
|
Swaziland beer drinkers face a thirst-inducing shortage of brews in the coming weeks, as the kingdom's biggest brewery upgrades its bottling equipment, AFP said on July, 25.
A local subsidiary of brewing giant SABMiller said a US$6.1 million (S$7.72 million) project to replace an ageing bottling line has shut down beer production, but not that of soft drinks or traditional brews.
Ms Sharon Maziya of Swaziland Beverages sought to allay panic, saying the shortage would last approximately two weeks.
"We are almost done and should be up and running shortly." The company makes several beers locally, including lagers, a milk stout and a pilsner.

The Japan Fair Trade Commission on July, 23 notified Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) of its approval of ADM’s proposed acquisition of GrainCorp Limited.
This brings the number of government agencies that have cleared the acquisition to five.
South Africa’s Competition Commission and Canada’s Competition Bureau cleared the acquisition earlier this month, and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission did so in June. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission also approved the acquisition last November.
ADM continues to work with regulators in Australia, China, the E.U. and South Korea.
