ABSTRACT
Peacock suggested in 1980 that the oxygenated fraction of hop oil, although relatively small in concentration, is critical to the sought-after noble hop aroma. A group of US researchers has tested it. By storing Mittelfrueh hops in prooxidative
conditions, the GCMS results show a clear increase in terpenoids and oxygen-containing compounds and a simultaneous decrease interpenes and hydrocarbon compounds. The sensory quality of these oxidized aroma compounds were described with herbal, spicy, woody, and earthy odors, which are associated with a “noble” hop character. However of course, the HSI value increases and alpha and beta acids
are degraded. Brewing trials are planned to determine the impact on hop aroma in beer.

Germany & USA: Paulaner opens its first US microbrewery
|
Paulaner International opens its first U.S. microbrewery, Paulaner Brauhaus & Restaurant NYC (Paulaner Bräuhaus NYC), in New York City’s Bowery in August. This will be Paulaner International’s first brauhaus in the U.S. and the flagship for the development of more Paulaner Bräuhaus establishments throughout the country, Newsday reported on August, 1.
The world’s leading exporter of Bavarian beer, Paulaner, under the umbrella of Paulaner Bräuhaus Consult GmbH, operates over 25 microbreweries worldwide.
The 3-set brew-house has a capacity of 10HL, 8.5 US BBL with an annual maximum production of 2000 HL, approximately 1700 US BBL. The fermentation and storage room consists of two 10 HL cylindro-conical wheat beer tanks, one 20 HL fermentation vessel, two 20 HL flat conical storage tanks and three 20 hl cylindro-conical universal tanks. Total fermentation and storage capacity will be 140 HL. Paulaner’s exclusive beers will be brewed on-site including classic Hefeweizen, Munich Lager and Munich Dark. Select seasonal beers such as “Salvator,” “Oktoberfest,” and “Maibock” will also be featured.
Munich-based Paulaner is one of the most popular beers in the world. More than two million hectolitres leave the brewery every year for distribution to more than 70 countries.

The stop-start harvest is set to pick up speed this week in the UK as showers make way for sunshine with yields of early-cut winter barley looking encouraging, AllAboutFeed reported on August, 1.
Rain halted many combines early this week with winter barley crops harvested showing yields averaging around a respectable 7.5t/ha.
With only about 5% of the winter barley crop cut, early reports point to a harvest of better yields than expected considering the poor state of crops earlier this year.
Grain traders say with drier weather forecast later this week and into the weekend, the winter barley harvest could soon really get under way across most of England.
Although with winter wheat some way off harvest, and a lot of spring barley and rapeseed being sown they warned that combines could keep rolling well into September.
Those crops cut so far have largely been sown early and established well before the wet and cold winter and the grains had largely filled before the summer heatwave.

Canada: Old barley crop prices expected to drop charply in the near term
|
The new-crop barley harvest is roughly two weeks away in southern Alberta, meaning old-crop prices are expected to drop sharply in the near term, an Alberta broker was quoted as saying by Grainews on July, 31.
“There still is a huge inverse of old to new crop and that’s starting to reconcile itself,” said Jim Beusekom, grain broker with Market Place Commodities in Lethbridge.
“Lethbridge barley moved from C$295 per tonne to C$255 per tonne recently. The new crop is trading at C$210 per tonne, so there’s still another C$40 per tonne drop to go.”
“Like we saw in the canola market, there was also a massive inverse. The same thing is going to happen with barley over the next several weeks,” Beusekom added.
However, Beusekom said there is a small window for some producers in southern Alberta to harvest barley early and take advantage of the old crop prices.
“Some producers that start harvest in the next week can probably pick up some old-crop pricing,” he said. “But after that, it’s game over and on to new-crop prices.”

Ukraine: 6.2 mln tonnes of barley harvested as of 29 July
|
Ukrainian farmers have as of 29 July harvested nearly 27 million tonnes of grain representing a 21% year-on-year increase on 9 million hectares of land, investment bank Dragon Capital said in a report.
The figures imply an average yield of 2.95 tonnes per hectare, or a 22% rise over the same period last year, according to the Ukraine media Kiev Post.
Dragon Capital reported that the volume included 19.6 million tonnes of wheat, 6.2 million tonnes of barley and 2.1 million tonnes of rapeseed. The Agriculture Ministry forecasts that 57-59 million tonnes of grain will be harvested this year, up 22-26% over last year, and the highest volume in a decade, Dragon Capital said.
“We are currently more conservative on the 2013 harvest outlook in view of the very dry weather currently being observed in central and southern Ukraine, expecting production of 55.1 million tonnes (+26% year-on-year). At the same time, we think grain exports in the 2013/14 marketing year could hit 28.6 million tonnes (+19% year-on-year), above the Agriculture Ministry’s forecast, including 17.7 million tonnes of corn (+20%), 8.2 million tonnes of wheat (+20%) and 2.7 million tonnes of barley (+15%),” said experts.

France: Grain exports from Rouen double on barley shipment to Saudi Arabia
|
Grain exports from the French port of Rouen, Europe’s biggest wheat-shipping hub, almost doubled in the week through July, 31 on a barley shipment to Saudi Arabia, Bloomberg reports.
Deliveries jumped 93 percent to 72,734 metric tons of wheat and barley in the July 25-31 period from 37,717 tons in the previous week, the Seine River port wrote in an e-mailed report. Saudi Arabia was the biggest destination with 58,484 tons of feed barley.
Rouen accounted for 45 percent of France’s soft-wheat exports in 2012-13, ahead of La Pallice on the Bay of Biscay and Dunkirk on the North Sea, according to port figures.
