USA: Craft beer cuts the on-trade market share of America’s top 25 beer brands
|
Craft beer has helped cut the on-trade market share of the top 25 US beer brands by four percentage points over the past year, a new survey has revealed.
At the start of last year, the top 25 brands accounted for 57.5% of the US on-trade market, tracking firm Guestmetrics reported on August 13. The most recent quarter saw the share fall to 53%.
Guestmetrics said the drop was “largely reflective” of the rise in craft beer, as well as growth in innovations.
Despite the market share drop, top 25 beer brands Blue Moon, Stella, Dos Equis, Corona Light, Shock Top and Negra Modelo all posted “robust growth” in the past year.
GuestMetrics figures are based on around US$8 bln of annual transactions in US restaurants and bars.
Last week, Guestmetrics said Anheuser-Busch InBev's Budweiser Black Crown gained an 11 percentage-point jump in US on-trade distribution in the first half of this year, second only to the Boston Beer Co's hard cider brand Angry Orchard.

USA, ID: MillerCoors rejects some malting barley for wrong kernel size
|
A number of MillerCoors malting barley loads have been rejected this season for failing to meet adequate kernel size due to challenging weather conditions, Capital Press reported on August, 12.
Derek Godsey, Idaho regional supervisor for MillerCoors, said his company runs barley loads over a screen with holes of 3/32nds of an inch in diameter. A load is rejected if more than 30 percent of the barley falls through.
Thus far this harvest, he said 5-10 percent of Idaho barley has been rejected. Prompted by malt contract prices running about $2 per hundredweight above feed prices, many growers are renting their own screeners to sort rejected loads at home, returning to MillerCoors with the best grain and selling the smaller kernels for feed.
"We experience screening issues every year, but they are more widespread this year due to the climate. ... MillerCoors still has plenty of plump barley to use that is being delivered by its long-term growers," Godsey said.
Godsey said growers won't be held to their malt contracts if they don't meet screening specifications.
Idaho Barley Commissioner Pat Purdy, of Picabo, said heat has led to higher screenings than normal, but he hasn't heard of growers in the

USA, PA: Victory Brewing to add DirtWolfTM Double IPA and Winter CheersTM to its line of packaged beers
|
Victory Brewing Company announced several additions to its line up of packaged beers to be released this fall, including a new year-round offering, DirtWolfTM Double IPA, and holiday seasonal ale, Winter CheersTM. The brewery also will return an old fan favourite to the market, Old Horizontal, after a hiatus in 2012 and 2011, Brew Bound reported on August, 12.
DirtWolf Double IPA is the culmination of Victory’s double IPA series experiment. Replacing Victory’s Hop Wallop Ale, which will take a hiatus from the market for the time being, DirtWolf Double IPA will launch the brewery’s entry into four-packs when it begins to hit markets in October.
Light in body with a soothing texture, Winter Cheers is a stark contrast from the pungent punch of DirtWolf. At 6.7% ABV will be available in 12 oz. bottles (six-packs) and on draft, beginning distribution in October as well.
Barleywine fans also will enjoy the return of Victory’s Old Horizontal, hitting shelves again in November of this year, this time in 22 oz. bottles.

USA, MN: Big Wood Brewery released four premium craft beers in Rexam cans
|
Big Wood Brewery, a bold new player on the craft beer scene gaining notoriety for its distinctive brews, launched four of its award-winning craft beers in cans, Herald reported on August, 12.
The four new beers, Jack Savage, Morning Wood, Bark Bite and Bad Axe are available now in Rexam 16 oz. cans.
“We always knew we wanted to launch our unique craft beers in cans. Cans provide complete protection from light that helps preserve freshness. They also offer us a lot more space to tell our branding story. Through our partnership with Rexam, we have the perfect package for our beers," said Jason Medvec, the president of Big Wood Brewery.
"Big Wood Brewery also benefits from the many additional advantages of cans including portability, durability and the fact that cans are the most sustainable beverage packaging choice in the world, as they are recycled at more than double the rate of any other beverage package,” Rich Grimley, the president and CEO of Rexam BCNA, commented on the can as the ideal choice for craft beers.
Big Wood Brewery beers in cans are currently available at bars, restaurants and retailers across Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota.

USA, MN: August Schell Brewing Company to launch new Fresh Hop series
|
The August Schell Brewing Co., the second-oldest family-owned brewery in USA, brewer of Schell’s and Grain Belt, is set to release a new Fresh Hop series this fall, San Francisco Chronicle reported on August, 9.
Last fall, the August Schell Brewing Company released Fresh Hop Citra Pils as part of its Stag Series. Due to the popularity of this beer and the fun had by the Schell’s crew when making it, they’ve decided to release a fresh hop beer variety annually as a limited seasonal offering.
The Schell's Fresh Hop Pilsner Series beers will be made each year during prime hop harvesting season.
This year’s Fresh Hop beer will be a pilsner that is single hopped with the new and exciting Mosaic hop variety. This hop gives off an abundant mix of flavours and aromas to the beer, hence the name Mosaic.
Schell’s Fresh Hop will be a very limited brew, yielding 100 barrels. The beer will be packaged in 6 packs and 1/6 barrel kegs.

Japan: Beer shipments up 3.3% in July
|
Beer and quasi-beer shipments in July rose 3.3 percent from a year before to 44,374,000 cases, the first rise in two years for the month, data from four major brewers in Japan showed on August 12.
The growth was led by brisk shipments in early July amid heat waves in the Kanto region, where the rainy season ended earlier than usual.
Of the total, beer shipments rose 5.6 percent to 23,925,000 cases, with growth in sales to both restaurants and households.
Shipments of beer as gifts were up 8.3 percent, marking the first rise since 1997 for the month, backed by the popularity of high-end premium beer products.
Meanwhile, shipments of so-called third-segment beerlike beverages, which are cheaper than regular beer as they contain little to no malt, grew 2 percent to 14,763,000 cases, up for the seventh straight month.
Those of happoshu low-malt quasi-beer dropped 2.6 percent to 5,686,000 cases. Each case contains the equivalent of 20 633-milliliter bottles.
Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Suntory Liquors Ltd. logged year-on-year increases in beer and beerlike beverage shipments due to strong gift product sales.
