The impact of pro-oxidative storage conditions on the aroma profile of Hallertauer Mittelfruh hops (poster presentation at the 2013 ASBC Annual meeting)
ABSTRACT
Peacock suggested in 1980 that the oxygenated fraction of hop oil, although relatively small in concentration, is critical to the sought-after noble hop aroma. These US researchers have tested it. By storing Mittelfrueh hops in prooxidative
conditions, the GCMS results show a clear increase in terpenoids and oxygen-containing compounds and a simultaneous decrease in terpenes and hydrocarbon compounds. The sensory quality of these oxidized aroma compounds were described with herbal, spicy, woody, and earthy odors, which are associated with a "noble" hop character. However of course, the HSI value increases and alpha and beta acids are degraded. Brewing trials are planned to determine the impact on hop aroma in beer.

The Netherlands: Heineken’s controlling families to increase share in Heineken Holding
|
The families that control Heineken said on August 26 they planned to buy up to 100 million euros ($134.0 million) of shares in Heineken Holding.
The grouping of the Heineken and Hoyer families, L'Arche Green N.V., holds 51.083 percent of shares in Heineken Holding, which in turn owns 50.005 percent of Heineken, the world's third largest brewer.
L'Arche Green, itself 88.67 percent owned by the Heineken family and 11.33 percent by the Hoyer family, said it had mandated a bank to purchase the shares in the open market between September 9 this year and July 9 in 2014.

Ethiopia: Heineken’s two breweries get a loan from Commercial Bank of Ethiopia

It was just few weeks ago that Raya and Habesha, two new and upcoming breweries, secured loans of more than a billion birr from the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) for the construction of new factories.
Then on August 22, the CBE approved a loan to Heineken that amounts to some 850 million birr, Ethiosports reported.
The Dutch brewer owns both the Bedele and Harar brands, earning USD 163 million last year.
The total loan approved to the four breweries totaled 1.5 billion birr.
Meta Abo Brewery, owned by the London-based Diageo, has also secured a loan from the state-owned commercial bank.
Sources from the CBE confirmed that it has agreed to disburse 304 million birr for Bedele and 281 million birr for the Harar breweries, revealing that Heineken will increase the current production from 300 thousand hectolitres to 450 thousand hectolitres. However, it is to be recalled that Heineken applied for 403 million birr for Harar and 331 million birr for Bedele’s expansion. The Netherlands-based Heineken is waiting for the CBE’s response to loan requests amounting to three billion birr. Brazil: Heineken confirms closure of its Cuiabá brewery
|
Heineken has confirmed the closure of activities at its plant in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, d24am.com reported on August 25.
The beer giant will transfer half of the production to its Araraquara brewery in the state of Sao Paulo and the second half to Manaus.
The brewer said it started the transfer process in May.

Ireland: Craft beer thriving amid recession
|
The craft beer industry in Ireland is thriving in a time of national recession. Over half of the country’s existing 37 breweries and cider makers have been set up since 2009, Irish Examiner reported on August 26.
But they are backed with a tradition of craft brewing that is embedded in the mists of history. In the 19th and early 20th century, the Irish landscape was dotted with breweries.
Different regions produced different styles servicing the local population with ales and stouts.
The appeal continues today with industry sales rising by 42.5% last year and expected to increase by at least a further 35% this year. This rise was experienced in both the domestic (55%) and the international (25%) marketplaces, despite an overall decrease in domestic alcohol and beer sales.
That growth will be celebrated at the Irish Craft Beer and Cider Festival which takes place at the RDS in Dublin during next week (Sep 5-8).
It will fall in line with Irish Craft Beer Week which will run from next Friday (Aug 30) through independent pubs and off-licences nationwide.
Featuring some 25 craft beverage producers, the festival is expected to attract over 8,000 visitors during the weekend.

South Africa: Craft beer business enjoying a massive demand

The Western Cape might be South Africa's wine capital - renowned around the world as the home of some of the country's most famous labels - but not far from Stellenbosch's fertile vineyards there's another drink brewing up a storm, Marketplace Africa reported on August 23.
Inspired by an international boom for local, independent microbreweries, the business of craft beer has also taken off in South Africa recently, as growing numbers of small producers are experimenting with styles and techniques to satisfy a rising thirst for new flavors and novel brews.
"There is a massive demand," says Dan Badenhorst, co-founder of Devil's Peak Brewing Company, just one of the several microbreweries to come out of Cape Town in recent times.
"We started off in a garage, from there we bought our own 500-liter system and now we are in this new 1,500-liter system," he adds. "Constantly, our biggest challenge has been keeping up with the demand."
Craft beer is traditionally produced by independent breweries on a much smaller scale than the multinationals.

South Korea: Beer exports about four times larger than imports in H1 2013
|
Exports by South Korean brewers are about four times larger than imports from foreign brewers in the first half of the year, data showed on August 26.
According to the data by the local drink industry and Korea Customs Service, two South Korean beer makers - Oriental Brewery Co. (OB) and Hite Jiro Co. - exported beer worth a combined 180 billion won (US$161 million) in the January-June period.

New Zealand: Moa Brewing appears to be lost in the beer market
|
Moa Brewing appeared to be lost in the beer market, fund manager Brian Gaynor said as he interrogated its board at the listed beer company's annual meeting last week on why sales volumes are expected to be 30 per cent behind targets for this year, The New Zealand Herald reported.
The company, which listed on the NZX in November, estimates sales volumes for the 12 months to March 31 next year will be lower than the target of 195,000 cases published in its initial public offer prospectus.
Moa said last week the reduction was largely a result of a sales shortfall in this country, its biggest market by far, accounting for 70 per cent of the brewer's $4.4 million revenue in the 2013 financial year.
The company blames its New Zealand distributor. Moa said on August, 20 it was changing its distribution model and bringing its sales force back in house.
Chief executive Geoff Ross said the half-year result would bear the brunt of the distribution changeover and that there would be a lull before the company could regain momentum when this new distribution model is implemented from October 1.

Paolo Lanzarotti assumed a position of general manger of Plzensky Prazdroj on August 1, 2013, 4-traders reported on August 26.
During his career at SABMiller so far, Paolo Lanzarotti has managed companies in several beer markets in several countries including Italy, Slovakia and not too long ago India.
He has been active in the beer brewing industry for 9 years. He came to SABMiller in 2005 and held several commercial posts in Italy. After that, he assumed the post of general manager in Slovakia and then in India. He led Brewery Topwar in Slovakia for one and half years. From there he travelled to India where he managed the revitalization of the Indian SABMiller company, which included 14 production plants.

Japan & Malaysia: Kirin Ichiban beer launched in Malaysia
|
The iconic Japanese beer, Kirin Ichiban, has finally arrived in Malaysia, and was launched at an exclusive dinner and party at Daikanyama, Changkat Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, The Star Online reported on August 26.
Kirin is one of the most popular beers in Japan, with a history that dates back to 1888, when it was first brewed under the name Japan Brewery (which changed its name to Kirin Brewery in 1907).
Introduced in 1990, Kirin Ichiban is made exclusively from the first press of the wort, giving it a smooth, creamy yet crisp flavour. Kirin beer is distributed by Tong Woh Enterprise, and is available at selected outlets in Malaysia, including Daikanyama.
