0 Japan: Japanese brewers concerned about ethanol, biotech impact

Japan beer brewers are concerned about the impact of the ethanol industry and U.S. corn supply on their industry, according to Illinois Farm Bureau, September 14.

Cary Sifferath, U.S. Grains Council senior director in Japan, recently met with the Brewers Association of Japan to discuss the impact of U.S. ethanol production on corn supply and the availability of non-biotech corn.

“Japan’s beer industry is a major end-user of corn products, such as corn starch and corn sweeteners produced by the Japanese corn starch industry from imported U.S. corn,” said Sifferath.

He noted the Japanese beer industry demands starch and sweeteners made from non-biotech corn.

“With 73 percent of planted acres in the United States being biotech, the Japanese beer industry is concerned about current and future supplies of non-GM corn from the United States,” he said.

In addition to discussing the overall U.S. corn supply and demand outlook, he shared an overview of the U.S. fuel ethanol industry and outlook for U.S. non-biotech corn production.

The brewers realize the U.S. will continue to be a major corn producer, but remain worried about prices for U.S. corn and future costs of non-biotech corn, according to Sifferath.

Japan, the largest U.S. corn customer, has imported 1.6 million metric tons, ...

0 UK: Beer market in decline

The beer market is in decline in the UK as Britons turn their back on what is, these days, often seen as an unhealthy and downmarket drink, Scotsman reported September 3. The trend has not been helped by a host of factors this year, as the recent round of brewing figures has revealed.

Not least, there is the dreadful summer weather that has dampened customers' thirst for beer.

Foster's and Kronenbourg brewer Scottish & Newcastle has also warned it may not meet full-year targets as demand waned amid the lashing rain seen in June and July. But the group noted that the smoking ban introduced across the UK since last March was adding to the weather-related trading problems, predicting the legislation could knock the entire UK beer market by up to 2 per cent.

Many brewers were hoping the ban - which came into effect in Scotland in March 2006 followed by Wales, Northern Ireland and finally England on 1 July - would be felt less in the summer, with drinking outside pubs expected to hold up in the sunny weather. The rain, however, emptied pub gardens.

Then there are the tough comparatives for beer firms to beat, driven by ...

Barley News

0 Australia: USDA forecasts 1 mil tonnes cut in Australian barley production

The USDA forecasts a cut in Australian barley production of one million tonnes because of the dry weather, according to Australasian Investment Review, September 13. Much of barley is grown in South Australia where dry weather hit 10 days ago and has continued off and on. Parts of Western Australia have also been very dry in the past month, hence the reductions in estimates.

Australia barley production is cut 1.0 million tons reflecting dry conditions that are expected to have an even greater impact on barley than wheat because of its earlier maturity.

2 China: Demand for malting barley in 2008 will be 4.5 million tonnes

China’s barley imports lag miles behind normal figures and will probably not even reach 1 million tonnes this year, analysts commented on September 2. ...

Determination of Ochratoxin A in Beer

LUBOMÍR DAŠKO, ELENA BELAJOVÁ, DRAHOMÍRA RAUOVÁ and MILAN KOVÁČ
Food Research Institute, Bratislava, Slovak Republic

DESCRIPTION: DAŠKO L., BELAJOVÁ E., RAUOVÁ D., KOVÁČ M. (2005): Determination of ochratoxin A in beer. Czech J. Food Sci., 23: 69–73.

Ochratoxin A is a very common mycotoxin which can be found rather often, predominantly in various cereal materials and in products from this type of plants. Our aim was to apply an analytical procedure with a suitable detection level of ochratoxin A for its estimation in beer. The detection level of the method suggested was close to 0.001 µg/kg. The analytical procedure is based on HPLC separation with fluorescence detection. The application of this method is demonstrated and analytical results obtained with beer of domestic provenience are reported.
