Genetically Modified Barley and the Brewing Industry
By Gary J. Muehlbauer 1 and D. A. Somers 2
1 Assistant Professor
2 Professor, Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics,
University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN, USA.
ABSTRACT
All crops used in the production of beer, with the exception of
hops, can be genetically modified (GM). While barley is being genetically
modified for research purposes and will likely be commercialized
in the near future, other GM crops such as corn and rice are in
commercial production. This review addresses the impact of GM
barley and other GM crops on the brewing industry. Specific topics
include: (i) the history and status of plant genetic engineering technologies
with emphasis on barley and other cereals, (ii) GM crops and
traits currently in production and those that are being developed for
future commercialization, (iii) concerns, risks, and benefits of GM
crops including barley and crops used as brewing ingredients, and
(iv) methods for detection of GM ingredients.
