Brewery News

0 Czech Republic: Anheuser-Busch the most likely bidder for Budejovicky Budvar

Anheuser-Busch is the most likely buyer for state-owned Czech brewer, Budejovicky Budvar, if the latter is privatised, according to two sector bankers, The Financial Times reported September 6.

Heineken of the Netherlands is also likely to make an offer for Budejovicky Budvar, both bankers said, but would probably not accept the same high multiples as A-B would on a deal.

Assuming the company has approximately EUR 120m in revenues and a net income of 8-10%, the first banker estimated Budvar’s price would be in the area of EUR 400m. The second banker estimated that the brewer would sell for 10-15 times EBITDA.

Trademark issues surrounding the Budweiser name, the first banker said, constitute grounds for A-B to pay a premium for the České Budějovice-based company. A-B, he said, would resolve the issue and save the company some USD 25m in legal costs per year: “more than the net income of [Budejovicky Budvar].”

Budvar could be an attractive target for Heineken too, the first banker said, as the Dutch brewer seeks to expand its presence in Eastern Europe. “For them, it would move the needle, they are small in the Czech Republic [and such a purchase] would get them closer to ...

0 UK: Carlsberg ready to buy S&N’s stake in BBH; S&N says it’s not for sale

Carlsberg AS is ready to buy Scottish & Newcastle out of their Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH) joint venture for 30-40 bln dkr, daily Berlingske Tidende said, citing Carlsberg chairman Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen, according to AFX News Limited, September 7.

'We are ready,' Krogsgaard-Larsen said. 'We can clearly see advantages in getting 100 pct ownership of BBH. We've built up a capital reserve so we can react the day it becomes possible [to buy S&N's share of BBH].'

'Naturally there is competition between Scottish & Newcastle and Carlsberg about marketing our own brands as effectively as possible,' Krogsgaard-Larsen said. 'If we have 100 pct of BBH we can decide for ourselves how we will market our products alongside Baltika's products.'

Sources told Thomson Financial News they could not 'conceive of the possibility' of the stake in the joint venture with Carlsberg becoming available.

A spokesman for S&N responded: 'We are very happy with the relationship with Carlsberg and the joint ownership of BBH and that is and will remain the position.'

Speculation of a merger or a takeover of S&N by Carlsberg resurfaced again this week after Carlsberg announced the appointment of Joergen Buhl Rasmussen as chief executive following the departure of Nils Smedegaard Andersen who steps ...

0 USA: Anheuser-Busch executives optimistic about growth outlook

Management continues to expect accelerated sales and earnings growth in the second half of the year and earnings per share growth for the full year to exceed its 7 to 10 percent long-term objective, Anheuser-Busch executives told investors in a presentation given at the Lehman Brothers Consumer Conference, according to company’s press release, September 6.

“We are adapting our portfolio and entire system to meet the demands of a changing marketplace and we are making good progress at strengthening our company’s foundation for sustainable long-term growth,” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of the company.

U.S. beer industry volume in 2006 and year-to-date has grown at a healthy pace. Over this period, import and craft beers in particular have enjoyed strong growth and Anheuser-Busch has added considerably to its portfolio and presence in these growing segments through alliances, acquisitions and new product development. The company has also been leveraging its superior distribution system to pursue high-margin growth opportunities in non-alcohol beverages, such as energy drinks and super-premium waters.

While Anheuser-Busch’s U.S. beer sales-to-retailers were below expectations in the first half of the year, volume trends have shown improvement in the second half. So far in this quarter, ...
