| E-Malt.com News article: Ukraine: Intensely cold weather can negatively influence winter barley sowings
According to the Head of Agrometeorology Department of Ukraine Tatyana Adamenko, low air temperatures, recently set practically on the whole territory of Ukraine, can negatively influence winter crops sowing, especially winter barley and rapeseeds, AgriMarket.Info communicated January 3.
T. Adamenko also noted that the lowing of temperature should not affect winter wheat sowing, only winter barley and winter rapeseeds. At that, the specialist stated that more exact forecasts in relation to influence of low temperatures on the condition of winter crops sowings would be possible depending on duration of cold weather on the territory of Ukraine.
According to the weather forecasts, after the heavy frosts (sometimes to -25C) since January 5 the increase of temperature would be expected starting with western areas and accompanied by snowfalls. This must render favorable influence on the condition of sowings in the southern regions of Ukraine (Khersonskaya, Nikolaevskaya, separate districts of Zaporozhakaya oblasts and the steppe part of Crimea), where the absence of snow covers contributes to considerable dryness of overhead layer of soil.
