In October this year Ukraine exported 196,000 tonnes of barley, which is 52% less than the month before. This is also 42 percent less than the export in October 2002. The average contract price for the barley, sold in October, was $140 per tonne, against $133 per tonne in September.

The largest part of the export in October went to Saudi Arabia - 135,000 tonnes, or 69 %, however, European direction in the export acquired a larger share.

Import of barley in October was 4,800 tonnes, which is 17 times more than in September and 179 times more than the import in October 2002. Nearly all the barley was bought for production of malt. The largest suppliers were UK (2,700 tonnes) and Russia (1,000 tonnes).

According to customs statistics, export of barley in July-October 2003 made 714,000 tonnes. As we already informed, according to the latest USDA report, export of barley from Ukraine in the 2003/04 MY is forecast at the level of 800,000 tonnes, which is by 300,000 tonnes more than USDA forecasted in November. According to APK-Inform estimate, export of barley in the 2003/04 season may reach 1 million tonnes.
