A subsidiary of Sam Adams brewer Boston Beer Co. has acquired Los Angeles-based craft beer maker Angel City Brewing for an undisclosed sum, Boston Herald reported on January, 5.

Alchemy & Science - launched in October by Alan Newman, founder of Vermont’s Magic Hat Brewing Co. - will help fuel Angel City’s brewery expansion in downtown L.A.

The deal marks the first brewery for the portfolio of Alchemy & Science, a “craft beer collaboration” funded by Jim Koch’s Boston Beer Co.

Angel City, owned by award-winning homebrewer Michael Bowe, is known for its pale ale, pilsner and lager beers. The microbrewer has been in business since 1997.

According to a Boston Beer Co. regulatory filing, Bowe will remain with Angel City for two years as an adviser.

Alchemy & Science, based in Burlington, Vt., says its mission is to “increase awareness of craft brewed beers around the country.”
