Much like the winds barreling down the Yellowstone Plateau through the Paradise Valley, Montana’s craft beer industry has only gathered momentum as its members have now grown to 47 with a brewery slated to open in Livingston next summer by Brice and LaNette Jones, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported on November 26.

They’re set to take over the lease on February 1 and have the brewery ready for production by May 2014. The opening will be the culmination of two years of research and work by the two.

Brice Jones has homebrewed off and on over the years, and finally he decided to start a brewery. After settling on a location, the name fell into place. The brewery is named for the katabatic winds that occasionally blow so strongly through the Paradise Valley that it forces Interstate 90 to close. Katabatic winds are downslope winds created when air cools and becomes denser. Gravity then takes over as the heavier air rushes downhill, in this case through the Paradise Valley.

The brewery is planned for a 10-barrel brewing system that will feature about five regular beers and four rotating brews. They’re also offering 100 mugs and 50 steins at $250 and $900, respectively that come with discounts for pints and other brewery gear.

Jones likens them to season passes at ski hills, because consistent patrons ordering three pints a week can account for the cost of a stein in three and a half years, or nine months for a mug. “It’s a promotional item meant for a steady beer drinker,” Jones explained.
