A new craft brewery is coming to Regina this fall and it’s rebelling against traditional breweries in the town, Metronews reported on April 25.

Located at Dewdney Ave. and Rose St, Rebellion Brewing Co. promises to be Regina’s first taproom, according to local man and co-owner Mark Heise.

“We’re not necessarily creating anything new, but it is a little bit different and hasn’t been done in Regina,” said Heise, an internationally renowned home brewer and beer judge.

Unlike traditional bars and pubs, a taproom doesn’t offer a full-service bar but sells non-alcoholic beverages and a limited food menu on top of their own brewed beer and some featured ones. They’re common in the United States and in some Canadian cities like Vancouver.

“The real focus is showcasing our beer … and also on Regina and the local community,” Heise said.

Rebellion Brewing’s beer will be made vegan as they plan to use an organic compound to substitute common clarifiers made of fish bladder. They will also offer gluten-free mead year-round and some other gluten-free beers.

Besides having it on tap, take-home beers won’t be canned and will be served in growlers, which are two litre jugs that could be filled up once patrons come back to the taproom.

The ingredients used in making Rebellion Brewing’s beer and food will be mostly locally sourced.

“Most of the barley and malt will be grown in Saskatchewan, the fruits from Lumsden Valley, the honey and even local coffee,” Heise said.

The brewery will also partner with local food trucks that would park beside the taproom during special events and days with nice weather.

“Our goal is to embed ourselves in the community and partnering up with local folks so that everyone can enjoy the best that Regina has to offer,” Heise said.

Heise and three of his other co-owners are aiming to have their beer on tap in pubs around the city by August and plan to open the taproom by October.

“It’s really a labour of love,” Heise said. “Soon enough we hope that we can expand around in the prairies. We can’t wait.”
