The start was later than originally planned, but Tecumseh Brewing Co. is officially open for business, as reported by Lenconnect.com on May 2.

“It was a long journey, but we finally made it and we are excited,” said co-owner Kyle DeWitt.

The brewpub at 128 W. Chicago Blvd., Tecumseh is open 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and noon to midnight on Sunday. The business works in a pub style.

DeWitt said the first week has been a growing and learning process.

“All of the non-corporate craft brewers in Michigan tend to go to this style,” DeWitt said. “This gives you more freedom. You can get your food and your beer quicker this way. We like our system. It’s just a matter of getting efficient enough and that comes with time.”

DeWitt and Schmidt have been working more than three years on the project. In April 2014, they hosted a pair of tasting events that introduced some of their brewpub’s offerings.

“When we had our pre-tasting trial run with all the food, we were, like ‘Yeah, this is going to be good,’” DeWitt said. “The support has been there and people are really excited about it.”

Both he and Schmidt have had more than a decade in the business and have not lost the passion for brewing. Schmidt took a quick break from his brewing duties to talk about the endeavour. He was especially enthusiastic about the beer he was brewing.
