“All the years I worked in consulting, I was creating Power Points and spreadsheets. I got very good at it, but it’s not as gratifying as creating a product, putting it in someone’s hands and saying ‘Drink this,’” Adam Romanow said. “The hours are longer, the work is harder and the pay is not as good as some of the jobs I’ve had before, so I got to love what I’m doing,” Wicked Local Norwood reported on August 10.

Romanow is the founder and president of Castle Island Brewing Company, which is undergoing construction at 31 Astor Ave., Norwood. The name is borrowed from Castle Island, the home of “Fort Independence” and popular recreation site in South Boston.

“I live a block away from Castle Island. Living a block away, it felt like a great name, because there is that personal connection,” Romanow said. “For me, Castle Island is about relaxing, before or after a hard day’s work.“

“Castle Island Brewing Company is Norwood’s first brewery,” Romanow said.

He aims to open a 30-barrel brew house, allowing him to brew approximately 5,580 gallons of beer per day. Romanow won’t be alone in his efforts: joining him is head brewer Matt DeLuca.

“We had the same vision. We both have similar viewpoints in where the industry is going and the knowledge about what works and what doesn’t,” DeLuca said.

They aim to open Castle Island Brewing Company in October. They will launch with two signature beers, both based on Romanow’s recipes. The first is a hoppy session ale, with a low alcohol by volume called The Candlepin.

“I wanted to have a beer where I could drink a few of them and not have a ton of alcohol in my system and not be overwhelmed,” Romanow said.

They will also feature an unnamed IPA (India pale ale).

“You definitely need to have an IPA in this market and this day and age,” DeLuca said, noting that many brewing companies are judged on the quality of their IPA’s.
