Downtown Austin is getting a new brewery with Central District Brewing. It'll be found within the Austin Convention Center garage on 5th and Red River streets. The plans for the brewery, from owners Julie Ballato and Angela Duley, were approved last week by Austin City Council. It’s aiming to open by the end of 2018, Eater Austin reported on August 7.
“We want to create a community spot for locals and a space where travelers feel welcomed,” said Ballato of Central District Brewing. She and Duley dreamt of opening their own brewery since 2013, when they opened their company East Holly, LLC.
All Central District Brewing beers will be brewed on the property, with annual and seasonal European- and American-style beers. For those looking for non-alcoholic drinks, there will be root beer and tapped sparkling juices. The brewery will also offer tastings and classes on beer production and Austin’s brewing history.
Duley’s husband Adam will oversee the brewing operations. He brewed beers in Texas and France, as well as apprenticed at California’s The Lost Abbey and Port Brewing.
The downtown location is a prime spot for the brewery, with proximity to the convention center, the Rainey, Red River, and Dirty Sixth crowds, and it’s within walking distance of the Capitol. It looks like the last time the area had a proper brewery was with the Bitter End Bistro and Brewery, which seemed to have closed sometime in the mid-2000s.
Right next door to Central District will be downtown's newest wine tasting room Texas Reds and Whites, which is aiming to open in September.
