The excitement is building for the opening of a new brewery in Scituate.

Untold Brewing is on tap to open Friday, Oct. 13 and craft beer aficionados are waiting in eager anticipation, the Wicked Local Scituate reported.

“The feedback has been so positive,” said Kristin Greene, co-found/director of marketing for the brewery. “People have been stopping by to see if we’re open yet.”

Greene, her brother, brewer/co-founder Matt Elder, and head brewer/co-founder Kyle Hansen are the driving force behind Untold Brewery and have been working hard to set up shop in the community.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a while,” Elder said. “This is something I really enjoy.”

Elder came up with the vision for Untold back in 2014, when he quit his desk job to become a brewer at Georgetown Brewing in Seattle, Greene said.

“He wanted to return to Scituate to start the brewery because it’s his hometown and where his roots reside,” she said. “With both of us being born and raised in Scituate, the fact that we’ve been able to build and establish our community here has an incredibly special meaning.”

Elder and Hansen crossed paths when both were working at Georgetown Brewing Company.

“They trained us well,” Elder said of his former employer. “We learned a lot while we were there.”

Both Elder and Hansen were home brewers with a passion for beer, something Greene also shares.

A self-described “closet nerd,” Hansen has put his interest of science to good use with the company.

“There’s a lot of science in brewing,” he said. “You start with light beers and then try something new. Then your world explodes.”

Hansen was looking to move to the northeast and when he and Elder started talking about the idea for Untold, Green said.

“Kyle was excited about being a partner in something from day one and was on board.” Originally from Colorado, Hansen is finding New England unlike anywhere else he’s lived in the country and he’s really enjoying the area, Greene said.

The brewery name comes from a Maya Angelou quote from her book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

“When Matt was trying to come up with a name for the brewery he happened upon the Angelou quote and it resonated with him - prior to becoming a brewer he had worked a corporate job, and always felt like pursuing a career in brewing was his ‘untold story,’” Greene said. “When Kyle and I joined as partners in the brewery it felt like our collective untold stories were being told through building the brewery together. The three of us all had very different paths that led us to craft beer, and a desire to turn our love for craft into something we could share with others is what brought Untold to life.”

Located at 6 Old Country Way, the taproom is a renovated 1852 schoolhouse. The brew house is at the back, visible to visitors who approach the bar.

“It’s a great location,” Elder said, noting it’s right off the Route 3A rotary, and just steps from the Grreenbush MBTA station.

The taproom, a restored nod to Scituate history, has a German beer hall feel to it. The space is open and airy with plenty of room to move and mingle. There are long wooden tables and benches, and even an adjacent outside patio area.

“We want to create a community here,” Hansen said.

Elder agrees.

“We want this to be a place where people can come with their friends and family to enjoy some great craft beer and some conversation,” he said.

Though food will not be prepared on site, there will be a variety of food offerings at the brewery.

“We will offer free snacks, allow customers to bring in delivery/takeout, and have a different food trucks and pop-ups on site,” Green said.

The lure of the craft beer brewery

Breweries have been steadily growing in popularity.

Elder, Greene and Hansen all feel breweries have become the new coffeehouses.

Beer lovers are akin to wine lovers, Greene said.

“There are so many huge craft beers, people have a passion for it, like they do for different wines,” she said.

According to Elder, there are more than 5,000 breweries in the U.S.

“They’re a place to go and hang out and meet people,” Elder said. “And I think people like that it’s local.”

“It’s putting a face to the beer,” Hansen added.

Liz Carr and Andrew King are two more faces that will be seen at Untold Brewing, in addition to Elder, Hansen and Greene.

Originally from Hingham, Carr is the taproom manager. She was in management at The Corner Stop Eatery in Cohasset before joining Untold Brewing.

“I was in charge of the craft beer there,” she said. “I loved the restaurant but the beer was calling me here.”

Quincy resident Andrew King is a full-time taproom staff member. King worked as a science teacher in Stoughton. He is also passionate about beer and has been home brewing for several years.

“It made sense as a science teacher to get into brewing,” he said. “I left teaching to step into a new career. I’m really excited.”

Carr said she is looking forward to introducing beer lovers to the new brewery.

“What they’re doing with craft beer now is amazing,” she said.

Untold Brewing plans to offer several year-round beers along with some seasonal beers, and beers brewed “just for fun,” Elder said.

“We don’t want to pigeon hole ourselves,” Hansen added. “We all like different styles so we’ll offer different styles.”

The company will work with local restaurants to provide quality locally-brewed beers. Various special events will also be held at the brewery as a way to bring people together.

“We are so excited,” Hansen said. “We just hope people are a fraction of excited about it as we are.”
