| E-Malt.com News article: Canada & USA: Barley harvest completed with decent results in the US and weather damaged quality in Canada
Barley harvesting has finished in the U.S., and is coming to an end just now in the Canadian Prairies, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.
Weather finally cleared up to allow combining in Canada, but the damages done by incessant rain and snow storms, incl. frost temperatures, are bad. Discoloured grains, pre-germination, sprouting and even total losses are the result.
The Canadian malt industries need 1 mln tonnes, exporters have sold 5-600 thousand tonnes to China; selection of malting barley will be a major task for the industries and trade.
The U.S. reports a decent crop after all. A few hundred thousand tonnes of barley were downgraded in North Dakota; and in the end Montana and Idaho lost about 10% of their crops to winter weather.
