E-Malt.com News article: USA, TX: Man Overboard Brewing to open December 4 in San Antonio
Brewery news

Beer buffs wading through the Pearl area's sea of brewery options will soon find Man Overboard Brewing. The family-owned brewery and tap room is opening Saturday, December 4 in what was formerly the home of Bexar Stage, an improv comedy theatre, MySanAntonio reported on November 6.

Man Overboard Brewing is owned by the Merrimans, a military family that has roots in San Antonio. Justin Merriman is one of the owners and brewers alongside his father Ron Merriman, mom Cindy Merriman and wife Irene Merriman. Beer fans can get their first taste of the brewery on Black Friday during a soft opening phase. While the November opening isn't the official launch, Justin Merriman says customers will be able to experience the full menu which includes a honey blonde ale, a tangerine wheat beer, a German dunkel, a Belgian golden ale, an IPA and a seltzer.

Justin Merriman says he and his father had been considering taking their brews public for a while. Everything came together when they found the 1203 Camden location earlier this year. Bexar Stage, the improv comedy company, moved out of the 4,400-square-foot space in October 2020 promising to return at another location "when this virus' threat is behind us."

"Between my father and I, we've got almost 20 years of experience brewing for ourselves and for our family and friends," Justin Merriman says. "But this is our first open-to-the public type brewery."

The owner says the family is "very" happy with the proximity to the Pearl (a 2-minute drive) and downtown San Antonio. He's excited to offer a relaxed atmosphere in the taproom, which can seat about 100 people.

"Our plan is to have great beer and have food trucks whenever possible, that's what people should expect," he adds. "Just great beer is what we're really focused on."

Justin Merriman says customers are getting the quality of beer he serves for his family and friends. Each member of the ownership has a go-to beer on the menu. His is the tangerine wheat.

"We've brewed that one so many times because it's my favorite. We had it at my wedding," he says with a laugh.

He describes it as classic wheat beer with an aroma of tangerine with a little bitterness on the end.

"We spent years finding out what everybody in our family likes and spent years making those recipes better and better," Justin Merriman says.
