E-Malt.com News article: USA: Molson Coors to bring back Keystone Ice beer
Brewery news

Molson Coors plans to bring back Keystone Ice as part of a broad value-beer strategy this year, MSN reported on May 4.

The beer company signaled during its earnings conference call that it will reintroduce Keystone Ice after having previously cut the brand during a portfolio rationalization that was focused on “premiumizing” the product lineup. The relaunch of Keystone Ice is seen as timely amid renewed demand for low-priced, higher-ABV beers, with many consumers trading down while still seeking recognizable legacy labels.

The broader Keystone family traces back to 1989, when Coors introduced Keystone and Keystone Light as budget offerings aimed at price-conscious drinkers, using a separate brand identity from flagship Coors to avoid diluting the core franchise. Keystone, produced in Golden, Colorado, was initially rolled out in markets like Chico, California, before gaining wider U.S. distribution. The line became known for low price points and playful "bitter beer face" advertising. Keystone Ice arrived in the mid‑1990s amid the broader “ice beer” wave, in which major U.S. brewers introduced ice‑brewed extensions to appeal to young adults seeking more alcohol per dollar. Keystone Ice typically came in cans and kegs, and registered around 5.9% ABV.

Molson Coors announced in 2021 that it would permanently discontinue Keystone Ice along with 10 other economy‑tier brands as part of a strategy to streamline SKUs and focus on higher‑margin products. The portfolio premiumization move also impacted value brands like Milwaukee’s Best Premium and Steel Reserve variants to free resources for newer beyond‑beer offerings.

On the earnings call, Molson Coors management said the decision to reintroduce Keystone Ice was extremely well received by the distribution network.
