E-Malt.com News article: Poland: First results of Poland’s winter barley harvest diappoint
Barley news

The first results of Poland’s winter barley harvest indicate lower-than-expected yields and weak farmgate prices. On many farms, yields are below last year’s levels, averaging 4.5–5.0 t/ha, while some drought-affected fields are producing only around 3 t/ha. At the same time, feed barley prices are ranging from PLN 580–640/t (US$155–170/t), which producers say is insufficient to cover rising production costs, UkrAgroConsult reported on July 7.

Grain quality has become another challenge. Early deliveries are showing low test weights and significant quality variability, prompting grain elevators to apply larger discounts for barley that fails to meet quality standards. This is putting additional pressure on growers’ profitability.

Despite disappointing early harvest results, analysts do not expect a shortage of feed barley. Harvesting is still in its early stages, and higher-yielding fields remain unharvested in several regions. Meanwhile, cheaper barley is becoming more competitive than wheat and corn in feed rations, supporting demand from the livestock sector.

On the export market, Poland remains largely influenced by pricing in neighboring countries. Supplies of Ukrainian and German barley remain sufficient, limiting the ability of Polish exporters to raise prices. As a result, some farmers are choosing to delay sales in the hope of stronger market conditions later in the season.

Analysts believe that final yields, grain quality, and farmers’ selling activity will be the key factors shaping the Polish barley market in the coming weeks. If later-harvested fields fail to deliver better results, poor profitability could influence barley planting decisions for the 2027 crop.
