E-Malt.com News article: Cayman Islands: Stingray Brewery getting overhaul will reopen by the end of the year under the new name

The former Stingray Brewery in Prospect is undergoing a multi–million dollar overhaul and will reopen by the end of the year under the new company name The Cayman Islands Brewery Ltd., the Cayman media posted on September 17.

The new brewery will be about 12,000 square feet and is on a three–acre site on Shamrock Road, states a press release. Construction of the new brewery and bottling hall began earlier this year.

Construction is being undertaken by Hadsphaltic International and project management of the building works is being undertaken by BCQS, both local Caymanian companies.

Desmond Campbell, finance director of the brewery, said that the new investment team of the Cayman Islands Brewery had taken ownership of the brewery with a view to developing and launching a new, top quality beer in the Cayman Islands.

“We are delighted to see a new, state–of–the–art brewery being built here in Prospect, Grand Cayman – historically the home of Caymanian beer,” he said.

Co–director, Stephen Webster, said the project had been in development since early 2004.

“The objective is to create a brewery based upon the principles of excellence in technique and technology. We will be capable of producing beers to the highest international standards of which the Cayman Islands can be proud,” he said.

Bank financing for the project is being provided by First Caribbean Bank in Cayman.

The board of the new company is particularly strong and comprises overseas investors; Robert Dory, Stephen Webster and John Otway, all of whom have a considerable track record in the beverage and brewing industries. They are joined on the board by local businessmen, A. L. Thompson, Desmond Campbell and Clifton Connolly.

The company has employed the services of Brewtech GmbH, a German consultancy firm that specialises in the design and construction of breweries and the overhaul and modernisation of existing plants. Project Manager Oliver Wesseloh has been seconded by Brewtech to The Cayman Islands Brewery and is managing the technical process to extend and modernize the existing brewery.

Since 1992, Brewtech has gained global recognition by bringing its European expertise to large brewing projects worldwide, especially in the Caribbean. Brewtech played a large part in developing the Caribbean beers, Balashi in Aruba, Wadadli in Antigua and Kubuli in Dominica.
