  • 2. Brewery News

SABMiller Plc, the world's second-largest brewer, plans to sell its “Miller Genuine Draft” beer brand in Central and Eastern Europe, The Wall Street Journal reported on June 13. The brewer plans to introduce the brand in Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland and Italy, said the company. "We want to emphasize the youthful exuberance of the Miller brand and its sense of freedom," Alan Clark, managing director of SABMiller's European operations, told the newspaper. Miller Genuine Draft, a popular beer in the United States, is already available in Germany, Russia and United Kingdom, The Journal stated. SABMiller, formerly South African Breweries, bought Miller Brewing Co. last year from Philip Morris Cos., now Altria Group Inc., for $5.6 billion. The deal doubled its global market share and gave it a foothold in the lucrative U.S. market. But despite snazzy new packaging and a sex-fueled television advertisement featuring Pamela Anderson, the beer brand's sales have fallen nearly 5% in the U.S., where it continues to trail products from rivals Anheuser-Busch and Adolph Coors Co.

San Miguel Corp, Southeast Asia's biggest food and beverage firm, announced on June 11 its beer sales rose 12% in its Philippine home market in April, according to Reuters. San Miguel, 15 % owned by Japan's Kirin Brewery Co Ltd, said that domestic beer sales grew about 10 % in January to April from a year earlier. Beer comprises about a fifth of its consolidated sales. "We confirm that San Miguel's domestic beer volumes for April and the first four months increased by 12 % and 10 %, respectively," it said in a statement to the stock exchange. San Miguel dominates the Philippine beer market with a share of about 90%. San Miguel posted 10 % volume growth in local beer sales in the first quarter, fuelling a 12 % climb in revenue and a 21 % jump in net income in the period. "If the trend continues for the rest of the year then beer volume sales should easily reach 147 million cases for 2003," CLSA Securities said. "This would be a major improvement from the 134.3 million cases sold last year and the first time in recent years that the company would have posted two years of continued growth."...more info

The Dutch brewing force, Heineken NV, announced on June 11 that, GeBAG shareholders representing 80% of the shares, have accepted the offer of Heineken and will transfer their shares to Heineken. Heineken is confident it will acquire the remaining shares in the next two years. GeBAG (Getränke-Beteiligungs-AG) holds 68.7 % of the shares of BBAG (Österreichische Brau-Beteiligungs-Aktiengesellschaft). The offering completes successfully the first step in the acquisition of BBAG by Heineken. Closing of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals. In Central Europe BBAG has breweries in five countries: Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. After completion of the transaction, Heineken and BBAG will combine all their operations in Central Europe in the newly formed company Brau Union AG. This company will be responsible for all operations in 13 Central European countries, namely: Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Serbia-Montenegro, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia and Albania...more info

    3. Malt News

The Agency of intervention of Slovak Republic allocated subsidies for 65,000 tons of exported malt before the end of 2003. A budget of 78 million Sk (EUR 1,87 million) is envisaged for this purpose. The Czech and EU destinations are not eligible. In addition, malt industry will be able to export 4,500 tons to Hungary with a tax of 3%, and 18,000 tons to the EU duty-free.

    4. Barley News

At the trades of Ukrainian commodity exchanges since June 5 till June 11 average weighted price for 3rd class barley (spot, EXW) fell 7.7 % against the previous week on report (May 29 to June 4) - to 530 hryvnias per tonne, National Association of Ukrainian Exchanges (NABU) has informed. The 2nd class malting barley cost 700 hryvnias per tonne. NABU incorporates 35 agricultural exchanges, of which 27 have the right to register export contracts.

According to the data of Ukraine's State Statistics Committee, as of early June 2003 spring crops in Ukraine have been sown on 18.771 million hectares, including some 3.614 million hectares of re-seeded winter crops.
