SUN Interbrew Ukraine increased beer output in January-May 2003 by 29.4% versus the same period last year. Brewing enterprises of SUN Interbrew produced about 196.84 million litres of beer in the first five months of the year. In May 2003 the company output around 55.7 million litres of beer, 28.7% more than in May 2002. SUN Interbrew was crated in 1999 by the second largest brewer Interbrew and Sun Brewing (part of Sun Group) in order to activate on Ukrainian and Russian markets. OOO Sun Interbrew Ukraine owns three brewing plants in Ukraine: “Rogan”, Kharkov; “Desna”, Chernigov and “Yantar”, Nikolaev. In 2002 Sun Interbrew’s breweries increased beer output by 19.7% in comparison with 2001 up to 444.86 million litres. The company held 30.9% of market share in 2002. The main brands brewed by Sun Interbrew Ukraine are: Stella Artois, Chernigivske, Rogan, Taller and Yantar.

The Danish beer brand Carlsberg and the Russian Baltika hold a stable position on the Latvian beer market, said Mikelis Cerpins, a spokesman of Aldaris, the largest brewer of Latvia. Aldaris sold 273 thousand litres of famous Danish brand Carlsberg and 170 thousand litres of Russian beer Baltika in the first five months of the year. By the end of May Carlsberg was holding 0.5% of Lavian beer market and Baltika 0.3%. Mikelis Cerpins attributed the stable position of the brands to the Aldaris’ policy on integrated marketing and sales marketing. Carlsberg brand can be bought in about 100 restaurants. That means that the consumer appreciated the brand a lot. Aldaris started outputting and selling Baltika in summer 2002. The main owner of Aldaris is - Baltic Beverages Holding.

The union of Bulgarian brewers is forecasting beer sales in Bulgaria between January and May this year to exceed the 143.415 million litres sold in the respective period of 2002. Before the Ledenika and Varnensko Pivo breweries have submitted their sales, there was registered the figure of over 121.273 million litres of beer sold. The largest player in the Bulgarian market was Brewinvest, the joint venture between Greece's Hellenic Bottling and Dutch brewing group Heineken NV, selling 42.182 million litres. Most producers obtained the increases due to the warm weather and the large-scale advertising campaigns launched.

    4. Barley News

The main contract barley variety of Raisio Malt, the largest Finish malt producer, this year is Scarlett, Saana being number two and Barke number three. The area for Barke is increasing considerably. The total barley area in Finland in 2003 is about 550 000 hectares. In the main grain growing area in Finland sowings have been delayed this spring. Malting barley was sown about two weeks later than normally. After the sowings the conditions have been good with some long-needed rain. The plant stands look good. At the moment the outlook is positive, much depends of course on the weather conditions during the next few weeks. Raisio Malt is Finland´s largest producer of brewing malt, with an annual capacity of 105,000 tonnes. The company has 38 employees, all committed to serving the customers. Raisio Malt forms one part of the Raisio Group a leading Finnish foods, animal feeds and paper chemicals enterprise. The Raisio Group invests heavily in research and product development, and its products are sold all over the world.

The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) projected on June 12, a 2003-04 barley crop of 12.7 million tonnes, up from 6.2 million tonnes in 2002-03. This is a return to normal production levels following two devastating years of drought. “Moisture conditions have improved across most of the Prairies, which is good news for farmers,” noted Bruce Burnett, Director of Weather and Crop Surveillance, speaking at the CWB’s annual weather and crop conditions briefing. “We are looking at a recovery from the disaster of the last two years.” However, dryness remains a concern in northern areas of Alberta and Saskatchewan. “There hasn’t been enough precipitation to offset the lingering effects of the drought in the parts of the north that were the hardest hit,” Burnett said. Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada’s biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
