Brewery news USA: Anheuser-Busch invests additional $10 mln in its Williamsburg Brewery
Anheuser-Busch is in the process of investing $10 million into its Williamsburg brewery in an effort to enable the brewery to package beer in a variety of can sizes, Williamsburg Yorktown reported on December 16.

This latest investment, announced December 5, is part of more than $39 million that has been invested into the brewery over the past three years.

“Today’s announcement is another demonstration of Anheuser-Busch’s commitment to our brewery, which has been in operation for more than 40 years,” said Rick Shippey, general manager of the Anheuser-Busch Williamsburg brewery, in a news release. “This investment includes the addition of a slim package to one of our existing can lines, which will further enhance our ability to offer new and innovative packages for our consumers.”

In an interview, Shippey expanded on the packaging investment. Currently Anheuser-Busch packages Michelob Ultra in slim cans and puts Budweiser and Bud Light into 8-ounce cans; this new equipment will enable the Williamsburg brewery to participate in that packaging effort. Additionally, it will allow the brewery to experiment with other beverages to see if there is an opportunity to expand its product line.

Whether this investment will lead to additional jobs is not yet clear, but Shippey said ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Brussels Court of Appeal decides on Belgian colour mark infringement case
The Brussels Court of Appeal recently dealt with an interesting trademark infringement case pertaining to the abstract colour mark blue owned by Belgian beer brewer Alken-Maes. Maes, which is part of the Heineken group, is one of Belgium's oldest breweries. As early as the 1960s, it began marketing its lager under a trade dress using a distinct shade of dark blue, International Law Office reported on December 16.

In 2006 Maes successfully applied for registration of an abstract colour mark, claiming protection for the International Pantone Code 2478C in relation to beers.

Maes sought injunctive relief, relying on, among other things, the infringement of its colour mark which it claimed was well known in part of Benelux. Surveys had shown that over 60% of Belgian consumers attribute the distinct shade of dark blue to beer – in particular, to Maes.

In an October 21, 2013 decision, the Brussels Court of Appeal accepted the validity of the colour mark and upheld the infringement. The verdict did not come as a bolt from the blue, as it confirmed an earlier decision of a lower court, albeit on slightly different grounds.

Regarding the infringement of the mark which Maes based on the enlarged protection offered ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Orval beer suffers from lack of monks in the abbey
Belgium’s famous Orval beer risks losing its Trappist category as there are not enough monks to brew it, L’Express reported on December 17.

In the 1980ies, there were about thirty monks brewing Orval beer in the monastery. However, today the abbey only has 12 Cistercians monks – not enough to ensure the mass production of the brand.

Besides, the volume currently produced lags far behind the demand. The output grew from 40 000 hl in 2000 to 69 000 hl in 2012, but this is almost the capacity limit, the abbey brewery’s site says.

Orval brewery is now considering whether to increase the production by employing workers from outside and thus loose its “Trappist” label, or stabilize or even diminish the production and thus face the risk of complete disappearance, it is reported.

Brewery news World: SABMiller’s Graham Mackay dies at the age of 64
Graham Mackay, the chairman of SABMiller and one of the best-known figures in the global beer industry, died on Wednesday, December 18 from cancer. He was 64, Reuters reported.

Mackay spent 35 years at SABMiller, steering its transformation from an industrial conglomerate to the world's second-largest brewer with annual sales of $34.5 billion and 200 brands including Miller Lite, Peroni and Pilsner Urquell.

He was chief executive from 1999 when the company - then called South African Breweries - listed on the London Stock Exchange, until April this year when he took a medical leave of absence following surgery on a brain tumour.

He recovered enough to resume his duties as chairman in September. His condition suddenly worsened in November, and he took a further leave.

Mackay died peacefully on Wednesday, December 18 morning, the company said, surrounded by his family, which includes three adult sons and three school-age sons.

The board said on December 18 it had appointed acting chairman John Manser as chairman until a long-term successor can be found. Guy Elliott will take Manser's place as a senior independent director.
