Brewery news USA, TX: Texas craft beer industry contributed over $2 billion into state’s economy
Texas craft beer brewers, hamstrung until recently by restrictive legislation, have continued to gain significant ground on their competitors in other states over the last several years.

A new study released by the Brewers Association shows that Texas’ craft beer industry contributed more than $2.3 billion to the state’s economy in 2012. As a result, Texas outperformed 48 other states last year in terms of the economic impact from brewing and selling of craft beers, San Antonio Business reported on December 20.

Texas ranked No. 2 last year behind only California.

The new study tracked craft beer in Texas as it flowed through a three-tier system that included production, distribution and retail sales.

New legislation approved by Texas lawmakers earlier this year will free up the industry to pursue more sales opportunities. The Texas Craft Brewers Guild has released a separate study which projects that the economic impact from the state’s craft beer industry could approach $6 billion by 2020.

There is room for improvement. The Brewers Association study notes that Texas ranked 34th nationally in terms of the economic impact of the craft beer industry on a per-capita basis.

“Recently-passed legislation is enabling packaging breweries and brew pubs alike greater flexibility for accessing craft beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Stevens Point Brewery plans fifth expansion
Stevens Point Brewery is headed into the new year with plans to expand both its brewery and its line of beers, and managers plan to continue growing for as long as demand stays strong. The brewery had a record year in 2013, which led to plans for a $1.5 million expansion, its fifth since 2009, Green Bay Press Gazette reported on December 23.

The most recent expansion, completed earlier this year, cost $2 million and included the addition of a second brew kettle, a new automated grain-handling system and 16 more fermentation tanks, also called “unitanks” because they are able to both ferment and age beer. As a result, the brewery’s annual capacity increased 25 percent, to more than 150,000 barrels.

The new expansion includes the purchase of three more unitanks, 1,000 new kegs, and upgrades to the brewery’s bottle-filler and electrical and cooling systems. Joe Martino, the brewery’s operating partner, said that as a result of this expansion, eight new jobs will be added in brewing, packaging, administration and sales in 2014. The brewery currently has 38 employees.

Martino, who purchased the brewery in 2002 with Jim Wiechmann, said 2013 revenues were the strongest ever, though he declined to give specifics. Shipments ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Ohio close to having 100 breweries
Ohio is closing in on the century mark for the number of breweries operating in the state. The count now stands at 90. With six license applications pending before the Ohio Division of Liquor Control and many other future brewers yet to submit their paperwork, it’s only a matter of time before Ohio hits 100, Akron Beacon Journal reported on December 26.

That will put Ohio in the rarefied company of California, Colorado, Michigan, Oregon and Pennsylvania, which already eclipsed that mark.

Here’s the breakdown by county:

• Franklin (14): Actual, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Barley’s, Barley’s Smokehouse, Columbus, Elevator, Four String, Gordon Biersch, New Albany Country Club, North High, Seventh Son, Sideswipe, Wolf’s Ridge and Zauber.

• Cuyahoga (12): Black Box, BottleHouse, Brew Kettle, Buckeye, Cornerstone, Fat Head’s, Great Lakes, Indigo Imp, Market Garden, Nano Brew, Portside and Rocky River.

• Hamilton (10): Blank Slate, Christian Moerlein, Double Barrel, 50 West, Listermann/Triple Digit, MadTree, Rhinegeist, Rivertown, Rock Bottom and Samuel Adams.

• Montgomery (6): Dayton, Eudora, Hairless Hare, Lock 27, Star City and Toxic Brew.

• Summit (5): Hoppin’ Frog, MadCap, Nauti Vine, Thirsty Dog and Trailhead.

• Lake (4): Brew Mentor, Cellar Rats, Little Mountain and Willoughby.

• Licking (4): Buck’s, Buckeye Lake, Granville and Homestead.

Barley news Canada: Lethbridge barley volatility expected to continue into 2014
It's been a volatile year for Lethbridge barley, with prices moving as high as C$300 per tonne in early summer, from where one Lethbridge barley broker sits, noting a bumper crop sent the market in a steep decline that's expected to continue into 2014, Grainews reported on December 23.

"Well, we went from a market in January through July where sellers, basically to some extent, had some control over the shipment and price of grain. Obviously that's why we saw the market peak out in May at around C$300 a tonne in Lethbridge," said Jim Beusekom, grain broker at MarketPlace Commodities.

"Now we're sitting in a surplus situation on feed grains and the markets are down. It started in August at a free fall, levelled out through harvest, and right now they feel like they're going to free fall again."

Despite the noted surplus of barley, recent price declines seen in December have been due to competition from other commodities for a spot in the local feed marketplace, Beusekom said.

"We started December trading Lethbridge barley at around C$180 per tonne and currently we're trading Lethbridge barley at C$160 per tonne," he said. "There's a surplus of barley, but it's the effects of other ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Founders Brewing Company to introduce its first ever smoked beer
Founders Brewing Co. will introduce Smoked Porter, brewed with a combination of beech wood–smoked barley and oak-smoked wheat malt along with a generous helping of chocolate malt, on shelves and draft lines beginning in February 2014. Like all Founders’ Backstage Series beers, Smoked Porter will be sold in 750mL bottles, with a suggested retail price to be determined, Brewbound reported on December 26.

“This is a style of beer that we’ve discussed brewing for a decade,” said Co-Founder and Vice President of Brand & Education Dave Engbers. “We weren’t able to fit it into our production schedule for years. Now, with our pilot system, our brewers have room for greater experimentation and aggressive recipe formulation. Brewing beers like this was the idea behind launching our Backstage Series and was a driving force in our investment in a pilot system this past summer.”

The brewery’s taproom in Grand Rapids, Michigan, also recently announced the addition of a draft line dedicated to their pilot system, only pouring those small batch experimental beers. A recent offering showcased the brewery’s first lager in twelve years.

Founders’ Backstage Series is made up of boundary-pushing, experimental beers. The intent of the series is to take the diehard Founders fan ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: SweetWater Brewing Company to make limited-release beer to aid people facing hardships
SweetWater and nonprofit The Giving Kitchen will work together to make a special limited-release beer called Second Helping IPA. All profits will be donated to The Giving Kitchen, which helps members of Atlanta's restaurant community facing unanticipated hardships, Atlanta Business Chronicle reported on December 25.

The beer will be available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at selected United Distributor accounts starting in mid-January.

Brewery news USA, MI: Kalamazoo based Bell's Brewery expanding to Escanaba
Kalamazoo-based Bell's Brewery is expanding to Escanaba where it expects to open a brewery at the Delta County Airport property next year.

Construction of the $1.6 million Upper Hand Brewery began in early November on a five-acre parcel, the Daily Press of Escanaba reported on December 25.

"We're looking at the first week in June to complete the building," said Kim Johnson, site superintendent for the general contractor, Gunlach Champion.

Construction of the beer-brewing and bottling operation is on schedule, Bell's Brewery President Larry Bell said.

"Everything seems to be moving along well on the construction as well as with our equipment purchasing," he said last week.

Also underway is the licensing process, with job interviews for five positions expected to start in January, Bell said.

Bell's employs more than 200 people at its brewery and pub in Kalamazoo, a distribution center in Galesburg, and a brewery and corporate office in Comstock.

The Escanaba brewery will manufacture and distribute beer, and have a sampling room, but will not sell beer directly to the public.

Bell's also is investing $15 million in its Kalamazoo brewery. That project includes a new fermentation cellar, refrigeration space, a wastewater treatment facility, and work at the office building and pub.

Brewery news USA & Ireland: Ohio brewer headed to Ireland to help launch White Hag Brewery
Ireland isn’t exactly known as a hotbed for craft beer. And that’s exactly why Joe Kearns is excited about his new head brewing job, Akron Beacon Journal reported on December 24.

Kearns, brewmaster at Main Street Grille and Brewing Co. in Garrettsville for the last two years, is headed across the Atlantic Ocean to help launch White Hag Brewery, a new 30-barrel production brewery in Sligo in the Republic of Ireland. He and his family, including two young children, are moving next month.

“It’s going to be an interesting, fun challenge,” he said about building a brewery from the ground up.

The most exciting part is the fact that the Irish people are still learning about craft beer. The country is dominated now by Heineken, Carlsberg and Coors Light, he said.

“Ireland is where we [the U.S.] were about 15 years ago,” Kearns said. “For me, it’s like having a time machine almost.”

Because he’s lived through the rise of the craft beer industry in America, he’s learned from the successes and failures and can apply those lessons in Ireland. The demand for craft beer is there, especially as people travel more outside the country, he said.

Ireland — which has a population of 4.5 million ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Grand Canyon Brewing Company plans to expand
Six years after the Grand Canyon Brewing Company opened in Williams, the company is ready to expand operations by moving to the Winchester property, Williams Grand Canyon News reported on December 24.

The sale was finalized on December 16. It came after the Williams City Council adopted an ordinance adding "microbrewery" to the city zoning code at its December 12 meeting. The Williams Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend the addition to the council at its November 21 meeting. The brewery also got clearance from the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control before the new location was finalized.

Grand Canyon Brewing Company's current location is about 6,500 square feet. The new location will provide about 18,000 square feet, not including plans for an addition, said John Peasley one of the brewery's owners.

"We're unable to keep up with production across the board," he said about the reason for the move. "We'll expect about 50 percent growth just by opening next year a new facility that has the ability to produce the beer we need, solely on orders we currently have."

The brewery owners are now in the planning phases of renovating the Winchester. According to Peasley, the whole process will cost $1.6 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Walnut River Brewing Company taps into Wichita market
When a mutual friend introduced BJ Hunt to beer brewer Rick Goehring, Hunt didn’t know much about the business “other than I’m pretty good at drinking beer.”

Goehring’s knowledge of brewing wasn’t much more refined. His brother gave him a beer-making kit in 1995 that consisted of a burlap bag with plastic lining.

“You added hot water, and that was it,” Goehring said.

The two are more advanced today and are making their first foray into Wichita with their El Dorado-based, 6-month-old Walnut River Brewing Co., which is now on tap at several Wichita bars, Kansas.com reported on December 27.

“I really want to make sure that we have good beer in south-central Kansas,” Hunt said. His dreams extend beyond here, but he said, “I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself.”

Goehring said their distributor, House of Schwan, encourages them to be in more bars, but he said, “We’re trying to control our growth as much as possible.”

He, too, is thinking bigger, but not too big.

“I don’t have dreams of grandeur, trying to become the next Coors or anything,” Goehring said.

A more sophisticated beer-making kit than his first is what inspired his brewing passion. Then a decade ago, Goehring’s wife, Lora, suggested ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Green Leaf Brewing Company opening in North Vancouver
The Lower Mainland’s latest brewery has been flying under the radar for a good while, with only passing foot traffic at Lonsdale Quay aware that beer would soon be brewing near the North Vancouver SeaBus terminal, The Province reported on December 24.

Green Leaf Brewing Co. is a venture owned by Martin Ebadi, an Iranian who came to Canada in 1997 and soon got hooked on the West Coast’s slowly evolving craft beer scene. When craft started to take off in 2008, Ebadi began looking for a prime spot.

He found one located immediately at the south entrance of the Lonsdale mini-mall. Green Leaf is just metres away from Burrard Inlet and enjoys a great view over the water to downtown Vancouver. It adjoins a small plaza with an even more open view, and the plan is to have some patio seating when the tasting lounge is complete and the licence comes through. It should be reasonably amazing come summer 2014.

It’s also a prime spot in terms of niche – the nearest breweries being either Steamworks a SeaBus journey away, or Deep Cove and Bridge Brewing a few kilometres east – and the fact that it’s right in the heart of a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Boston Beer’s Samuel Adams set to launch new spring seasonal in January
Boston Beer’s Samuel Adams brand is set to launch a new spring seasonal this January, Shanken News Daily reported on December 24.

Billed as a Belgian white ale, Samuel Adams Cold Snap is made with Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops and characterized by wheat, fruit and spice flavor notes.

The 5.3%-abv entry will be available through mid-March in six-packs ($7.99-$9.99) and 12-packs ($14.99-$17.99), as well as on draft.

The new addition joins Samuel Adams’ existing range of 10 seasonal offerings.

Brewery news USA, FL: Saltwater Brewing Company set to open December 30
Delray Beach's Saltwater Brewery is scheduled to open its doors at noon on December 30, and start a new age of locally produced beer in Delray, New Times Broward-Palm reported on December 26.

The 20 barrel brewhouse is the latest and newest of a range of Broward/Palm Beach breweries that have opened in the past few years, including Due South in 2012 and Funky Buddha's production brewery in 2013.

Starting off the inaugural winter season, the team at Saltwater will have a number of their core six beers on tap: an extra pale ale, an IPA, a DIPA, a milk stout, a Belgian blond, and a scotch ale.

Brewmaster Bill Taylor has brought his brewing skills from the icy north of Neptune's Brewery in Livingston, Montana to South Florida. "I brew my beers on style and to the best they can be," Taylor said.

Brewery news USA, IL: Imperial Oak Brewing to open in Willow Springs
A La Grange resident and his partner have started construction on a new brew pub in Willow Springs, Patch.com reported on December 26.

Grant Hamilton, of La Grange, and Brookfield brewer Brett Semenske are working together to open Imperial Oak Brewing next year. They posted pictures recently on Imperial's Facebook page of the start of construction. The wall between the brewery space and the pub space has been opened up.

The plans are to open the brewery early next year.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Four new breweries opening in the Ottawa area
As it turns out, it looks like 2014 is going to be a great year for Ottawa beer lovers.

With the microbrew movement in full swing and many of the city’s existing brewers looking to expand their facilities, at least four new breweries will be opening their doors in the nation’s capital, providing flavourful new brews for local beer aficionados, Ottawa Citizen reported on December 20.

The movement toward buying locally produced craft beers is hitting top gear, according to the LCBO’s 2012 annual report, which was released in May last year, but is the most recent information available about the market. Craft brewers saw their sales jump by more than 45 per cent last year. That trend is expected to accelerate as more microbreweries open their doors.

Among the new crop of Ottawa brewers is John VanDyk, who is in the process of creating Stittsville-area brewery Covered Bridge. VanDyk, a former federal government worker and avid homebrewer, said the ride has been rough, but it will all be worth it when he opens his doors for the first time on December 21.

“This has been a long time coming,” said VanDyk. “It’s been a bit of a rocky road, but the end should ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Station 26 Brewing opens in Stapleton
Station 26 Brewing opened on December 21 in a beautifully renovated old Denver firehouse in northeast Park Hill, Westword reported on December 23.

Owner Justin Baccary had been planning to wait one more week, but when he received his final permit from the city, he decided to open the doors.

His beers include an IPA, a stout, a Belgian-American pale ale, an English-style bitter and an interesting Cherrywood-smoked golden ale. He's got at least two other beers in the works, including a brown and a double IPA.

Baccary, a former investment banker, quit to become a brewer at Dad & Dude's Breweria in Parker more than two years ago. He left that position to start his own brewery in 2013.

He picked the east side of Denver because there are so few breweries in that part of town, and although it took a while, he finally found the old firehouse.

With three enormous garage doors and sloped concrete floors, the building is well-suited for a brewery. There is also space for a patio, which can seat sixty, and a basement where Baccary hopes to store wine and whiskey barrels for aging beer.

Brewery news UK: BBPA welcomes renewed calls for a freeze in beer duty in next year’s budget
Britain’s brewing and pub industry has welcomed renewed calls from MPs for a freeze in beer duty in the 2014 Budget. This comes as a new Early Day Motion (EDM 892) from Andrew Griffiths MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, has been tabled in Parliament and new research has revealed that UK beer drinkers are paying a massive 43 per cent of all the beer duty collected in the European Union – despite consuming just 12 per cent of the beer, BBPA reported on December 23.

The EDM calls for the Government to sustain the momentum created by the historic, March 2013 duty cut and removal of the duty escalator last year, by freezing beer duty in the 2014 Budget in order to secure over 2,000 jobs in pubs up and down the country.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive, comments:

“I hope MPs will again support the overwhelming case for a freeze in beer duty in March.

“The 2013 duty cut was a hugely popular first step, which has given the industry confidence, and had a real impact on brewing and pub investment, protecting and creating jobs all over the country.

“But it will take many years to undo the impact ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & Brazil: Kirin to brew its popular Ichiban Shibori beer in Brazil
Kirin Brewery Co. plans to produce its popular “Ichiban Shibori” draft beer in Brazil, informed sources were quoted as saying by Jiji Press on December 24.

Brasil Kirin, based in Itu in the state of Sao Paulo, will make the product, the sources said. Kirin Holdings Co., the parent of the Japanese brewer, acquired Schincariol Participacoes e Representacoes SA in 2011 and renamed the Brazilian firm Brasil Kirin.

Brazil is the third-largest beer market following China and the United States. Beer consumption in the South American country is more than double that in Japan, where demand has been sluggish.

Kirin Brewery decided to begin Ichiban Shibori production in Brazil as beer sales are expected to increase on the back of its rapid economic growth.

“We hope to nurture Brazil into the second-largest market for Ichiban Shibori after the United States,” a Kirin Brewery spokesman said.

Brewery news Ghana: Accra Brewery Ltd receives expansion approval from city authorities
Accra Brewery Ltd (ABL) has received the approval from city authorities to build a multimillion-dollar new packing lines and office complex to expand its operations, GhanaWeb reported on December 25.

Officials of the ABL said the expansion works, which would double its current capacity, was necessary if the company was to meet the growing demand for its range of 14 products in a couple of years.

The two-phased project comprises the construction of two ultra-modern packing lines, each for beer and soft drinks. This will enable the company to increase its capacity from 700,000 hectolitres of alcoholic beverages a year to 1.2 million hectolitres, while soft drinks production would double from the current 250,000.

The second phase would include facilities for offices for administration staff. The first phase would be ready in October 2013.

Projects Manager at the ABL, Mr Amos Aihoon, told journalists who were predominantly members of the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) that the packing lines would come with associated utilities, including steam facilities, compressors and generators.

There would also be a new loading gantry and exit into the eastern side of the eight-acre plot for the project which measured about twice the size of a standard stadium.

Hops news Germany: New hop varieties bringing more diversity on the German beer scene
In a microbrewery in a trendy Berlin neighbourhood, Thorsten Schoppe, one of a wave of beer-makers using new German ingredients to create non-traditional brews, pours hop pellets into a copper vat.

"We only use four ingredients, and that's one of them," said Schoppe, as the faintly sour scent of beer begins to emanate from the boiling water and malt, "so they're important".

German small-batch brewers like Schoppe have increasingly used so-called "flavour hops" to impart notes of orange, grapefruit or peach while still following the country's cherished 16th century purity law, which restricts other flavourings, AFP reported on December 27.

Until recently, Schoppe had to import special hops from the US, where craft brews have an established niche in the market.

This year, German growers, moving to capitalise on growing demand, harvested the country's first commercial-sized batch of newly developed flavour hop varieties.

"It really amazes people what kind of special flavours you can bring to a beer even within the Reinheitsgebot," the purity law, said Schoppe, who brews a double India pale ale with a citrus aroma under his Schoppe Braeu label.

"Some people don't believe you if you say this is all natural, they think you must have added some flavours," said Schoppe.

Brewery news South Africa: South Africa’s first black-owned brewery opens in Johannesburg
South Africa is a country that loves its beer. It's a product that has blossomed into a multi-billion dollar industry for commercial beverage companies. But now there's a growing popularity for craft beers made by smaller microbreweries which are opening across the country.

There's a new offering for South Africa's growing thirst for good beer. It’s called Soweto Gold, and it’s the creation of master brewer and businessman Ndumiso Madlala. He's making history by opening South Africa's first black-owned and locally brewed beer in the Johannesburg suburb of Soweto, Voice of America reported on December 21.

"A lot of people were very surprised that a black person can brew beer," he said. "So I am very proud that I have been able to demonstrate to other African people that it is possible to venture into brewing as an African person, and I so hope that a lot of people are going to follow suit in the brewing field."

Madlala has a chemical engineering background. He learned about the business as a master brewer for the world's second-largest brewing company.

"The determination and the career path that I followed actually helped me to gain a lot of experience which I am using ...More info on site
