Brewery news UK: BBPA welcomes renewed calls for a freeze in beer duty in next year’s budget
Britain’s brewing and pub industry has welcomed renewed calls from MPs for a freeze in beer duty in the 2014 Budget. This comes as a new Early Day Motion (EDM 892) from Andrew Griffiths MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, has been tabled in Parliament and new research has revealed that UK beer drinkers are paying a massive 43 per cent of all the beer duty collected in the European Union – despite consuming just 12 per cent of the beer, BBPA reported on December 23.

The EDM calls for the Government to sustain the momentum created by the historic, March 2013 duty cut and removal of the duty escalator last year, by freezing beer duty in the 2014 Budget in order to secure over 2,000 jobs in pubs up and down the country.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive, comments:

“I hope MPs will again support the overwhelming case for a freeze in beer duty in March.

“The 2013 duty cut was a hugely popular first step, which has given the industry confidence, and had a real impact on brewing and pub investment, protecting and creating jobs all over the country.

“But it will take many years to undo the impact ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & Brazil: Kirin to brew its popular Ichiban Shibori beer in Brazil
Kirin Brewery Co. plans to produce its popular “Ichiban Shibori” draft beer in Brazil, informed sources were quoted as saying by Jiji Press on December 24.

Brasil Kirin, based in Itu in the state of Sao Paulo, will make the product, the sources said. Kirin Holdings Co., the parent of the Japanese brewer, acquired Schincariol Participacoes e Representacoes SA in 2011 and renamed the Brazilian firm Brasil Kirin.

Brazil is the third-largest beer market following China and the United States. Beer consumption in the South American country is more than double that in Japan, where demand has been sluggish.

Kirin Brewery decided to begin Ichiban Shibori production in Brazil as beer sales are expected to increase on the back of its rapid economic growth.

“We hope to nurture Brazil into the second-largest market for Ichiban Shibori after the United States,” a Kirin Brewery spokesman said.

Brewery news Ghana: Accra Brewery Ltd receives expansion approval from city authorities
Accra Brewery Ltd (ABL) has received the approval from city authorities to build a multimillion-dollar new packing lines and office complex to expand its operations, GhanaWeb reported on December 25.

Officials of the ABL said the expansion works, which would double its current capacity, was necessary if the company was to meet the growing demand for its range of 14 products in a couple of years.

The two-phased project comprises the construction of two ultra-modern packing lines, each for beer and soft drinks. This will enable the company to increase its capacity from 700,000 hectolitres of alcoholic beverages a year to 1.2 million hectolitres, while soft drinks production would double from the current 250,000.

The second phase would include facilities for offices for administration staff. The first phase would be ready in October 2013.

Projects Manager at the ABL, Mr Amos Aihoon, told journalists who were predominantly members of the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) that the packing lines would come with associated utilities, including steam facilities, compressors and generators.

There would also be a new loading gantry and exit into the eastern side of the eight-acre plot for the project which measured about twice the size of a standard stadium.

Brewery news USA & Ireland: Ohio brewer headed to Ireland to help launch White Hag Brewery
Ireland isn’t exactly known as a hotbed for craft beer. And that’s exactly why Joe Kearns is excited about his new head brewing job, Akron Beacon Journal reported on December 24.

Kearns, brewmaster at Main Street Grille and Brewing Co. in Garrettsville for the last two years, is headed across the Atlantic Ocean to help launch White Hag Brewery, a new 30-barrel production brewery in Sligo in the Republic of Ireland. He and his family, including two young children, are moving next month.

“It’s going to be an interesting, fun challenge,” he said about building a brewery from the ground up.

The most exciting part is the fact that the Irish people are still learning about craft beer. The country is dominated now by Heineken, Carlsberg and Coors Light, he said.

“Ireland is where we [the U.S.] were about 15 years ago,” Kearns said. “For me, it’s like having a time machine almost.”

Because he’s lived through the rise of the craft beer industry in America, he’s learned from the successes and failures and can apply those lessons in Ireland. The demand for craft beer is there, especially as people travel more outside the country, he said.

Ireland — which has a population of 4.5 million ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South Africa’s first black-owned brewery opens in Johannesburg
South Africa is a country that loves its beer. It's a product that has blossomed into a multi-billion dollar industry for commercial beverage companies. But now there's a growing popularity for craft beers made by smaller microbreweries which are opening across the country.

There's a new offering for South Africa's growing thirst for good beer. It’s called Soweto Gold, and it’s the creation of master brewer and businessman Ndumiso Madlala. He's making history by opening South Africa's first black-owned and locally brewed beer in the Johannesburg suburb of Soweto, Voice of America reported on December 21.

"A lot of people were very surprised that a black person can brew beer," he said. "So I am very proud that I have been able to demonstrate to other African people that it is possible to venture into brewing as an African person, and I so hope that a lot of people are going to follow suit in the brewing field."

Madlala has a chemical engineering background. He learned about the business as a master brewer for the world's second-largest brewing company.

"The determination and the career path that I followed actually helped me to gain a lot of experience which I am using ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Lethbridge barley volatility expected to continue into 2014
It's been a volatile year for Lethbridge barley, with prices moving as high as C$300 per tonne in early summer, from where one Lethbridge barley broker sits, noting a bumper crop sent the market in a steep decline that's expected to continue into 2014, Grainews reported on December 23.

"Well, we went from a market in January through July where sellers, basically to some extent, had some control over the shipment and price of grain. Obviously that's why we saw the market peak out in May at around C$300 a tonne in Lethbridge," said Jim Beusekom, grain broker at MarketPlace Commodities.

"Now we're sitting in a surplus situation on feed grains and the markets are down. It started in August at a free fall, levelled out through harvest, and right now they feel like they're going to free fall again."

Despite the noted surplus of barley, recent price declines seen in December have been due to competition from other commodities for a spot in the local feed marketplace, Beusekom said.

"We started December trading Lethbridge barley at around C$180 per tonne and currently we're trading Lethbridge barley at C$160 per tonne," he said. "There's a surplus of barley, but it's the effects of other ...More info on site

Hops news Germany: New hop varieties bringing more diversity on the German beer scene
In a microbrewery in a trendy Berlin neighbourhood, Thorsten Schoppe, one of a wave of beer-makers using new German ingredients to create non-traditional brews, pours hop pellets into a copper vat.

"We only use four ingredients, and that's one of them," said Schoppe, as the faintly sour scent of beer begins to emanate from the boiling water and malt, "so they're important".

German small-batch brewers like Schoppe have increasingly used so-called "flavour hops" to impart notes of orange, grapefruit or peach while still following the country's cherished 16th century purity law, which restricts other flavourings, AFP reported on December 27.

Until recently, Schoppe had to import special hops from the US, where craft brews have an established niche in the market.

This year, German growers, moving to capitalise on growing demand, harvested the country's first commercial-sized batch of newly developed flavour hop varieties.

"It really amazes people what kind of special flavours you can bring to a beer even within the Reinheitsgebot," the purity law, said Schoppe, who brews a double India pale ale with a citrus aroma under his Schoppe Braeu label.

"Some people don't believe you if you say this is all natural, they think you must have added some flavours," said Schoppe.
