Brewery news USA, MS: Mississippi craft brewers want to sell beer to customers without distributors
Mississippi’s burgeoning craft brewing industry and beer distributors are at odds over brewers wanting to sell direct to customers who visit them, Jackson Clarion Ledger reported on January 23.

The state’s temperance laws, dating to the post-Prohibition 1930s, create a “three-tiered” system, requiring beer manufacturers to use a distributor to sell to stores and restaurants. “Brewpub” restaurants are allowed to sell beer they make for on-premises drinking, and breweries can provide free samples. But they cannot sell beer for off-site consumption.

Craft breweries, of which the state has eight, say they don’t want to disrupt this system, but would like to sell a limited amount, as 46 states allow.

“We are not trying to break new ground here,” said Quinby Chunn, owner of Southern Prohibition Brewing in Hattiesburg. “I don’t want a handout. I don’t want a tax break and I don’t want to disrupt the three-tiered system … This would be a win for us, and a win for the distributors. The people who try it will buy it at a grocery store or restaurant next time.”

The craft brewers, and distributors who have opposed such a change in law, testified before the House Temperance Subcommittee of Ways and Means on January 23.

Brewery news USA, OR: Deschutes Brewery planning expansion in Bend or another location
Deschutes Brewery, one of the nation’s biggest craft brewers, is planning the largest, most expensive expansion in its 25-year history, Bend Bulletin reported on January 23.

Along with Bend, brewery founder Gary Fish said the company is considering other locations — including the East Coast — although it will always call Bend home.

But local officials want Deschutes Brewery to expand in Bend.

“They’re the father of our beer industry here,” said Roger Lee, executive director of Economic Development for Central Oregon.

Throughout its history, Deschutes Brewery has either been under construction or planning for expansion, Fish said. The Bend-based brewery’s most pressing need is increasing its bottling and packaging capacity. But the location for that growth is still undecided, he said, along with a number of other factors.

“We have additional land below (the brewery) that we have always planned on utilizing,” Fish said. “But it’s a big project. It’s a big idea and a lot of money.”

Initial estimates put the expansion in the neighborhood of $50 million, Fish said.

“There’s a lot of places that are a lot less expensive to develop than Bend, Oregon,” he said. “As our sales continue to grow on the East Coast, at what point is it going to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NE: Nebraska Brewing Company expanding, adding new brewery
Nebraska Brewing has started the operation of a new production brewery in La Vista, Nebraska. According to the company, the new brewery will expand its annual production from 1,500 barrels to 10,000 barrel range. It will also enable the company to add 12 oz cans to its product line, Drinks Business Review reported on January 22.

The new brewery will also include a tasting room and retail aspects. It will accommodate brewery tours.

Initially, Nebraska Brewing will introduce Brunette Nut Brown Ale, EOS Hefeweizen, Cardinal Pale Ale, India Pale Ale and select seasonal beers in 12 oz cans from this new brewery.

All other beers produced currently will be brewed within the existing Papillion brewpub and will be available in draft only.

Besides this, the company is set to expand the distribution of its beers to Iowa, Connecticut, Maryland, Washington DC, and Arizona in collaboration with Doll Distributing, Craft Beer Guild Distributing of Connecticut, Legends Limited Distributing, and Quail Distributing respectively.

Nebraska Brewing also expanded its footprint to the Los Angeles market with the acquisition of Eldorado Distributing by Craft Beer Guild Distributing of California.

Brewery news USA, NM & LA: Santa Fe Brewing Company expands distribution to Louisiana
Santa Fe Brewing Company is happy to announce its expansion of distribution into the New Orleans, Louisiana area, Brewbound reported on January 21.

New Orleans has long been a city that appreciates fine food and beverages so introducing the Santa Fe Brewing line of award winning products makes perfect sense.

“We are excited to bring a little of the Southwest to the French Quarter”, said Brian Lock, president. “New Orleans has always been a hub for great food, music and beer and we are happy to be a part of LA Craft Beer distribution.”

The launch of products will begin on January 27, 2014 with a week of events in local bars, stores and restaurants.

Santa Fe Brewing Company is New Mexico’s oldest brewery. It currently distributes beers throughout New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Nevada, Kansas & Missouri, and Louisiana (New Orleans area). All of its beers are brewed, canned and bottled on premise in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Year round offers include Happy Camper IPA, Imperial Java Stout, Santa Fe Pale Ale, Santa Fe Nut Brown, State Pen Porter, and Chicken Killer Barley Wine. Seasonal styles include Freestyle Pilsner, Oktoberfest, Black IPA, and Irish Red Ale.

Brewery news USA, PA: Conshohocken Brewing Company readies for opening
In early spring 2014, co-founders John Remington and Ken Buonocore, along with award-winning Head Brewer Andrew Horne, will open the doors of their new craft brewery, Conshohocken Brewing Company. The brewery will operate an on-site Tap Room for visitors to enjoy pints of their signature brews, seasonal ales and limited small batch pilot beers, Brewbound reported on January 23.

Situated along the Schuylkill River Bike Trail, the brewery will feature two large roll-up doors on the back side of the space leading to a scenic rear deck just off of the bike path, making it a convenient stop for recreational enthusiasts utilizing the trail. The team is also quickly developing a distribution network of local bars and restaurants to share their craft with beer drinkers in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

The owners – made up of an eclectic group of craft beer enthusiasts – knew they needed a venerable lead brewer at the helm. They found Horne, who recently relocated from Portland, Oregon, back to Pennsylvania to join the team. A Villanova University graduate, Horne began his brewing career at local favorite Yards where he developed an in-depth knowledge of the Philadelphia beer scene. Horne joined the team ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Gun Hill Brewery to become first Bronx-based beermaking operation in five decades
The Gun Hill Brewery will begin crafting ales, stouts and seasonal beers next week in Williamsbridge — the first beer manufacturer out of the Bronx in nearly five decades, New York Daily News reported on January 23.

“I felt there was a need to bring that brewing tradition back to the Bronx,” said Kieran Farrell, 44, Gun Hill Brewery’s managing partner.

The 5,000-square-foot brewery is drawing on local lore to promote its brand. Farrell and his partner Dave Lopez named their company for the Gun Hill — a mound ensconced in what is now Woodlawn Cemetery, where Colonial residents stored their guns and ammo during the Revolutionary War. They also used the perch to fire down on British soldiers as they approached. “Our logo and our branding is in homage to that,” Lopez said.

Farrell, who left his job as an IT consultant to operate the brewery, and Lopez, 29, who works in finance, met as teammates on the New York Thunderdogs, a semipro baseball team based out of Manhattan.

The would-be entrepreneurs concocted their business plan in 2012, and turned to friends and colleagues to raise the start-up money.

The brewers-to-be both have Bronx roots: Lopez’ grandfather was a football standout at Evander Childs High ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Big Sky Brewing Company drops trademark lawsuit against AB InBev
Anheuser-Busch InBev has removed its "Hold my beer and watch this" videos from its Bud Light YouTube page, and the craft brewer that sued over use of the phrase has dropped the legal action, ABC Fox Montana reported on January 23.

Big Sky Brewing Co. of Missoula, MT, sued AB InBev in December, saying it had a trademark for the phrase "Hold my beer and watch this," and had used the slogan since 2004. Big Sky dropped the suit on January 22 in exchange for AB InBev removing the videos, created by actor John Krasinski of the TV show "The Office" and his business partner. There was no financial settlement. The videos, which debuted in early December, were popular and had millions of views before being taken down on January 15.

Brewery news USA, SC: Swamp Rabbit Brewery to open in Greenville in March
Ben Pierson has been waiting for the arrival of the brewing system since summertime. It came on three large flatbed trucks, all the way across country from Oregon, Greenville News reported on January 23.

The Swamp Rabbit Brewery & Taproom in downtown Greenville is planning to open to the public in mid-March, but first things first — making the beer.

The 10-barrel JV Northwest system must be assembled, calibrated and tested, but brewing will begin the first few days of February.

The Swamp Rabbit Brewery (named after the trail that begins in its location) will be a bit different from the area’s other larger-scale production breweries.

It’s more of a Bavarian, village-type brewery.

Pierson, known as an elder statesman of Greenville-area brewers since he came to Greenville to run the now-defunct Downtown Brewing Co. in 1995, renovated a post office for the future brewery. The building will feature a taproom alongside the brewing system.

The state’s new “pint law” makes it so that Swamp Rabbit can sell three pints for consumption on site.

The brewery will have four base beers: American Pale, English IPA, Belgian White and Oktoberfest Lager. The first seasonal will be a Bohemian Pils.

This is a welcome addition to the area’s beer culture. The ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Witch's Hat Brewery plans to relocate to a bigger facility
Husband and wife duo Ryan and Erin Cottongim, of Ann Arbor, are experiencing a lot of success in their two short years as the owners of South Lyon’s Witch’s Hat Brewery.

The business has grown so much that the couple will move from their 1,600-square-foot location on Pontiac Trail into a 7,000-square-foot facility down the street, Observer & Eccentric reported on January 23.

The move is expected to take place in December 2014, but in the interim the business will continue to operate out of its Pontiac Trail location.

In addition to the relocation, the Cottongims said they will look to hire an additional 10 to 20 employees, more than doubling their staff of nine people.

Witch’s Hat will increase its brewing capability to 1.24 million pints of beer – or 2,500 barrels – in the new facility, after brewing 350 barrels in its first year and close to 600 in year two.

Brewery news USA, AZ: Lonesome Valley Brewing is Prescott Valley’s first brewery
The doors are open at Prescott Valley's first brewery. Lonesome Valley Brewing opened in late October, co-owner and brewer Brian Cole said, adding that it took around six months for the pub to go from concept to construction, Prescott Daily Courier reported on January 21.

"The biggest challenge to opening was physical. Working here seven days a week, 24-hours a day, sleeping here, eating here - I definitely would have to say it was physically challenging," Cole said. "At the end it's all worth it."

Cole has been brewing beer for about 10 years, he said. His beers showcase different flavors with lots of body.

"When you are sitting there brewing beer you always think about bringing your beer to people, bringing your art, bringing your passion of what you're doing," Cole said. "So, this was the logical step. To do something like the original local public house; a place where people can come in have a beer."

In addition to serving their own beer, Lonesome Valley Brewing offers a variety of libations such as Woodchuck amber cider, Marble IPA, and red and white wines.

"We are trying to bring a varied selection of craft beers to the community," Cole said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Bentley Brewing Company coming to Southbridge
To celebrate the official kickoff of Bentley Brewing Company, brewers Mike Lynch and Adam Golka will be hosting a tasting of their beers in Southbridge on February 8. They will be filling growlers and offering samples of their Bentley IPA, Southbridge Ordinary Bitter, and select brewery-only releases, Boston.com reported on January 22.

Bentley’s Southbridge Ordinary Bitter combines traditional British Maris Otter malt with Sterling hops.

“It balances plenty of flavor and drinkability,” says Lynch. Bentley IPA is an American style IPA, with Nugget, Columbus, Chinook, and Apollo hops.

Bentley Brewing shares the same building with the Dark Horse Tavern, who is hosting the grand opening. The brewery operates in a 10-barrel capacity brewhouse in downtown Southbridge.

Brewery news USA, CA: Fort Point Brewing Company opens in San Francisco
San Francisco’s newest beer producer, Fort Point Beer Company deserves the title of the most scenic brewery in the city, San Francisco Chronicle reported on January 22.

Fort Point is located on the easternmost edge of the Presidio, on Crissy Field. The guys behind the nascent brewery are brothers Tyler and Justin Catalan, who also own Mill Valley Beerworks across the bridge; for this new project, they’ve brought along brewer Mike Schnebeck from Mill Valley.

At Fort Point, they have a 40-barrel system, and are currently shipping their first beers around town. Their current offerings are spearheaded by an exclusive beer made for Tosca Cafe, a Kolsch-style ale (4.5% ABV, 15 IBU) made with Mt. Tamalpais yerba santa. In fact, they’re looking to collaborate on more beers; they’ve also got a beer made with Sebastian Sauer of Germany’s Freigeist Bierkultur, made with smoked malts and charred manzanita.

Also on the Fort Point slate of offerings:

Park (4.7%, 19): A hoppy wheat beer hopped with Citra hops Villager (6.5%, 42): “San Francisco style IPA” KSA (4.6%, 17) : “A San Francisco take on the classic Kolsch style” Westfalia (5.6%, 26): A version of the Nuremberge-style rotbier

Brewery news South Korea: New laws finally allow small brewers to expand sales
The smell of fresh paint lingers at the renovated Vaneheim microbrewery in northeast Seoul, a sign of owner Kim Jung Ha’s optimism after a decade of struggling with the economics of South Korea’s lopsided beer market, Bloomberg reported on January 24.

Under revisions to alcohol laws announced by the finance ministry on January 23, house brewers like Kim will be allowed to distribute their beer through other bars and restaurants for the first time, while paying a lower rate of tax. The changes are expected to bring more competition to a $1.3 billion beer market that grew 6 percent in 2013 and is dominated by Hite Jinro Co. and Oriental Brewery Co., re-acquired this week by the world’s biggest beer maker Anheuser-Busch InBev NV.

The changes come as President Park Geun Hye begins her second year in office promising a more “creative” economy that supports small- and medium-sized companies.

“The past 10 years have been a process of bitter learning,” Kim, a 34-year-old who studied both culinary arts and business in college, said last month at Vaneheim, which has seating for 110 people on wooden tables with a window allowing customers to see the polished metal brewing tanks. “Although it’s a small and ...More info on site

Brewery news World: SABMiller Africa Executive’s view of M&A prospects
Opportunities for mergers have become far fewer but bigger, SABMiller Africa's managing director said in an interview on January 22 on the margins of the World Economic Forum, according to Wall Street Journal.

While Mark Bowman didn’t want to weigh in on speculation that SABMiller – the world’s second-largest brewer by sales – could be a takeover target for the world’s No. 1, Anheuser-Busch InBev, he noted the main issue in the beer industry now was “whether bigger players will start consuming each other.”

In Africa, where Mr. Bowman oversees SABMiller’s operations, acquisition prospects are slim, he said, but more options could be found in Asia.

For the first time at SAB, Africa contributed more to profit than Europe in the most recent financial year. The continent’s beer consumption is growing faster than that of any other region, but the drink remains a luxury for most Africans, Mr. Bowman said.

SABMiller owns a 20% stake in the African beer operations of France’s Castel Group, a closely held family company. Mr. Bowman said it was up to Castel to decide whether it wants to sell those operations, but he added he hoped SABMiller would be a “natural candidate” if the smaller company did decide to ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & India: Diageo challenges Karnataka High Court decision to declare United Breweries stake sale void
United Breweries Limited (UB) and Diageo have challenged the decision of a Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court (HC) setting aside the sale of 6.96% stake in United Spirits Limited (USL) held by UB to Diageo, Bar & Bench reported on January 22.

When the matter was heard on January 20 by a Division Bench of Justices AK Patnaik and Ibrahim Kalifulla, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi represented Diageo while Senior Counsel Harish Salve appeared for UB. Senior Advocate TR Andhyarujina appeared for a consortium of creditors.

The sale of equity shares by UB to Diageo was initially approved by a single judge Bench of the HC. Subsequently, in a plea by the creditors of the UB, the sale was declared void by a Division Bench of the HC on the ground of improper valuation of shares and lack of bona fides as winding up petition against UB was pending admission.

Both Diageo and UB have claimed that the permission of sale of assets by the single judge pending admission of a winding up suit is the correct law and the Division Bench has erred in holding that the same was without jurisdiction.

Diageo has contended that as per Section 536 (2) of the ...More info on site

Brewery news South Sudan: SABMiller keeps brewing at half capacity in troubled South Sudan
When the brewery shuts down, that's when you really need to start worrying. Any Africa hack will tell you that from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to Sierra Leone, even when war is at its worst, breweries continue to operate, Mail & Guardian reported on January 24.

The crisis in South Sudan that started on December 15 has compelled embassies and nongovernmental organisations to evacuate staff and travel warnings have been issued for foreigners to leave the country immediately. According to the United Nations, more than 500,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and thousands have been killed because of the fighting.

But the South African- and United Kingdom-based SABMiller seems destined to follow in the footsteps of brave African producers that make sure villages across Africa get their beer, regardless of the circumstances. It's not going to be easy, however.

Established in 2009 and expanded during the euphoria of independence for South Sudan in 2011, the brewery remains the only manufacturer in the country's fledgling capital Juba, according to its spokesperson, Nigel Fairbrass.

When violence broke out at the end of last year, 53 SABMiller expatriates were evacuated to South Africa, the UK and Uganda and the brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: SABMiller to increase investment in brewery expansion in Nigeria
SABMiller said on January 23 that it will be increasing its investment in its Nigerian subsidiary, Intafact Beverages Ltd, with a further USD110 million in order to triple capacity at its Onitsha brewery, according to London South East.

Brewing giant SABMiller made an initial investment of over USD100 million in the Onitsha brewery, in the largest single investment in Anambra State for almost 20 years, it said.

The company said that following growth and the success of its 'Hero Lager' product, an additional USD110 million will be pumped into the brewery to triple its current annual capacity from 700,000 to 2.1 million hectolitres. The brewery already directly employs 300 local people and the investment will lead to the creation of a further 400 direct jobs.

Simon Harvey, SABMiller Nigeria Managing Director, said, "We have made significant investments over the past five years in Nigeria and this announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment in the country."

The capacity expansion work has begun, said SABMiller, and is set to complete in the first quarter of 2015.

The brewery will continue to produce brands including Hero Lager, Castle Milk Stout and non-alcoholic malt beverages Grand Malt and Beta Malt.
