Brewery news USA, MI & TX: Atwater Brewery plans $15 million second brewery
Detroit’s Atwater Brewing produced less than 30,000 barrels in 2013 but that hasn’t stopped president and CEO, Mark Reith, from embarking on a $15 million expansion project outside of his home state, Brewbound reported on February 20.

Atwater is planning to build a 100,000-barrel, secondary production facility in Austin Texas, an emerging market with a “tremendous amount of opportunity,” Reith said.

“We are bringing Detroit everywhere,” he said. “What is the best way to do that? Instead of shipping product 2,000 miles away, we decided we could build another facility.”

The new brewery, which Reith hopes will be producing beers around this time next year, will initially allow Atwater to brew about 50,000 more barrels per year.

“We have been studying the trends and looking at this idea for about five years,” he said. “Just because we aren’t producing 1 million barrels per year doesn’t mean we can’t plan a second brewery at a different scale.”

Atwater is currently sold in 17 states but local demand is far outpacing supply, Reith said.

“We don’t want to grow too fast but I think we have very realistic goals,” he said. “About 65 percent of our overall business is local (Michigan) and that is obviously a huge part ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario government defends existing alcohol sales monopoly
Ontarians can only purchase alcohol from The Beer Store or LCBO. Convenience store companies argue the public is ready for more variety in their private alcohol retailers, but the Ontario government says the province is well-served by the current model, Toronto Sun reported on February 20.

Susie Heath, a spokesman for Finance Minister Charles Sousa, said the LCBO provides C$1.6 billion a year in revenue to the provincial government that helps pay for hospitals, schools and other public services.

“Our system is long-established and strikes the right balance between consumer access and social responsibility,” Heath said in a statement on February 20.

Tom Moher, vice-president of central Canada operations for Mac’s Convenience Stores Inc., said on February 19 that the sector has experience selling age-restricted products such as tobacco and is ready for the added responsibility of alcohol.

A survey carried out on behalf of the Ontario Convenience Stores Association (OCSA) revealed that corner store staff were more effective than employees at either the LCBO or The Beer Store in keeping restricted products out of the hands of minors, Moher said.

Heath pointed to a study done by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) of students in Grades 7 to 12 last year ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Short’s Brewing Co. is set for $5 million expansion
Short’s Brewing Co. announced on February 19 a $5 million brewery expansion that, when completed, will double production capacity to 60,000 barrels, according to Brewbound.

Construction on the expansion, which is being financed by a combination of bank loans and roughly $500,000 in available cash from Short’s, is expected to begin this summer.

“This expansion is the ideal situation for the production side of Short’s in the upcoming years,” Tyler Glaze, the brewery’s operations manager said in a statement. “It’ll open up so many more options for what we’re able to do to keep up with Michigan-driven demand. At the same time, it will allow us to get even more creative in our brewing, enhance the quality of the product we’re distributing, and stay in the Elk Rapids community that many Short’s employees call home.”

As part of the expansion, Short’s will spend $3 million to upgrade some of its brewing and packaging equipment, including a new wastewater pre-treatment system and bottling line.

Short’s has grown its production more than 30 percent in each of the last five years, and the brewery has even bigger goals in mind for 2014.

“We’ll probably see a 70 percent increase,” said Scott Newman-Bale, a brewery partner.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Beach Haus brewery expanding to produce 10 times more beer
East Coast Beer Co., the Point Pleasant Beach-based maker of Beach Haus beer, will boost its production and varieties once settled into its new microbrewery in Belmar, Asbury Park Press reported on February 21.

The company, which recently released an exterior rendering of the microbrewery, will begin remodeling the space that formerly housed Freedman’s Bakery in Belmar as soon as the blueprints receive final approval from the borough. It should open by the end of this year, said Katrina Foster, a company spokeswoman.

“They really want to keep the Jersey Shore look and feel because that’s what their brand is,” she said. “It’s going to be very reminiscent of what the Beach Haus brand looks like – fun, laid back, like their beers Winter Rental, Kick Back.”

The company will not know the final cost of remodeling until it finalizes its plans, Foster said.

The architect described the exterior of the 15,000-square-foot, two-story microbrewery as “industrial chic,” which features brick walls, ceiling-to-floor windows and V-shaped columns. The interior will feature a four-vessel brewing system and tasting room, where customers may try samples of unique styles from taps on a small bar, she said.

The company produces four styles under the Beach Haus name as well ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors launches Miller Fortune lager nationwide
Now available nationwide, MillerCoors’ new Miller Fortune is an un-distilled, spirited golden lager with a richer, balanced taste and 6.9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Miller Fortune is the largest launch of a completely new brand from MillerCoors, Drinks Business Review reported on February 20.

Developed to be served in a rocks glass, Miller Fortune is brewed with specially-roasted caramel malt and cascade hops for a moderately bitter flavor with a hint of sweetness. The brand attributes communicate a sophisticated edge meant to inspire consumers to turn any occasion into something unforgettable.

"With the rise of cocktail culture, we know consumers are looking for new products and flavors," said MillerCoors CMO Andy England. "With that in mind, we developed Miller Fortune to provide consumers with a unique and deliciously balanced option to elevate their drinking experience."

Miller Fortune is available in 6- and 12-pack jet-black bottles and in 16- and 24-ounce battleship gray single-serve cans.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Descendants Beer & Beverage Company launches in Wellesley
Ontario’s first new craft brewery launch of 2014 quietly took place this past weekend at The Bent Elbow in Waterloo, where the first pints of beer from Descendants Beer & Beverage Co. started pouring on February 14, Canadian Beer News reported on February 17.

Currently brewing in temporary location in Cambridge while renovations are being done on a permanent home in the historic Wellesley Mill in the nearby village of Wellesley, Descendants is owned and operated by Robin Molloy – a former brewer at Barrie’s Flying Monkeys who has trained at Chicago’s Siebel Institute and VLB Berlin – and his wife Carin Lee Brooks.

The first beer from Descendants is Harbinger Pale Ale, a 5.6% abv and 38 IBU American-style pale ale, with an American Blonde Ale and Belgian Blonde Ale planned to follow soon.

Descendants products will be available exclusively on tap in the Kitchener-Waterloo, Niagara and Sarnia/London regions for now, although retail sales through the LCBO are part of the future plans for the fledgling brewery.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Revived New Ontario Brewing plans spring launch in North Bay
Almost 100 years its original namesake brewery was destroyed by fire, a revived version of New Ontario Brewing is getting set to bring local brewing back to North Bay.

The new company is aiming to start selling beer this spring, with three flagship brands in the works – Slippery Slope Cream Ale, Deep Draught Dark Ale and Hopocalypse IPA – along with a rotating series of seasonal beers. Further details are sparse at the moment.

Brewery news USA, OR: Buoy Beer Company opens brewery in Astoria
A new brewery just opened in Astoria – Buoy Beer Company. They will eventually have a restaurant and taproom at the brewery. Three rooms, one location. For now, the taproom is open. Restaurant is on the way, Seattle Post Intelligencer reported on February 20.

The brewery is up and running now and the space looks great. The tap room is open and the full restaurant will be complete by summertime.

Here is what Buoy Beer Company has to say about itself:

“Here, one of the West’s most relentless rivers meets the wilderness of an entire ocean. The unstoppable meets the unyielding. And here, a community with grit and backbone make that meeting work. The river that built a town is home for building our beer. It will be new beer, with a few centuries under its belt.”

Brewery news USA, NY: Steuben Brewing Company building brewery on Keuka Lake
The growth of craft brewing in the area continues, as construction is well underway at Steuben Brewing Company on the west side of Keuka Lake, Corning Leader reported on February 18.

The brewery is being built by the Zimar family on their 12-acre property overlooking the Keuka bluff, and is targeting a spring opening.

It's located in the heart of the Keuka wine trail and will be operated by longtime Pulteney residents Jim and Candy Zimar and their sons, Chad and Rick.

Chad Zimar, the brewmaster, says he's been homebrewing for several years, honing five or six ales and lagers that will be the staples at Steuben Brewing. He also plans to regularly experiment with new creations.

The new brewery will have a seven-barrel system capable of turning out 200-gallon batches, along with a smaller pilot system that produces 30-gallon batches for seasonals and "experimentals." There will also be a separate cask-conditioning system to add extra ingredients and flavors at the end of the brewing process, Zimar said.

The front of the brewery will have a tasting room and an outdoor patio overlooking Keuka Lake where customers can sample the brews by the flight, half-pint or pint, and get a growler to go.

Brewery news USA, FL: Persimmon Hollow Brewing to become West Volusia County’s first microbrewery
Andy Sistrunk and Robbie Carelli admit they’re living a beer lover’s dream.

After years of planning, the two friends — an insurance agent and a multimedia technician by day — are preparing to open the first microbrewery in western Volusia County. If all goes as planned, the Persimmon Hollow Brewing Co. will come alive sometime this summer in what is now a 5,000-square-foot garage in downtown DeLand, Daytona Beach News Journal reported on February 17.

The brewery would be the fourth in Volusia County, after Ormond Brewing Co., New Smyrna Beach Brewing Co. and Tomoka Brewery.

Before DeLand was founded in 1876, the area where it sits was referred to as Persimmon Hollow. Sistrunk and Carelli said they chose the name because it reflects their connection with the DeLand area, along with the city’s history.

The new microbrewery will include a tasting room, offering patrons samples of the company’s own beers and one or two local “guest” craft beers.

The brewing itself will happen in the other half of the building. Sistrunk and Carelli said they intend to have a glass wall divide the two spaces, making the brewing process visible to tasting room patrons.

The staff will be limited, at least at first — just ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Gig Harbor Brewing Company is coming this fall
The Gig Harbor Brewing Company, a product of years of work and planning by co-owner John Fosberg, is coming this fall. The brewery and taproom is slated to open in late November, likely somewhere in Gig Harbor North or at Uptown, Peninsula Gateway reported on February 19.

Craft beer has been Fosberg’s passion for several years.

“Craft beer has come a long way in the last 15 years,” he said. “We really started getting into it when we started visiting Northwest craft beer festivals.”

Fosberg and his associates attended festivals in Washington, including the Gig Harbor Beer Festival, which just started a couple years ago.

He began to take tasting classes, and his interest grew even further. He said he was drawn to the passion of the people in the industry.

“These guys just love beer,” Fosberg said. “That made it extremely attractive. People are really serious about the process, art and science.”

Startup costs and his busy life — he also manages a creative agency, Fosberg Media Group — initially prevented the brewery from going beyond the planning stages. Once his kids moved on to college, Fosberg wanted a new project to take on, so he began to secure investors for a brewery.

Brewery news USA, FL: St. Pete Brewing Company opening in St. Petersburg
Three years ago Tom Williams’s St. Pete Brewing Company debuted its signature beer and seemed poised to open in downtown St. Petersburg. But his plan to open at Baywalk did not work out when the downtown shopping plaza switched hands, and finding a new spot proved as elusive as finding the right head brewer, Creative Loafing Tampa reported on February 19.

“It’s tough,’’ he says. “We thought we were going to be the first ones.”

Four breweries have opened in St. Petersburg since then, three of them downtown, part of a craft beer explosion in the area so remarkable that even the New York Times has taken notice. All the while, Williams has helped fuel these developments through the financing company he owns.

But now, at long last, with a building of his own and the right brewer as a partner, Williams is ready to go from concept to reality.

Any week now — in time for Tampa Bay Beer Week, he hopes — Williams will roll up the garage door below the hop-draped banyan mural of his new space. With 12 taps, a 10-barrel brew-house he bought from Big Storm Brewing in Odessa, 50 barrels of fermenter capacity, an 850-square-foot tasting room ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Canuck Empire Brewing is open for business in Abbotsford
The rapid-fire series of new brewery openings in BC this year looks like it won’t be abating any time soon, with another newcomer now open for business in Abbotsford.

Canuck Empire Brewing is a start-up from long-time homebrewer Brandon Wiggins that aims to create “Distinctive Beers for Offbeat Canadians”, Canadian Beer News reported on February 20.

The first offering from the brewery is Coast Trail Pale Ale, a 5.5% abv and 35 IBU ale described as follows:

Coast Trail Pale Ale is West Coast lifestyle in a bottle. Bright copper colour, tons of crisp citrusy hop character, followed by a slightly sweet bready malt flavour.

Joining the Canuck Empire line-up next month will be Backcountry IPA (5.8% abv / 65 IBU), and fall seasonal Pumpkin Patch Ale (6% abv / 30 IBU) will follow in September.

Coast Trail Pale Ale is available now in 650 ml bottles at select liquor stores in British Columbia.

Barley news Ukraine: Grain and other commodity export deals grind to a halt as violence spreads
Ukrainian steel, grain and other commodity export deals have virtually ground to a halt as violence in Kiev that has killed dozens this week triggered fears of port closures and defaults, driving up risk premiums on prices for future shipments, Reuters reported on February 20.

Ports were operating on February 20, allowing goods to leave the country, but traders said new deals were proving difficult on concerns that violence may spread beyond the capital to Ukraine's Black Sea ports in the south.

Banks are reluctant to finance new deals while traders are worried about meeting existing contract deadlines, sources say.

Demonstrations erupted in November after President Viktor Yanukovich bowed to Russian pressure and pulled out of a planned trade and cooperation deal with Brussels. Ukraine is the world's No. 2 grain exporter and about No. 7 in steel.

"Since it became more violent I haven't seen any trade. People are working from home, our office is closed," said a grain trader at an international commodities trade house.

"We already have commitments and you don't want to add to the current commitments," he said.

One Ukraine-based coal trader said that demand for his products had been weak recently, while a steel-products trader said that he had done ...More info on site

Brewery news Portugal: Budejovicky Budvar wins exclusive rights to the Budweiser trademark in Portugal
The Czech brewery Budvar says a Portuguese trade court has ruled that it will have the exclusive rights to the Budweiser trademark in the country, cancelling the rights owned by rival Anheuser-Busch InBev, The Associated Press reported on February 19.

State-owned Budejovicky Budvar NP has been fighting with Anheuser-Busch for over a century over use of the Budweiser name. The legal battle continued when Anheuser-Busch was taken over by Belgium's InBev in 2008 to create the world's largest brewer.

In a statement on February 19, Budvar says the Lisbon court banned AB InBev from selling any beer under the name Budweiser. It gave Budvar the sole rights to the Budweiser trademark in Portugal.

AB InBev spokeswoman Karen Couck said in an email the ruling has not affected the sales of its beer "under the established Bud brand in Portugal."

Brewery news World: SABMiller developing beers to attract wine and spirit drinkers
SABMiller is developing beers to attract wine and spirits drinkers as it looks to counter similar innovation drives from rival brewers AB InBev and Heineken to introduce new beer styles, Marketing Week reported on February 19.

The world’s second biggest by sales says it will launch a range of “fruitier” and “sweeter” liquids moving forward in the hopes of appealing to the growing number of discerning alcohol drinkers.

It is currently doing “extensive research” in understanding how to develop beers it can market more prominently around factors such as colour, smell and alcohol level.

Alan Clark, chief executive of SABMiller, told analysts on a conference call on February 19, that the focus on alternative beers aimed to counter “taste harmonisation”, wherein many lager brands end up tasting similar due to brewers attempting to maximise the appeal of their global brands.

He added: “There are many opportunities to innovate and expand beyond beer with a range of products that move from non-alcoholic, to lower-alcohol versions….and to flavoured alcoholic drinks and ciders. We have seen opportunities where we can reverse the trend of spirits and wines gaining share from beer. That’s certainly an objective for ourselves in more mature markets where we think the ...More info on site
