The Dutch brewing force, Heineken N.V., announced on June 23 that in the first half of 2003, the sales volume of the Group is lagging behind expectations. The company expects net profit excluding non-recurring results to be around the same level for the first half of 2003 as reached for the comparable period of 2002. Heineken stresses that a substantial part of beer sales is realized in the summer-months of July and August. Therefore, a more specific forecast about the profit expectation for the full year of 2003, can, as usual, only be announced with the publication of the half-year results on 10 September 2003. Heineken is confronted with a combination of exceptional factors in a number of beer markets that is having an adverse effect on beer consumption. According to the company, these factors include the slowdown of economic growth, the consequences of the recent war in Iraq, bad weather in North America and parts of Europe, and the SARS disease in the Far East...more info

The Mexican top brewer, Grupo Modelo, announced on June 23 that it is eyeing a new beer plant in several locations. Modelo's plans are to spend $1.5 billion over five years there to create Latin America's largest brewery, authorities in the Pacific coastal state of Colima said, Reuters reported. Modelo's investor relations director Jose Pares said “no decision had been made about a new plant for Modelo, maker of Corona beer, the top selling foreign brew in the United States.” "Colima is one of the many locations we are looking at," Pares said. "We are constantly evaluating where we could construct a new plant, and at the moment we are carrying out explorations to determine if it is viable or not (in Colima)...more info

This month marks the Anheuser-Busch Cartersville brewery's 10th anniversary, Anheuser-Busch reported. The first beer shipment of Budweiser 12-ounce cans left the brewery, by truck, June 23, 1993. In its first year of production, the Cartersville brewery employed 400 employees and produced 3.4 million barrels of beer. Today, 10 years later, the facility employs 600 people and produces more than 7.5 million barrels of beer per year. Although the 10-year span has brought many changes, the brewery's commitment to quality and safety have remained constant, according to Steve McDaniel, plant manager for the Cartersville brewery. "Our commitment to quality focuses on quality products, quality employees and a quality workplace. It also extends to the brewery's dedication to the Cartersville community and the environment. Quality and safety definitely bind everything we do together."...more info

    4. Barley News

The outbreak of the SARS lung disease in China has hit at world malt barley prices, the ATL newspaper reports. As the huge Chinese market withdraws from beer consumption, it affects world demand for malt barley, and prices fall again following the recent hike in the wake of the disastrous Australian and American harvests. Moreover, other countries have also cut their beer consumption, notably Germany, as the general economic situation is grim, and demand has been saturated by an increased use of feed barley of satisfactory quality. However, an upturn could come quickly, the paper writes. World stocks are low, so a positive turn in any of the above variables could quickly boost prices again.

South Africa registered 155,000 tons of domestic malting barley deliveries in 2002 versus only 75,000 tons in 2001. It is expected that receivals could even be larger from crop 2003. Planting is going on now. There is no demand for import barley time being.
Barley planting has commenced in large parts of Australia. The soil moisture situation has improved. The best situation is reported from Western Australia, followed by South Australia, while Victoria and New South Wales need more precipitation for planting and good vegetation of the crop. Because of the moisture deficit in the East the AWF estimate of coming crop is "only" 6.2 million tons. Two years ago the crop was 8.4 million, last year 3.5 million tons.
