Hops against Alzheimer disease!

ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers have screened more than 1600 plants used in Chinese medicine to see if any of these could be used to treat the Alzheimer disease, which is the most frequently observed neurodegenerative disorder in Japan and other advanced countries. Guess what they found as a promising plant - hops! It is generally accepted that Alzheimer disease is caused by a certain protein (Aβ) and the production of this protein was inhibited by a hops extract. A major component resulting in the inhibitory activity was purified, and its chemical identity was determined to be Garcinielliptone HC. For the experiments, model mice with Alzheimer disease with hop extracts consumed daily in their drinking water showed significant mitigation of memory impairment at ages of 9 and 12 months. Moreover, oral administration of hop extracts also prevented an emotional disturbance. Despite lifelong consumption of hop extracts, no deleterious side effects were observed at any age. So if you don't forget your daily share of hops you won't forget anything any longer.

Brewery news USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance reports results for 2013
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), an independent craft brewing company, announced on March 6 final 2013 financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31st. The Company also confirmed previously reported guidance for 2014 based on continued sales momentum and focus on growing its bottom line.

Highlights for the fourth quarter 2013 include

A strong close to 2013 highlighted by 10% growth in depletions over the fourth quarter of 2012, the third consecutive quarter of double-digit depletion growth, reflecting continued momentum across the Kona Brewing, Redhook Ale Brewery, Omission and Square Mile Cider Company brand families and stabilization of the Widmer Brothers brand.

An increase in net sales and branded beer shipments of 5% and 6%, respectively, in the fourth quarter attributable to strong sales execution, as well as support from the company’s national partners, wholesalers and retailers.

A decrease in gross margin rate by 100 basis points to 26.0% in the fourth quarter compared to the fourth quarter last year primarily resulting from shifts in product and geographic mix and increased distribution-related costs.

Diluted earnings per share (“EPS”) of $0.04 for the quarter, an increase over fourth quarter 2012 EPS of $0.02, primarily due to improved gross profit and a decrease ...More info on site

Barley news Canada, AB: Grain market analyst shares optimism with agricultural producers in Peace Region
'Weather the Storm' is the message Peace Region agricultural producers have been hearing a lot these days.

That was a large part of what Market Analyst Greg Kostal had to say during the Grain Market Outlook seminar at the Peace Country Classic Agricultural Show on March 6, according to HQ Grande Prairie.

Kostal says prices are low right now, but he thinks the market can only go up, though it might take some time to get there.

"Riding it out I think is a good way to put it into perspective. We've had a year to two years in some commodities where prices have sagged, and the historic charts would say that we would be in a position to grind sideways for one, and if we were to look at this in another one to two years, I think we're going to see a better price prospect outcome."

He also discussed what he calls the "Made in Canada Congestion Problem," adding that the spread between port and elevator has never been wider.

"The weakest link in the whole distribution or transportation is inability of rail movement to surge to this large crop size. So to regulate that and find equilibrium, speed of supply versus speed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Kansas lawmakers to ease restrictions in local liquor laws
Proposals on tap for legislative committees would help Kansas small breweries and phase in grocery store sales of strong beer, wine and liquor, but it wasn't clear on March 5 how far lawmakers would go in further repudiating the state's dry history, according to Sfgate.com.

The Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee had a hearing on March 5 on a bill to ease restrictions on home brewers so that they'd be able to share their beer with friends and have them judged at competitions, rather than limiting home brews to personal or family consumption. The committee expects to vote on the bill next week, and the measure passed the House overwhelmingly last month.

The Senate committee approved a bill last week to allow microbreweries to make 30,000 barrels of beer a year, doubling the current limit. The House Commerce, Labor and Economic Development Committee had a hearing on a bill that would go further, eliminating the production limit allowing microbreweries to bring their own beer to restaurants, bars and liquor stores, instead of requiring them to go through distribution companies. However, the Kansas Beer Wholesalers Association opposes it.

The House committee also planned to begin debate on March 6 on a bill expanding ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Craft beer revolution in East Vancouver
There are a total of 13 breweries and brew pubs across Vancouver, with eight of them now situated in East Van — and more on the way — and that has quickly turned East Van into the craft-brewing centre of BC, the Province reported on March 6.

Victoria, which jumped on the craft-brew bandwagon before Vancouver, has fallen behind with just eight breweries listed on the B.C. Beer Guide website. Regina and Saskatoon each have 12 craft breweries and Toronto has 18 such establishments.

But the nine breweries in East Van may be a higher concentration than anywhere else in Canada, at least as far as beer booster Adam Chatburn knows.

“I would say that’s the case, especially with more and more going in there all the time,” said Chatburn, who is president of the Vancouver chapter of the Campaign for Real Ale Society in BC.

“This area is only going to get denser,” said Chatburn. “It’s likely already the densest concentration of breweries in Canada and it might well be in the whole of North America.”

This concentration of breweries in such a small area is unusual but that’s primarily the result of a city regulation which requires M2 industrial zoning for breweries, a ...More info on site

Brewery news EU & USA: The Brewers of Europe calling for a level playing field for small brewers exporting to the US
Having been tabled during the 3rd round, Europe’s brewers are calling for a level playing field on tax relief for small brewers to be included in negotiations at the 4th round of TTIP talks between the EU and the US next week, The Brewers of Europe reported on March 7.

Currently small US brewers exporting to the EU are eligible for the reduced tax rate both in the US and the EU, whilst a European brewer exporting to the US gets no such break. Just as small brewers from the US can receive significant discounts when exporting to the EU, the ambition is that small brewers from the EU benefit from the same discount in the US as the domestic brewers. In the US, whilst the larger breweries pay a federal excise tax of $18 per barrel, small brewers pay just $7 per barrel on the first 60,000 barrels they brew. Research from Ernst & Young and Regioplan published in February 2014 showed that the $100 billion US market is the largest export market for Europe’s brewers, with 26 out of 28 EU countries exporting there. Based upon the 2 million US barrel threshold, the majority of Europe’s 4500 breweries ...More info on site

Barley news World: Turmoil in Ukraine signalling buyers may have to import more corn from the US
Ukraine’s escalating turmoil is signalling that grain buyers may be forced to import more from the U.S. as corn prices rally to a six-month high, Bloomberg reported on March 5.

Farmers in Ukraine are holding commodity supplies to hedge against a devaluing currency, slowing shipments, according to Cary Sifferath, a regional director for the U.S. Grains Council. Buyers in Asia may be reluctant to purchase from Eastern Europe on supply-disruption concerns, according to Jefferies Bache LLC. Ukraine was projected to be the world’s third-biggest corn exporter and sixth-largest wheat shipper this season. The U.S. is the top shipper of both grains.

Russia’s troop buildup in Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula roiled grain markets this week. Corn futures climbed to the highest since September in Chicago on March 5, rebounding from last year’s 40 percent plunge. On March 4, wheat reached the highest in 12 weeks. Black Sea port and shipping operations mostly continued as normal, according to Western Bulk ASA, which runs 120 commodity vessels.

The Russian military actions “ caught everyone off guard, because grain prices were at the low end of the five-year range,” Diana Klemme, vice president Grain Services Corp., an adviser and cash grain broker in Atlanta, said in a telephone ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Head brewer leaves Christian Moerlein Brewing Company
Christian Moerlein Brewing Company has lost its head brewer. Richard Dubé, vice president of brewing and quality, has resigned, Cincinnati.com reported on March 5.

Christian Moerlein owner Greg Hardman issued this statement:

"We appreciate the contribution Richard Dubé made in assembling our team of talented brewers as we have a strong team of innovators that will continue to drive our commitment to craft brewing. As we have enjoyed tremendous growth at our Over-the-Rhine brewery in a short period of time, Christian Moerlein will continue to strengthen its position in the craft beer category. We do wish Richard the best of luck as he pursues other endeavors and thank our team for their continued creativity and commitment to our beers and our brand."

Dubé came on board in 2011 as brewmaster at the Moerlein Lager House. That followed a 10-year hiatus from full-time brewing, when he taught science at Lloyd Memorial High School. He stayed involved with the industry by consulting for the Chicago-based Siebel Institute of Technology, a highly regarded center of brewing science. Before that, he worked in the industry for 20 years at Canadian breweries Molson and Labatt's before joining Boston Beer Co., brewing its Samuel Adams beers in Boston and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: New Holland Brewing to expand distribution to Tennessee this month
New Holland Brewing, a US-based craft brewery and artisan distiller, is set to expand the distribution of its products to Tennessee starting mid-March 2014. The company has partnered with Lipman Brothers to act as its distributors for the initial territory roll out, Drinks Business Review reported on March 6.

New Holland offers year round series of craft beer including Mad Hatter IPA, Sundog Amber Ale, Full Circle Kolsh, Monkey King Saison, The Poet Oatmeal Stout and Dragon's Milk Barrel-Aged Stout.

It also offers spirits including Beer Barrel Bourbon, Knickerbocker Gin and Hatter Royale Hopped Whiskey and several seasonal offerings.

Products of the company will be available at any craft beer and spirits retailer in the state.

Brewery news USA, NC: Highland Brewing set to expand
A major expansion is in the works at Asheville’s Highland Brewing Co., a project that will increase the brewery’s production by more than 50 percent, and eventually much more. To fund it, Highland is exploring issuing $6.5 million in industrial development revenue bonds, Asheville Citizen-Times reported on March 6.

A team from Highland will meet on March 10 with the Buncombe County Industrial Facilities and Pollution Control Authority to discuss the expansion, brewery founder and president Oscar Wong said. “It’s really just the first step,” toward possibly issuing bonds, he said.

But the expansion will happen and soon.

“It would begin this year and be complete by next year,” he said. “We are on a fast track.”

Highland is looking to add equipment including another bottling machine, and make improvements on its building.

Highland, which opened in 1994 as the city’s first craft brewery, currently makes about 38,000 barrels of beer annually for sale in nine states. With its expansion, that production would jump to 60-65,000 barrels.

“And by adding tanks, we could ramp it up to 100,000 barrels down the road in our current location,” Wong said.

If Highland does fund its project with bonds, they would be sold to investors to raise money for expansion, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation to boost Corona Light advertising
Last year Mexican import Corona Light tried to gain ground against its larger US light beer foes with ads featuring talking sheep that encouraged drinkers to "ditch the herd" and try something new, AdvertisingAge reported on March 7.

But for 2014 the brand is ditching the sheep in favor of a new ad approach that puts more emphasis on the liquid inside the bottle. The campaign pitches the brand as the choice for people who are "ready for a light beer you can actually taste." The ads are part of a new strategy to target middle-aged drinkers rather than twentysomethings. The campaign is by Omnicom Group's Goodby Silverstein & Partners, which has held the account since late 2011.

One TV ad, called "Epiphany," makes a pretty blatant attempt to differentiate the brand from more youthful-targeted beers like Bud Light by featuring a man who is relieved to be in a bar where his shoes aren't sticking to the floor. And the "hot brunette" that catches his eye from across the room happens to be his wife.

It's not as if Corona Light failed with its earlier ad attempts to target domestic lights. The brand grew dollar sales by 5.6% in the year ending ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Twin Leaf Brewery opens in Asheville’s brewing district
Another new brewery is opening in Asheville’s unofficial brewing district on March 8. Twin Leaf Brewery will be the 16th craft brewery in Buncombe County. Four other breweries are located within walking distance, Asheville Citizen-Times reported on March 6.

Twin Leaf is owned by the husband and wife team of Steph and Tim Weber, former engineers who were previously living in Pennsylvania before moving here, and were attracted to WNC by the outdoors culture, Steph Weber said. Both are skilled homebrewers and they will handle brewing duties at Twin Leaf, she said.

The brewery is located in a 5,000-square-foot space once used as a photo studio. Twin Leaf is using a 10-barrel brewing system. For starters, it will have five house beers — an ESB, a Belgian wit, a dark oatmeal stout, a Belgian tripel and an IPA, she said. “We tend to brew on the dryer side with lots of malt complexity and very hops forward,” she continued.

Along with the main production brewery, Twin Leaf will have a half-barrel pilot system to make one-time beers.

For now, the Twin Leaf beers will only be sold on draft at the brewery.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Surlie Brewing Company coming to Abbotsford
It’s only been a couple of weeks since the city of Abbotsford got its first craft brewery with the opening of Canuck Empire Brewing. Now that number has been doubled with the launch this week of Surlie Brewing, Canadian Beer News reported on March 6.

Founded by Tim Brown, a veteran of the BC brewing scene who has previously brewed at Mission Springs and Dead Frog, Surlie has been launched small but ambitiously, debuting with a 6.5% Strong Belgian ale called Solitaire.

Surlie Solitaire cannot be purchased or sampled at the brewery due to zoning bylaws, but it is being distributed now to select liquor stores in British Columbia.

Brewery news UK: AB InBev to launch rum-flavoured Cubanisto beer this month
A rum-flavoured beer, named Cubanisto, will be launched by AB InBev this month, Morning Advertiser reported on March 5.

The 5.9% ABV spirit-beer, inspired by the Caribbean, is purported to taste of “citrus, orange zest and lime” and have the “aroma of caramelised cane sugar and treacle”.

AB InBev UK’s senior brand manager Emily Kraftman said: “Cubanisto is a brand waiting to be discovered by tech-savvy trend setters, and enjoyed when socialising and celebrating with friends. AB InBev has a track record of launching successful innovations, with Stella Artois Cidre in the UK being a great example. “

Cubanisto will be available in 330ml UV-light sensitive coated bottles and will be showcased in the on-trade, with bottle glorifiers, stencils and illuminators to make it “perfect for nightlife occasions”.

“There will be secret consumer experiences which can only be unlocked through social media, and new technology will be used to enable fans to gain access to exclusive content,” the company added.

Hops news South Africa: SABMiller’s hop farms supply their products to an increasing number of craft brewers
Reflective of the burgeoning craft-beer industry, SAB Hops Farms now supplies hops to about 140 microbreweries, from as few as 10 just five years ago, Business Day reported on March 7.

SAB Hops Farms, a wholly owned subsidiary of South African Breweries (SAB), has under its breeding programme produced three aroma-flavour varieties of the crop, which have become popular among microbrewers, says management.

But despite the rapid growth of the craft-beer market, microbreweries use only about 2% of SAB Hops Farms’ total production, given the small scale of their operations.

A number of microbreweries also choose to import their hops, which are produced more cheaply in the crop’s natural environment in parts of Europe, and in other parts of the northern hemisphere that are further from the equator.

Rustenburg-based Brauhaus am Damm has doubled its monthly craft-beer production over the past two years to 8,000 litres a month, an example of how popular craft beer is becoming. The German-styled microbrewery has grown on demand from craft-beer festivals, German school events and the growing number of bars, restaurants and pubs serving craft beer, says its brewer Imke Pape.

SAB Hops Farms and eight private growers have operations in South Africa, which have earned "international recognition and ...More info on site
