Gushing - again, oxygen is the enemy?

ABSTRACT
U.S. researchers have looked into the gushing potential of different bitter acids as tetrahydro-isoalpha acids, rho-isoalpha acids, hexahydro-isoalpha acids and isoalpha acids. With a model system they came to the conclusion that all of them have an influence on gushing. Gushing was observed only in products with oxidative degradation of isoalpha acids yielding in gushing initiators that are also carried through further processing into the reduced versions of isoalpha acids. So take good care of the accurate storage of your isomerized products in the brewery!

Brewery news USA, MI: Mitten Brewing Company expanding in Grand Rapids
Mitten Brewing Company plans to significantly expand its beer production capacity with a new facility on Grand Rapids’ west side, MiBiz reported on March 10.

Based on “off the page” results in the micro brewery’s first full year in business, Mitten’s owners are in the midst of a $550,000 expansion to bring online a new production facility and more than triple the seating at its existing restaurant.

The additional 10,000-square-foot production space would allow Mitten to expand to a 20-barrel system from its existing three-barrel system, according to co-founder Chris Andrus. The brewery leased and plans to combine two adjacent 5,000-square-foot suites at the site and hopes to have the equipment installed and running by the first of July, he said. The first product could begin going out the door in August.

“This will allow us to make enough of the beers we sell the most of, and be consistent and do them well — rather than brew around the clock like we are now,” said Andrus, who started Mitten Brewing with long-time friend Max Trierweiler.

The company plans to invest $300,000 to add new plumbing, HVAC and brewing equipment at the site, which would be solely used for production. The beers it produces ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Trinity Brewing to build second brewery in Denver in 2016
Colorado Springs-based Trinity Brewing, which has won awards and admiration for its artisanal ales and deep roster of saisons, is laying plans for a second location in Denver that also would serve as a hub for out-of-state distribution, Denver Post reported on March 7.

Founder and head brewer Jason Yester confirmed Trinity is targeting 2016 for its ambitious Denver project, which he said would likely involve a 30-barrel brewing system in a roughly 8,000 square-foot space in a warehouse district.

Trinity operates under a brewpub license. Yester’s beers feature at craft beer-friendly restaurants. Most new brewery start-ups in Denver have adopted the kitchen-free tap room model, and a brewpub of Trinity’s caliber would be welcome addition to the scene.

“We almost doubled our volume last year by opening up sales in Denver, and most of our sales out of town were in Denver specifically,” Yester said. “We went from 790 to 1,390 (barrels). It just feels like Denver is a really good fit.”

Yester said Trinity’s brewpub in Colorado Springs, which runs on a 12-barrel system, would continue to operate. If all goes as planned, Trinity will join a growing number of Colorado craft breweries branching out to additional locations, including Dry Dock Brewing, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Stone Brewing expanding distribution across Washington
Stone Brewing, a US-based brewery, has partnered with Great Artisan Beverage and other distributors to expand the distribution of its craft beers across Washington, Drink Business Review reported on March 10.

Other distributors include The Odom, Craig Stein Distributing, Marine View Beverage, Crown Distributing and Sound Beverage.

Founded in 1996, the US-based brewery offers hop-centric beers including year-round and special releases.

Stone Brewing sales vice president Todd Karnig said: "Their passion for craft beer is evident and we look forward to working with them to make Stone beer more readily available to our Washington fans."

Great Artisan Beverage president Nick Gagliardi said that Great Artisan Beverage's Washington network is thrilled to expand their footprint with one of the craft breweries in the US.

"GAB wholesalers now represent Stone in Washington, Idaho and Alaska. The teams from Stone and GAB together share an intense passion for craft and specialty beer," Gagliardi added.

Great Artisan has a network of independent beverage wholesalers offering sales, marketing and distribution opportunities to craft and specialty beverage suppliers across Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Montana.

Earlier in march 2014, Stone Brewing also rolled out Stone Mixed 12 Pack, a pack of twelve 12oz beers, including Stone IPA, Stone Ruination IPA, Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR & NM: Portland-based brewery planning to expand into Albuquerque
The team behind PINTS Brewing Co. in Portland, OR, could have a location open in Albuquerque by late spring, ABQ Journal quoted the company’s brew master Alan Taylor on March 7.

It will open under the Ponderosa Brewing Co. name, and Matt Kollaja will serve as head brewer.

“The equipment is being built right now, and the building is being retrofitted for us,” Taylor said this week. He said the company’s connection to Albuquerque is its founder, Chad Rennaker, a real estate developer who is involved in other projects in the Sawmill district through his company PacifiCap.

PINTS opened two years ago and operates as a coffee shop by day and tap room by night. It’s known for its urban setting and leans toward what Taylor calls hop-driven “Northwest beers.”

But the Albuquerque location won’t be a replica of the Portland version. Because it’s going into a more residential area, Ponderosa will have a stronger food focus in an effort to be more family-friendly. The beers also will be designed to suit the area.

Brewery news USA, MN: Northgate Brewing expanding in Northeast Minneapolis
After just one year, Northgate Brewing is expanding. The Northeast Minneapolis brewery just signed a lease on a new space, which will include a 1,500-square-foot taproom, Thelinemedia.com reported on March 12.

Co-owner Adam Sjogren says neither he nor his partners anticipated the rapid growth. At around 750 square feet, Northgate’s current location is one of the smallest brewing spaces around. “We were very small,” Sjogren says. “There was not a lot of room to grow.”

With almost ten times the square footage, including the taproom, the new space will allow Sjogren to experiment with different brewing techniques that will be even more true to the brewery’s focus on English session ales.

“We really want to be able to have the space to do some barrel aging, some real ales—cask stuff—and be able to make some one-off batches and test them in the taproom to see what people really like,” Sjogren says.

Most English-style ales get a bad wrap in the States, Sjogren says. They don’t pack the same slap of citrusy hops and don’t have the same high alcohol content Minnesota beer drinkers have become accustomed to in their microbrews.

By nature of the ingredients and brewing process, these session ales don’t travel or store ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC,GA & VA: Aberdeen brewery planning to expand beer distribution to Georgia, Virginia
Railhouse Brewery in Aberdeen is planning to expand craft beer distribution to Georgia and Virginia by July, thanks to sales growth of 216 percent in 2013 over 2012, Triangle Business Journal reported on March 10.

During its first year of operation in 2010, Railhouse sold 360 barrels. This year, owners Brian Evitts and Mike Ratkowski are expanding production to 2,000 barrels.

“We are thrilled with the tremendous growth we have witnessed over the past year and are excited to see Railhouse in the hands of so many customers throughout North and South Carolina,” says Brian Evitts, co-owner and brewmaster. “Our continued expansion has been carefully planned, but we have exceeded our own expectations.”

The brewery was founded in 2010 in Aberdeen and is currently the only brewery in Moore County. At the time, the establishment was a 3,000-square-foot space, which has since doubled in size. In the past six months, the brewers have purchased three additional fermentation and conditioning tanks and will add three more by the end of the year to brew their English-style ales.

Three weeks ago, the beer hit shelves in three local Harris Teeter locations, and is now being sold in 23 Harris Teeter locations across the state, says Lisa ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, QC & ON: Bierbrier Brewing expands distribution to Ontario
Montreal’s Bierbrier Brewing has announced that its brands will be available outside of Quebec for the first time, via an expansion into the Ontario market, Canadian Beer News reported on March 10.

Founded in 1999 by Charles Bierbrier – whose family name literally means “beer brewer” – the company recently dissolved a partnership with La Compagnie de Bière Brisset that had started in 2011, and is once again self-distributing in Quebec and Ontario, with beer being brewed at facilities in both provinces.

All three Bierbrier brands – Bierbrier Premium Ale, Bierbrier Pilsner Lager and Joe Beef Special Pils – are now available at select bars and restaurants in Ontario.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Refined Fool Brewing to open in Sarnia in May
A group of ten partners will soon being opening the first brewery since the start of the modern craft brewing age in Sarnia, Ontario, according to a recent article on Blackburn News.

Refined Fool Brewing is currently completing set-up and starting brewing, with an aim to be opening and offering beer by the first weekend in May.

The brewery features 200 litre brew kettles and 400 litre fermenters, with a half-dozen beers planned to be available at opening.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing Company coming to Cherry Hill in May
Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing Company is planning on opening its doors in Cherry Hill to its 1,800 square foot tasting room, within the production facility, this May. The brewery replaces the Flying Fish Brewery that left Cherry Hill in 2013, Patch.com reported on March 07.

In anticipation of the grand opening, Forgotten Boardwalk is giving away 1,000 keys to their brewery. A majority of the keys will be disbursed with the help of New Jersey Craft Beer and Philly Beer Scene starting April 1, 2014. Limited amounts of keys will be dispersed, at random, to local craft beer bars for their loyal customers.

The brewery plans five ales for distribution plus additional beers that will be exclusive to the tasting room.

Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing expects to produce 4,500 barrels in its first year.

Brewery news USA, IL: Strange Pelican Brewery changes name to Aquanaut
Strange Pelican, Phil Tadros' soon-to-open brewery in Chicago’s Lincoln Square, will now be called Aquanaut after legal action was threatened by an Oregon brewery with a similar name, DNAinfo reported on March 10.

Tadros said the decision to change the craft brewery's name came after the Pelican Pub & Brewery in Pacific City, Oregon recently expressed concern over the similarity of the two names.

Rather than "throw money at an angry brewery," Tadros said he opted for the name change.

"We’re disappointed for sure. But before we get out of the gate, do we want a couple of lawsuits? No," he said.

Aquanaut is the name of an India Pale Ale produced by Strange Pelican.

Tadros took over the lease of former brewery 4 Paws in January.

Aquanaut's focus will be production and distribution. Tadros has already been offering samplings of its brews in festivals and special events. Tadros said the brewery is ready to produce beer and is currently waiting on city licensing approval, which said he expects "any day."

He said on March 10 that he is hoping to open a bar restaurant, Oyster Pail, in East Lakeview by May 1.

Brewery news UK: World’s leading brewers launching new beers to meet Britain’s thirst for sweeter alternatives
AB InBev’s first foray into the spirits beer category with Cubanisto reflects Britain’s growing thirst for sweeter alternatives with Heineken and SABMiller also looking to exploit the trend and make beer more appealing in nightclubs, Marketing Week reported on March 10.

The Budweiser owner is launching its rum-based variant at the end of the month (24 March) with a campaign targeting “tech savvy trendsetters”. Activity pitches the beer as “perfect for nightlife occasions” and will span pop-up parties and live art performances throughout 2014.

The popularity of spirit beers has been growing for several years, extending the wider category to key trading sessions for the big night out occasion. The upswing is expected to push the flavoured on-trade market to be worth £400 mln by 2016, according to alcohol consultants CGA Strategy, with core consumers coming from the 18 to 25 range.

Global brewers are now experimenting with different mixers to capitalise on the shift and cement their presence in a market still lacking the premium credentials of its world or craft beer counterparts.

Emily Kraftman, senior brand manager for Cubanisto, said the spirit beer’s premium status is being pushed through offering drinkers access to exclusive “trendy”, “money can’t buy events”.

Brewery news Romania: Heineken sells former Grivita brewery to a group of real estate investors
Heineken Romania sold the former Grivita brewery in downtown Bucharest, at the end of 2013, to a group of real estate investors, among whom Ionut Dumitrescu, the founder of real estate consultancy firm Eurisko, Balkans.com reported on March 12.

The deal was completed at the end of 2013, when Heineken Romania sold the terrain and buildings attached to the former Grivita factory. The sale was valued at EUR 10 – 15 million.

“At the end of 2013 we finalised the sale process for the property”, according to Onno Rombouts, Managing Director for Heineken Romania. Rombouts didn’t provide any details regarding the value of the transaction or the buyer’s identity.

According to zf.ro, the 2.7 ha property has entered the portfolio of several investors, among which Ionut Dumitrescu, founder of Eurisko, current CBRE Romania. A plan to develop office buildings and a hypermarket on the property passed through City Hall last year, however the plan included the preservation of several historical buildings that were part of the complex.
