Next generation sequencing for next generation hops?


ABSTRACT
Hops have a relatively large and complex genome, which combined with the fact that hops are dioecious (with male and female plants), makes the genetics of hops somewhat difficult to research and understand. Large numbers of high quality molecular markers are required in order execute genetic studies with enough finesse to generate reliable outcomes. These US researchers report the application of next generation sequencing technology to the development of high quality molecular makers in hops. The steady improvement in the number and quality of molecular markers available for hops will provide for more target cultivar development (for disease resistance or aroma for example), and may be applied to “true to type” testing (either in field or of processed product). It might possibly also contribute fundamentally to our understanding of the biology of hop and its valuable metabolites. Where will it get us? Time will tell!

Brewery news Mexico & USA: Baja Brewing expands exports to California
Baja Brewing Company, the original craft brewery in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, has announced that its flagship beer, Cabotella (CAH-bo-TAY-uh), is now available in California. With this expansion, Cabotella can be found in five states in the U.S. Southwest – Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, Brewbound reported on March 19.

Distributed by Southern Wine and Spirits of California, the Mexican ale will be available in restaurants, bars and retail stores throughout the state.

“We started exporting Cabotella in 2012 to share it with our friends and family back home in Colorado, so they could experience a little bit of Cabo,” said Jordan Gardenhire, co-founder and brewmaster, Baja Brewing Company. “It’s really exciting for us to see how the beer has grown and gained fans throughout the Southwest. The next logical step was to enter California, a great market for Mexican craft beer, and Southern Wine and Spirits of California is the perfect partner for this expansion.”

Brewery news USA, TX: Karbach Brewing Company expanding in Houston
After announcing expansion plans late last year, Karbach Brewing Co. is now ready to break ground on a facility that will allow the brewery to grow significantly. Brewmaster Eric Warner and crew are launching on March 25 the $15 million expansion project in Houston, Brewbound reported on March 19.

Once completed, the brewery will be able to produce 60,000 barrels annually with room for future growth. In addition to more beer, Karbach also expects to add a projected 100 jobs to the Houston community. The new facility will house a 120 barrel German-designed brewhouse, tasting room, private event space and kitchen.

Karbach drew national attention in 2013 when cited by The New Yorker as the 2nd fastest-growing brewery in the nation. The brewery produced nearly 19,000 barrels in 2013 and is on pace to hit 29,000 barrels this year. Local demand has been a strong driver in the quick growth with distribution limited to the greater Houston area, San Antonio and Austin.


Brewery news USA, NY: Adirondack Brewery to triple capacity with expansion
The Adirondack Brewery will invest $5 million to triple its beer output at its brewery in upstate New York, Albany Business Review reported on March 19.

To make room for the expansion, the brewery recently spent $1.2 million buying four acres connected to its location in the resort town of Lake George, an hour north of Albany.

It is another sign of how the national craft-beer craze is benefiting the region's economy. Almost every brewery falls under the definition of "craft," except for the giant labels such as Budweiser and MillerCoors.

The Adirondack Brewery expansion will take five years to complete, says owner John Carr. Once done, capacity will rise to 35,000 barrels of beer a year. One beer barrel is about 31 gallons.

Carr also plans to open a distillery on-site, named High Peaks. It will make 5,000 cases of whiskeys and ryes each year, under the label Cloud Splitter. Other components of the expansion include a tasting room, and a space to host small events.

The brewery has six full-time employees, including four brewers. The expansion should more than double employment, said brewery spokeswoman Laura Stevens.


Brewery news USA, CA: AleSmith Brewing Company announces $10 mln expansion
AleSmith Brewing Company has announced plans for a $10 million expansion project that will increase its brewing capacity to 150,000 barrels per year, Brewbound reported on March 20.

The project, which will be financed by loans from California Bank and Trust and money from the sale of its existing facility, is expected to be complete by January of 2015.

The brewery has leased a 105,000 sq. ft. building in its hometown of San Diego, CA for the project that will ultimately provide the company with a new brewhouse, cellar and bottling line from Krones.

“It was a great relief to get this lease signed and have this first game piece on the board,” said Peter Zien, brewery owner. “We’re probably in our tenth or eleventh month now of having weekly expansion meetings.”

The expansion comes as the brewery is rubbing up against its current 15,000-barrel capacity, a figure it projects to hit this year.

Moving into the new place will allow the brewery to grow at a graduated pace toward the new ultimate ceiling of 150,000 barrels – current projections tally 25,000 barrels in 2015; 44,000 are forecasted for the following year.

Brewery news USA, MD: Union Craft Brewing plans to double production in Clipper Mill
Union Craft Brewing Co. is taking more space in Clipper Mill as it looks to double the amount of beer it produces. The nearly two-year-old North Baltimore brewery has signed a lease for an additional 3,000 square feet. The space is adjacent to the 7,200 square feet it currently occupies, Baltimore Business Journal reported on March 20.

Adam Benesch, a Union co-founder, said the new space will house three new 60-barrel fermenters. The brewery produced 2,700 barrels in its first year and expects to reach 5,400 barrels after the expansion. The space will also allow Union to expand its current 50-seat taproom.

Union, known for its flagship Duckpin and Balt brews, has plans to expand its line of beers.

One beer in the works is dubbed Anthem, a golden ale named after the Star-Spangled Banner, which was written in Baltimore. Union also plans to brew additional beers throughout summer and fall but specifics were not yet available.

Down the line, Benesch said Union would like to expand outside of Maryland and Washington, D.C. But he reiterated it’s a long-term goal.

Brewery news USA, CA: Enegren Brewing Company to expand facilities in Moorpark
Enegren Brewing Company began in 2011 as a three-barrel (93 gallon) brewery with two fermentors in a 1,200-squarefoot warehouse in Moorpark. Since opening, the company has tripled fermentation capacity and doubled the warehouse square footage. The company outgrew the brewery and began plans for an expansion, Moorpark Acorn reported on March 20.

On Feb. 25, Enegren Brewing received approval from the City of Moorpark to begin building a 15-barrel brewery. This expansion increases company brewing capacity by 500 percent with the ability to expand over the next five years.

The company expects the brewery expansion to be operational in 9 to 12 months.

The new brewery will have a larger tasting room with increased seating capacity and standing room. The larger tasting room also enables the company to hold more food and beer pairing events for customers.

The tasting room will continue to serve taster flights, glasses of beer, and 1-liter and 2-liter growlers (refillable take-home bottles).

To commemorate this expansion, Enegren Brewing is releasing a special bourbonbarrel aged Belgian Strong Ale named Batch 100. The brew is the 100th batch brewed at the brewery. Brewery news USA, WA: Boundary Bay Brewery begins expansion in Bellingham
After operating at capacity for years, Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro is finally moving forward with expansion plans. Three large tanks were being installed Thursday, March 20, in a 4,000-square-foot space next to the brewer, Bellingham Herald reported on March 20.

Once the new tanks are in operation, production should increase by about 30 percent, said Janet Lightner, general manager at Boundary Bay. The plan is to expand the company's market area with its current selection of brews, but the expansion also will free things up to allow the brewery to create some new beers, she said.

Boundary has had its eye on expansion for a couple of years, but it was delayed because of the high demand for these tanks. Now that they have arrived, the increased production should start happening sometime before the end of May.

The brewery is also making some changes to benefit customers. The plan is to open a small beer garden on the south side of the facility.

Also on tap is a Ski-to-Sea beer, an ESB brand that will be in 12-ounce cans. Boundary's most recent foray into canned beer, the Irish Red for St. Patrick's Day, was well-received, Lightner said.


Brewery news Canada, ON: Innocente Brewing coming to Waterloo in May
The Waterloo Region Record reports that a new brewery will soon be up and running in Waterloo, with the opening of Innocente Brewing planned for later this spring, Canadian Beer News reported on March 20.

Founded by Steven Innocente – an avid homebrewer who decided to end his two decade career as a cancer scientist to start up a brewery – Innocente Brewing will focus on hop-forward ales that will be available primarily on cask at pubs throughout Southern Ontario.

Innocente is currently putting finishing touches on the brewery, retail store and taproom, and hopes to be in operation by sometime in May.


Brewery news USA, ND: Drekker Brewing Company to open in Fargo area this year
A new brewing company with a name that springs from the area’s Scandinavian roots will start up soon in the Fargo area. Drekker Brewing Co. is the brainchild of Mark Bjornstad, Jesse Feigum and cousins Darin Montplaisir and Mason Montplaisir, a group of local beer enthusiasts who have been brewing together for years, In-Forum reported on March 20.

Feigum, self-proclaimed head of “nerdery” for Drekker, said the company is in the process of securing a lease on a building in Fargo that will be home to the brewery.

The founders are not giving any details until everything is in place, but Feigum stressed it will happen.

“We basically have everything planned out and ready to go,” he said.

Bjornstad, who is president of the company, said they plan to open the brewery with a taproom, and they intend to offer tours and education sessions on beer.

He said Drekker’s brews will respect traditional beer styles while offering surprises here and there.

“We like to take things that are all over in the beverage and dining industry and integrate them. Do something unique, do something different,” he said.

Brewery news USA, CA: Mad Fritz Brewing coming to St. Helena
Nile Zacherle of Calistoga is establishing a microbrewery in St. Helena “to produce small quantities of distinctive, high-quality beers for sale to a select group of local accounts and direct to consumers,” he wrote in a letter to the city, Napa Valley Register reported on March 19.

The Planning Commission approved a use permit for Mad Fritz Brewing Company. Commission Chair Matthew Heil said it’s good to see a local family put St. Helena back on the brewing scene, after the closing of the Silverado Brewing Company in 2012.

“We’re not talking about Miller Lite here,” Heil said. “This is primo, some of the best stuff you can get.”

Heil said the project helps diversify St. Helena’s economy and is ideal for the city’s industrial park.

Zacherle said he’s been making wine in the Napa Valley since 2000, but he worked for Anderson Valley Brewing Company in the mid-1990s.

“I want to take what I’ve learned with winemaking and make high-end beer in the Napa Valley, utilizing barrel aging and other techniques,” Zacherle told the commission.

The microbrewery will produce one batch of 65 gallons per week initially, and ramp up to as many as 325 gallons.

Brewery news USA, TX: Galveston Island Brewing prepares for opening
Things are hopping at Galveston Island Brewing, where two new fermenters arrived this week, bringing the total number to four and the venture closer to its May opening, Galvestondailynews.com reported on March 20.

With the fermenters, owner Mark Dell’Osso has all the equipment necessary to begin test runs at the brewery. Galveston Island Brewing will produce about a dozen classic styles of beer from around the world, such as Irish stout, Belgium ale and American pale ale, among others.


Brewery news USA, MI: Pigeon Hill brewery opens in Muskegon
Pigeon Hill brewery in Muskegon opened its doors to the public on Friday, March 21, according to Michigan Business Review.

"It is completely surreal," said Michael Brower, one of the brewery's three owners. "We've been working for this moment for quite a while. It's a dream come true."

Pigeon Hill's tap list will feature the Walter Blonde Ale, the 1762 Russian Imperial Stout, the Besto Bohemian Pilsner, the LMFAO (Let Me Fetch An Oatmeal) Stout, the Shifting Sands IPA and the Petite Soleil Saison. The brewery will also offer non-alcoholic pink lemonade and glass bottle Faygo.

The brewery's notable features include its interior design, which incorporates tables made with wood salvaged from the bottom of Muskegon Lake from the Lumber Era, a pool table built by Brunswick that was reportedly played on by silent film star and Bluffton vacationer Buster Keaton and light fixtures recycled from S.D. Warren (the Sappi paper mill), Continental Motors Co. and Brunswick Bowling.

Pigeon Hill is the second microbrewery to open in Muskegon. Unruly Brewing Co., located two blocks down the road, began serving beer late last year.



Brewery news USA, CO: Longmont’s Left Hand Brewing attempts to trademark "Nitro"
Left Hand Brewing in Longmont has been looking to get control of the word "Nitro" since 2011, first by wresting the trademark away from a small Canadian brewer that had never used it and then by filing a trademark claim of its own on the word as it relates to beer, Westword reported on March 20.

But that effort bubbled over last week when three much larger breweries -- Boston Beer Corp. (which makes Sam Adams), Diageo (which brews Guinness) and Anheuser Busch -- all filed motions with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office protesting the effort.

And on March 20, Left Hand's Longmont neighbor, Oskar Blues Brewing, revealed that it plans to market one of its own beers using the word Nitro starting next week.

On March 19, Left Hand posted a statement on its website saying that its goals in trademarking the term "Nitro" have been misunderstood.

Brewery news Belarus: Lidskoe Pivo’s exports up 36% last year
In 2013, OAO Lidskoe Pivo increased the export of beer by 36%, Audrius Miksys, managing director at Lidskoe Pivo, said in an interview to BelTA on March 19.

“Last year was probably the best in the 130-year history of Lidskoe Pivo brewery,” he said. Thanks to modernization, the sales increased by 11% from a year earlier. Beer export surged by 36%, that of kvass by 65%.

Lidskoe Pivo held about 20.5% of the Belarusian beer market in 2013. Sales on the domestic market went up by 9.5% though the beer market shrank by 3%. Lidskoe Pivo sold 72 million litres of beer domestically and 14 million litres internationally.

Founded in 1876, the Lidskoe Pivo brewery was transformed into a joint stock company in 2000.
