Are hops the solution to gushing?
ABSTRACT
Wouldn't it be great to have a solution to gushing made of
a raw material that goes into beer anyway? Well, hops
possibly contain what we are looking for. These Belgian
researchers tested a hop-based antifoam (normally used
during fermentation to increase tank capacity by
surpressing foam development) to evaluate its gushing
surpressing properties. Though the hop anti-foam tested
very successfully in a model solution and also in wort, when
tested in gushing positive beers the gushing surpressing
activity was not confirmed. The composition of the hop aid
antifoam might explain why it can be effective, since it is a
combination of saturated and unsaturated, long and rather
short fatty acids. The theory is that because hop antifoam
molecules are hydrophobic, they interact with hydrophobins
(proteins made responsible for gushing through the
creation of microbubbles) and therefore inhibit the
development of the gushing inducing microbubbles. Still
many questions are not answered and this project will
continue.

Tunisia: SFBT reports 9.1% rise in turnover due to stronger beer sales
|
Société de fabrication de boissons de Tunisie (SFBT), Tunisia’s leading brewer, reported a 9.1% rise in turnover for 2013, to TND832.8 mln, versus TND763.105 mln in 2012, Business News said on April 17.
The increase was possible due to a 36.2% growth in beer sales, to TND93 mln.
The company said sales of its new canned beer enjoyed a particularly strong demand over the reporting period.

Russia: Carlsberg planning to launch its pricey Jacobsen beer in Russia in a while
|
Carlsberg A/S plans to launch its pricey Jacobsen beer label in Russia within a matter of weeks, a move that could inject momentum into a market that has been under pressure and represents a large portion of the Danish brewer's sales, The Wall Street Journal reported on April 16.
"We will be starting offering Jacobsen in Russia in a few weeks," said Morten Ibsen, the Jacobsen Brewery's brewmaster in Denmark. Jacobsen, which is priced higher than Carlsberg's other brands, is sold in Scandinavia and Israel.
Russian sales of the Jacobsen brand are initially planned for Moscow and St. Petersburg. The company has recently said the crisis in Ukraine hasn't affected its Russian business, where it is the market leader and has multiple brewing facilities.
The launch of Jacobsen, while not expected to provide a big boost to overall revenue in Russia, will provide an indication of Carlsberg's ability to take its product offerings upmarket amid tough economic conditions.
"It is a niche beer, but if sales go well it will go really well," Mr. Ibsen said. He said certain Western products can reach cult status in Russia, and then see high demand even if they are much more expensive than their peers.

Canada: Brick Brewing posts record annual EBITDA in the year to January 31
|
Brick Brewing Co. Limited, the largest Canadian-owned brewery in Ontario, on April 17 released financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended January 31, 2014. Brick posted record annual EBITDA of C$4.6 million on net revenue of C$37.7 million. Note that fiscal 2014 results include the impact of a C$0.7 million correction to Ontario beer tax expense.
"We put up a great result in fiscal 2014. Our team was successful in growing revenues and volumes, especially in our premium Waterloo and Seagram brands. The growth in premium brands coupled with our continued focus on cost reductions allowed us to expand margins, overcome the impact of the beer tax correction and still post record EBITDA," said George Croft, President and CEO at Brick.
In fiscal 2014, Brick increased marketing support for its proprietary brands - Laker, Waterloo and Seagram. The combination of new product introductions, and increased advertising and promotions, including free can-in-case, generated volume growth across the brand portfolio. Laker volume for the year grew by 4.5%, benefitting from the launch of Laker 12 pack bottles earlier in the year.

Tanzania: Serengeti Breweries strikes partnership to produce barley locally
|
A tripartite partnership has been struck between the government, Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) and farmers to produce locally raw materials for beer making, AllAfrica reported on April 18.
Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Leonidas Gama said at a special 'Farmers' Day' discussion convened by SBL on April 17 that cultivation of barley and millet shall be incorporated in districts development plans and assured them of reliable market.
Mr Gama said one of the main problems facing some farmers had been unreliable markets but with SBL's move there is no reason why extensive farming should not be done in the country.
"Barley production now will be incorporated in district development plans and the government will make sure every leader from ward level upwards is involved. Extension officers who were dealing with other crops such as maize and coffee should now engage fully with barley and millet production.
"As for you farmers, this is a golden opportunity before you, so make sure you tap it especially those in Siha district. But also for those in Moshi, Mwanga and Same districts lowlands should turn to millet. You are sure of getting money from millet and barley," said the RC.
