Malt news USA: Colorado Malting Company awarded a $39,000 grant to automate its malting facility
Colorado Malting Company in Alamosa was awarded last week a $39,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to help it come up with a plan to automate its malting facility, West Word reported on April 21.

CMC already runs five malting units 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. But operating them is very labor-intensive, so the grant will help reduce those costs, says Jason Cody, whose family has been growing barley in southwestern Colorado for three generations.

"It would allow us to handle our products more efficiency," he says, adding that the company has applied for another grant as well, and should hear about that one in July.

CMC primarily serves the craft-brewing industry in Colorado - the big brewers like MillerCoors and Anheuser Busch do all of their own malting themselves - but it can't come close to supplying the amount of malt that companies like New Belgium, Ska, Odell and Oskar Blues need on a regular basis for their year-round beers.

So many of the breweries only use CMC malts for special, small-batch projects, taproom specials or one-off beers. But automation could start to change that - and it's just the beginning of CMC's plans over the next ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Heineken unveils the first draught beer in Nigeria
In order to further its influence in the beer market, Heineken, the world’s third-largest beer maker, has unveiled the first draught beer in Nigeria, This Day Live reported on April 21.

The unveiling which took place recently at the Heineken House, Lagos was said to be in line with the brand’s commitment of opening the world of its consumers.

The innovation described as “The David system” was introduced to the media by Franck Evers, Heineken’s global draught master, ambassador and Master Pourer, who does this training for the brand all over the world. The system keeps the beer fresh for upward of 30 days.

The draught master told his audience that the way a beer is served is crucial in keeping its quality thus making the experience of enjoying it more wholesome.

“If you want the beer to taste the way it was intended, he said “it’s all about the 5 Perfect Serve Steps: The beer, which must be extra cold should be poured into an extra cold Heineken glass at 45 degrees slanting; this will achieve a two finger wide foam head. Afterwards, it’s ready to be served."

Senior Brand Manager, Heineken, Mrs. Ngozi Nkwoji said the innovation is a big investment from Heineken ...More info on site

Barley news France: Malting barley markets very calm, prices higher because of lack of precipitations
France’s malting barley markets are very calm. Traders and buyers are waiting for news on the Ukraine crisis, weather, and other factors, before making any offers or commitments, La Depeche reported on April 22.

A certain firmness can be noted for new crop spring barley, which, in turn, provides a boost to the old crop prices. The increase is a consequence of the actual weather conditions, which is judged too dry and could affect the spring plantings, industry sources said.

Barley news UK: Barley exports in February just slightly higher than in January this year
The latest trade data from HMR&C showed the largest drop in UK maize imports for the season, so far, between January and February.

At 172 thousand tonnes in February, UK maize imports were 45% lower than in January.

Wheat imports, at 82 thousand tonnes in February, were 34% lower compared with January and brought the cumulative total for July-February to 1.55 mln tonnes.

Barley exports from the UK, at just under 80 thousand tonnes, were only slightly higher than January's total.

Barley news Ukraine: Almost all spring wheat, barley and oats now in the ground
Almost all Ukrainian spring wheat, barley and oats are now in the ground, with 100%, 96% and 97% of intended area planted as of 18th April, respectively, industry sources reported on April 22.

Maize plantings are ahead of the previous seven seasons' progress with 10% planted to 529 thousand ha. Risks still exist in terms of acquiring fertilisers and other inputs, but with the crop in the ground, the weather is likely to be the key factor for Ukrainian spring crops.

Whisky news Australia: The Scotch Whisky Association takes measures to combat Scotch whisky fakes in Australia
The Scotch whisky trademark has been won by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), which it says will help combat fakes on the market, Foodmagazine reported on April 23.

According to the SWA, Australia has one of the worst markets for fake whisky, with the industry body taking action against the sale of 40 brands in Australia in 2005, The Herald Scotland reports. It places blame on the removal of specific protection of scotch from the country’s Food Standards Code in 2000.

In response, the SWA sought support from the UK government and European Commission, leading to the UK’s Foreign Secretary William Hague drawing attention to the issue in bilateral meetings with the Australian government during his visit to Australia.

For a spirit to be marketed as Scotch whisky, according to SWA guidelines it must have been distilled in Scotland using malted barley, with no other ingredient added except caramel colouring and water.

SWA legal adviser Alan Park said "registration of Scotch whisky as a certification trademark is a major breakthrough and will make it easier to crack down on fakes and therefore protect consumers."

"Scotch whisky exports are of immense value to the economy so overseas protection is vital. We will be monitoring the market ...More info on site
