Brewery news Canada, SK: A special craft brewery coming to Regina this fall
A new craft brewery is coming to Regina this fall and it’s rebelling against traditional breweries in the town, Metronews reported on April 25.

Located at Dewdney Ave. and Rose St, Rebellion Brewing Co. promises to be Regina’s first taproom, according to local man and co-owner Mark Heise.

“We’re not necessarily creating anything new, but it is a little bit different and hasn’t been done in Regina,” said Heise, an internationally renowned home brewer and beer judge.

Unlike traditional bars and pubs, a taproom doesn’t offer a full-service bar but sells non-alcoholic beverages and a limited food menu on top of their own brewed beer and some featured ones. They’re common in the United States and in some Canadian cities like Vancouver.

“The real focus is showcasing our beer … and also on Regina and the local community,” Heise said.

Rebellion Brewing’s beer will be made vegan as they plan to use an organic compound to substitute common clarifiers made of fish bladder. They will also offer gluten-free mead year-round and some other gluten-free beers.

Besides having it on tap, take-home beers won’t be canned and will be served in growlers, which are two litre jugs that could be filled up once patrons come back to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Central Standard Brewing encountering opposition from government and neighbors
Andy Boyd of Walter Morris Cos. in Wichita has been in the real estate business for a decade, but he’s been learning a new side of it lately, Kansas.com reports.

Boyd and Ian Crane have home brewed beer together for a decade. Now, they’re opening Central Standard Brewing in 4,000 square feet in a building they purchased across from Hyde Park not far from the southwest corner of Douglas and Hydraulic, but they’ve faced opposition from some in the neighborhood.

“Dealing with the government and neighbors is tough,” Boyd says. “It’s tough when you’re dealing with emotions.”

When Boyd first talked to the local media about his plans in March, he says he didn’t realize the park would trigger a need for a conditional use permit to allow live music at the business along with more alcohol sales than food sales.

“The park is kind of why we bought the building in the first place, kind of bringing nature into our setting,” he says.

The planning commission had a tied vote over the permit last week, which means it’s denied.

The neighbors oppose not only the live music, but some oppose the business in general.

“If we were to allow that to go in, it would change ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Sherwood Mountain Brewery set to open in late fall
A small craft brewery, a first for Terrace, is set to open for sampling soon with full-scale sales to start in late fall, Terrace Standard reported on April 29.

Sherwood Mountain Brewery, owned by Darryl Tucker and Linda Parker, is located in the former Out Spoke’n Bike & Sport location on Hwy16 West and the pair have spent the last while getting the paperwork and supplies in order to begin production.

Tucker, a former marketing director with Hawkair and who was also involved with the local effort to purchase Shames Mountain and convert it into a co-op, said the move offers him a chance to combine two loves – beer and promotions.

“I really enjoy beer, it was something I could sell and love, and to learn a new skill and become a brewmaster, so to speak, it was like, this all fit,” he said last week.

Tucker’s first stop in the brewery world was with the Skeena Brewing Company, a local group planning to open a brewpub on one corner of the city-owned former Co-op property. But he then decided on a separate venture, a move that took him to a brewing school in Berlin, Germany for six months to become a certified ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Drekker Brewing chooses downtown Fargo as location for brewery and taproom
The newly announced Drekker Brewing Co. has chosen a location for its brewery and taproom. The company will be setting up operations in the Cityscapes Plaza Building at 630 1st Avenue North in downtown Fargo, Prairie Business reported on April 25.

“We couldn’t be more excited about our location. We’re planning some really fun things for the brewery and taproom, all within the heart of downtown Fargo,” explains Mark Bjornstad, Co-founder and President of Drekker Brewing.

Customers will be able to enjoy flights and pints at the taproom, take a tour of the brewery, and bring home growlers of their favorite brews. Head brewer, Darin Montplaisir, explains taprooms are a growing trend in craft brewing and offer a unique customer experience.

“People will be able to hang out and enjoy the freshest beer possible, see how it’s made and talk to the people who crafted it while taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the brewery,” said Montplaisir.

Construction on the brewery will begin this spring, with a grand opening planned for the fall of 2014. Drekker will be brewing on a 10-barrel brewhouse custom made for the company by Bennett Forgeworks in Colorado. The beer will be fermented and conditioned in American-made ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Nine-Band Brewing Company preparing for opening this summer
Keith Ashley and Jack Sparks want to put Allen, Texas, on the craft beer map, Dallas News reported on April 25.

When it opens this summer, their Nine-Band Brewing Company will become the city’s first brewery. They broke ground on the 8,100-square-foot showroom and brewery in March.

Though Nine-Band is a new label, Ashley, the owner, and Sparks, the brewmaster, have experience in the business.

Ashley, who lives in Lucas, is a former financial partner in Franconia Brewing Company in McKinney.

“That’s when I really started learning the beer business,” he said. “I’m an entrepreneur at heart.”

Sparks, a graduate of Allen High School, first became interested in homebrewing as a student at Pennsylvania State University. He moved back to the Dallas area in the early ’90s and got a job bartending at Hubcap Brewery, which has since closed.

He said he became friends with the brewers there, and they eventually started training him.

“They looked like they were always happy,” Sparks said. “They explained to me that they were never going to get rich, but they liked their job. I said, ‘You know what, that sounds like a good deal to me.’”

Sparks has gone on to win awards for his brews, including a silver medal in ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Malting barley value unchanged in CWB’s April Pool Return Outlooks (PROs) for the 2014-15 pools
CWB on April 24 released its Pool Return Outlooks (PROs) for the 2014-15 pools and Futures Choice pools. Compared to the last PRO release on March 27, projected wheat returns are C$8 to C$9 per tonne lower. Projected returns for durum, canola, malting barley and field peas remain unchanged.

Select two-row malting barley PRO value is set at C$280/tonne.

International barley prices have remained stable since the last PRO release as a result of continued demand by China for malting barley and the decline in world barley seeded acres.

Offsetting these factors is the recent rains last week in Australia, which helped improve soil moisture levels, CWB said.

Barley news USA, MI: Michigan State University Extension to explore agronomic potential of growing malting barley in the state
Due to the increasing demand for locally-sourced products in everything from salads to beer, barley, produced for malt, is being revisited as a potential crop for Michigan agriculture, Michigan State University reported on April 28. In the quest for an all-Michigan beer, craft brewers in the state are constantly challenged with acquiring quality malt that has been processed in-state with Michigan-grown barley. Barley acres are quite limited in the state, and what is grown is marketed as livestock feed. Furthermore, very few malting operations, or malt houses, exist in the state. Historically, Michigan produced upwards of 300,000 acres of barley (whereas only 8,000 acres were harvested in 2013), and multiple malt houses and brewing operations provided opportunity for in-state malt production. That infrastructure has since disappeared, but the hope still remains.

Michigan State University Extension, in partnership with Michigan State University AgBioResearch, was recently awarded a grant to explore the agronomic potential of barley and the feasibility of processing that barley for malt in northern Michigan. These funds, awarded through the MSU Project GREEEN grant program, will allow for variety testing at four sites through the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula to identify which varieties are most productive, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC & USA, OR: Vancouver’s Mt Tabor Brewing to open production in Portland
Mt Tabor Brewing plans to open a new production facility and tasting room in Portland, while maintaining its brewpub in Vancouver, Vancouver Business Journal reported on April 28.

Owner/brewer Eric Surface said he has signed a lease to occupy a 6,000-square-foot space at 124 SE 11th Avenue in Portland. The new facility, he said, includes space for a barrel aging room and three or four 15-barrel fermenters.

"We are all really excited for the next phase and look forward to having a great time as we get things up and running at Tabor 2," the brewery said on its Facebook page. "It's a team effort and we couldn't do it without having great friends like you who join us on Thursday and Friday nights."

Mt Tabor Brewing is located at 113 W 9Th St. in Vancouver.

Brewery news USA, OR & NV: Ninkasi Brewing signs agreements to expand distribution throughout Nevada
Ninkasi Brewing will expand distribution throughout Nevada beginning next month, per new agreements with five distributorships in the state, Brewbound reported on April 28.

The brewery, which is based in Eugene, Ore., has tapped Blach Distributing Co., Capital Beverages, Nevada Beverage Company, Morrey Distributing Co., and Valley Distributors to stock the state’s shelves and tap lines with its lineup of 12 and 22 oz. bottles, draft beers and limited releases.

“We are excited to be entering Nevada,” said Nikos Ride, CEO and co-founder of Ninkasi, in a press release. “With a growing and thriving craft beer scene, we feel there are great opportunities in the state now and into the future.”

Earlier this month, the brewery announced it was officially operational in its second facility, tacking on 70,000 barrels to its capacity. The new brewery gives Ninkasi the ability to grow to a 250,000-barrel per year brewery.

Nevada will be the brewery’s seventh market. Its current distribution footprint includes its home state of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and Vancouver, B.C.

Brewery news USA, MO: Cape Girardeau to welcome Minglewood Brewery soon
Craft brewing has grown in popularity over the years, and Stewart Matthews and Jeffrey Lage intend to take advantage of the untapped market in Cape Girardeau, Southeast Missourian reported on April 28.

The duo plans to open Minglewood Brewery, a microbrewery and pub, in the old Keys building at the corner of Broadway and Spanish Street by late this summer.

Though neither Matthews nor Lage has brewing experience, they recently hired Tony Johnson, assistant brewer at Big Muddy Brewing in Murphysboro, Ill., as the brewpub's head brewer.

Johnson will take command of brewing about four or five "staple" beers the pub will have on tap year-round, such as an English-style pale ale, Belgium, IPA and stout beer.

The rest of the 12-tap system will be filled with "interesting, unique beers that are a little crazy," Matthews said, all of which will be brewed in-house using a seven-barrel brewing system.

The business will double as a restaurant that will serve artisan pizzas, open-faced sandwiches and appetizers, including Bavarian pretzels, bruschetta and cheese platters. Though they are "here for the beer," wine and spirits also will be available, along with high chairs and a children's menu for the little ones.

Brewery news Rwanda: Bralirwa’s pretax profit down 14.2% in 2013 on weak economy
Rwandan brewer Bralirwa's pretax profit fell 14.2 percent last year to 21.3 billion Rwandan francs ($31.2 million) due to the country's economic downturn and higher taxes on beer to its main export market, Democratic Republic of Congo, Reuters reported on April 28.

The company, 75 percent-owned by Heineken, said it was concerned by the tax regime in Congo, but was cautiously optimistic about the outlook for 2014, which was "encouraging".

Rwanda's growth rate fell to 4.6 percent in 2013, after averaging 8.2 percent from 2006 to 2012, because of aid cuts imposed after it was accused of playing a role in a rebellion in eastern Congo, a charge the country has denied.

"GDP is a measure that the government and companies watch very carefully as to the health of the economy. It's also a measure for us of disposable cash in people's pockets," Bralirwa managing director Jonathan Hall told reporters on April 28.

Bralirwa is Rwanda's oldest brewery with rights to produce brands including Amstel. Production of Guinness ceased in 2013 after the franchise was terminated. It also produces branded soft drinks such as Coca-Cola.

Exports fell by 29 percent, largely due to increased duties charged by Congo, its biggest export market, but it vowed ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Three China Resources Enterprise top managers detained in anti-corruption campaign
The most aggressive “anti-corruption” campaign in China in recent years has scored three high-profile casualties at SABMiller’s joint venture partner in that country, Business Day reported on April 28.

Until he was detained last week, Song Lin was chairman of state-owned China Resources Holding, whose listed conglomerate China Resources Enterprise (CRE) has joint control with SABMiller of CR Snow, which is the largest beer group in China.

Song’s detention was followed in a few days by that of the chief executive of China Resources Capital and of an executive director of China Resources Land. A fourth executive, the chairman of China Resources Pharmaceuticals, is reported to be in the US with his family.

So far, CRE has not been directly affected by the campaign, but a source quoted in Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post remarked that the China Resources investigation had been widened.

A spokesman for SABMiller said the group would not comment, and referred to a statement issued by CRE that the investigation of Song would not cause a material adverse impact on the business or operations of CRE.

SABMiller said in a statement on April 28: "As things stand, this investigation has nothing to do with SABMiller or our CRSB joint venture."

Brewery news China: Sales of Tuborg beer going extremely well
Carlsberg’s decision to launch its beer Tuborg in China is looking like a wise decision after Tuborg's sales figures shot up during its second year on the Chinese market, The Copenhagen Post reported on April 28.

The brewery giant now sells five times as much Tuborg in China than it did during its first year on the market and further gains are expected to be made in future years.

“We think that it’s going to keep expanding quickly and strongly,” Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen, the head of Carlsberg, said according to Ritzau news service.

“We expect that we can double the volume every year – for at least the next couple of years.”

Rasmussen went on to say that Tuborg had already established itself among the leading international beer brands on the Chinese market, and it was complimented earlier this week at the China Beer Industry Annual Summit where it was voted the fastest growing beer in the nation.

“It’s been a fantastic success, but one that we had expected,” Rasmussen said.

“Because as always, when we launch one of our international or local brands, we naturally do a lot of preparatory work concerning customer insight,”

Carlsberg did not wish to reveal the volume figures of its individual ...More info on site

Brewery news Finland: Carlsberg found guilty of tax evasion
The Danish brewery giant Carlsberg has been found guilty of tax evasion amounting to 317 million kroner in Finland, according to Børsen business newspaper.

On top of a 276 million kroner tax fine, a court in Helsinki fined the brewery 41 million kroner for failing to pay proper taxes between the years 2006 and 2010 via its subsidiary Sinebrychoff.

According to reports, Carlsberg set up a special framework in Finland to avoid paying taxes.

“In the period between 2006 and 2010 we withheld an amount that we believed we paid too much in tax,” Jens Bekke, Carlsberg’s head of communication, was quoted by the Ritzau news agency.

“In 2010 we paid the tax in arrears, interest for the period and a smaller fine. Since then we have paid tax as normal.”

Carlsberg assumed control of Sinebrychoff back in 1999, but the tax evasion didn’t begin until 2006, the court found.

The Finish authorities have decided that Carlsberg should continue to pay tax according to the current regulations – a decision that the brewery is considering appealing against.

“Over the next 14 days, we will decide whether we will appeal against the case and continue it,” Bekke said.

“If we win, we will receive that amount in overpaid tax.”

Brewery news UK: Molson Coors pauses production at its microbrewery in Burton
Bosses at a Burton brewing giant have been forced to halt production at its £1 million microbrewery in the town as part of a bid to improve working conditions for staff, Burton Mail reported on April 29.

Brewing at the Molson Coors-owned William Worthington Brewery, based at the National Brewery Centre, in Horninglow Street, has been ‘temporarily paused’ while senior figures from the company work on a raft of improvements at the site.

A major review is now taking place to look at how machinery can be ‘reconfigured to make brewing, cleaning and maintenance easier’ at the brewery which opened in a blaze of glory in 2010 as the firm’s response to the burgeoning demand for cask ales.

The firm also said the process was allowing them to look at several options to ‘improve safety’ for all workers at the brewery, but were quick to stress that the site was not set to close permanently.

A spokesman for Molson Coors said: “Brewing at the William Worthington brewery has been temporarily paused.

“The on-site brewing team will be working alongside Stuart Howe, head of craft brewing and innovation, to review how brewing vessels and pipework can be reconfigured to make brewing, cleaning and maintenance easier.

Brewery news Australia: Carlton & United Breweries admits misleading labelling on one of its beers
Carlton & United Breweries has entered into a court enforceable undertaking with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, after the beer giant admitted its labelling of Byron Bay Pale Lager may have been misleading, Smart Company reported on April 29.

The brewer has also copped A$20,000 in infringement fines in relation to the case, which rested on ACCC concerns that CUB was misleading consumers by portraying itself as a small business.

CUB has been supplying Byron Bay Pale Lager nationwide since 2013 through a license from the Byron Bay Brewing Company, which brews and sells the beer at its location in Byron Bay.

The beer sold by CUB featured the name ‘Byron Bay Pale Lager’, an image of a lighthouse and a map of the Byron Bay area, as well as information about the town.

However, CUB brews the beer in Warnervale, 95km north of Sydney and about 630km from Byron Bay. The ACCC was concerned the beer was presented as being brewed by a small brewer in Byron Bay.

The ACCC said in a statement on April 29 that CUB has agreed to stop distributing the products with the labels in question and, more generally, has agreed to not make false or misleading representations ...More info on site
