China: AB InBev’s position in northwest China strengthened by recent acquisition
|
Northeastern China is a land of shuttered factories and gritty cities that's often compared to America's Rust Belt, The Street reported on May 6.
It's also a land of enthusiastic beer drinkers in a country where beer consumption is growing fast -- jumping 4.6% last year from 2012 to a world-leading 49 billion litres, according to China's official industry data. China is become a competitive focal point for the globe's biggest breweries.
And the center of this focal point for Anheuser-Busch InBev, SABMiller, Japan's Asahi and other beer giants is depressed, rusting northeastern China.
The competition intensified last month when InBev bought Ginsber, a brewery with a capacity of about 500 million litres a year that's based in the northeastern city of Jilin.
Ginsber's rival brands include SABMiller-affiliated beer named Snow, Asahi-invested Tsingtao and Chinese state-owned Yanjing. Upscale beers also available on area supermarket shelves include Denmark's Carlsberg and Holland's Heineken.
InBev did not disclose terms of the deal with Ginsber's seller Hongzui Group, a Communist Party-led enterprise based in the city of Siping that also makes chemicals, building materials and soybean oil.

USA: Molson Coors doing whatever it can to keep up with rising demand for craft beer

Molson Coors Brewing has a problem, and it's a crafty one.
The premium light beer that has been the mainstay of the company for generations continues to be one of the world's most popular brands, but there are signs of trouble, The Denver Post reported on May 6.
Light beer sales have been flat or declining. Consumer surveys suggest people have grown tired of the taste. And the more expensive craft-beer market has been growing larger every year.
In a recent interview with The Denver Post, Pete coors, the 67-year-old chairman of Molson Coors, said his company is doing whatever it can to keep up.
"Basically the biggest trouble we have is on-premise sales," Coors said. "We have a lot of bar owners who are enamored with craft beers. They are beginning to take off the premium light handles and putting bottles behind the bar instead and replacing the handles with craft beer handles. We lose 50 percent of our volume when that happens."
Coors has compelling reasons for bar owners to keep its beers on tap.
"Having a premium light brand — whether it's Coors, Miller or Bud — on tap actually improves the economics of their business," he said. "People stay in their seats

Pakistan: Murree Brewery enjoys revenues and profits increase amid struggling economy
|
Murree Brewery, the 153-year-old producer of beer and spirits, was established by the British and continues in what is today Pakistan. It survived partition and the creation of Pakistan as a Muslim-majority nation. It kept brewing during the sweeping Islamization efforts of the late 70s and 80s, when access to alcohol was restricted to the tiny non-Muslim minority. It has also weathered the doldrums of Pakistan’s economy, and is one of the most successful businesses in the country, The Wall Street Journal reported on May 4.
While Pakistan’s economy struggles to grow, Murree Brewery’s revenues and profits in the third quarter are up sharply, following a record-breaking year in 2013, according to the company’s financial reports.
The brewery is meticulous about its accounts, partly because it is acutely aware of its position in a country where alcohol is illegal for the majority of the population.
“We don’t give anyone a cause of pointing a finger at us,” says Major Sabihur Rehman, special assistant to the brewery’s chief executive, Isphanyar Bhandara. That extends from ensuring the company’s finances are perfectly maintained to the treatment of the employees, who belong to one of the country’s most active labor unions.

Japan & Canada: Japanese brewers count on malting barley from Canada

Japanese brewers love Canadian malting barley.
They want to keep it that way, but the malt’s got to keep getting better, The Western Producer reported on May 2.
“We need varieties with distinctive value, brand and positioning.… We can make it through good co-operation,” Kensuke Ogushi, beer ingredients director with Sapporo Breweries, told the Canadian Global Crops Symposium.
“Let us continue (to) work together in the future.”
Canada has been Japan’s biggest supplier of malting barley for the past 10 years, edging out Australia and European suppliers.
The Japanese are steady beer consumers and wealthy, premium-paying drinkers, make it a much-valued market in the eyes of barley marketers.
Sapporo is Japan’s oldest brewery and has been directly involved in developing its own varieties since its birth in the 1870s.
It continues to be involved in development, helping create new varieties in Canada, Australia and Europe that meet its needs for specific malt characteristics.
It’s why Ogushi thinks Canada can remain a key supplier.

UK: Scottish growers may be forced away from growing malting barley by new three-crop rule
|
Scottish growers would be forced away from growing established crops such as malting barley under the three-crop rule, NFU Scotland has warned.
Instead of being market-focused in the crops they grow, they would have to plant other crops simply to secure the “greening” element of support available under the common agricultural policy (CAP), Farmers’ Weekly reported on May 6.
NFU Scotland claimed that the policy was “nonsensical” in Scotland’s point of view and it has backed DEFRA’s plans for a review of the crop diversification element of the new CAP reform requirements.
Following a meeting with DEFRA secretary Owen Paterson in Edinburgh last week, the union has prepared a briefing on the three-crop rule – which will require most arable growers to grow three different crops from 2015 onwards.
It has submitted it to the minister to support his effort for the greening measure to be reviewed at European level.
“A primary reason for the three crop rule’s inclusion in the greening requirements of the reform package was as a means of combating monoculture – an issue in some regions of the EU – but certainly not Scotland,” said NFUS president Nigel Miller.
