USA, WA: New Wild Earth Brewing Company in Roslyn offers local Belgian-style craft beers
|
A new brewery in Roslyn is offering people a local option for Belgian-style American craft beer.
Wild Earth Brewing Company opened on Super Bowl Sunday, and owner and brewer David Kilgour served his first brew in April, The Daily Record reported on May 15.
The brewing company produces small batches of beer for the taproom and limited distribution of bottles, kegs and growlers.
“We’re more focused on variety over quantity of beer,” brewer and owner David Kilgour said.
People can stop in and drink a pint on site, fill a growler, or buy some bottles to take with them. It’s a local experience, and the beer is made on site.
“Have a pint from the brewer right where it’s made,” Kilgour said.
Kilgour earned a liberal arts business degree, and spent the last eight years learning the craft of brewing in breweries in New Hampshire, Maine, New York and Washington.
Kilgour said it was always a goal to marry the production of beer with his business degree.
“I just really liked the process, and got my foot in the door over in Maine,” he said. “I continued looking for brewing jobs, working in different places from a production brewery to a small brew pub.”

Canada, ON: MacKinnon Brothers Brewing launched in Bath, Ontario
|
The small community of Bath in Loyalist Township west of Kingston is home to Ontario’s newest craft brewery, with the opening this week of MacKinnon Brothers Brewing, Canadian Beer News reported on May 14.
The brewery was founded by brothers Ivan and Dan MacKinnon and their cousin Ben Vandenberg on farmland that has been in their family since 1784.
While it will be another month or two before the brewery tasting room and retail store is complete and ready to receive customers, MacKinnon Brothers will be debuting its flagship Crosscut Canadian Ale brand at Next Gen Sociable, a beer and whisky tasting event to raise funds for the United Way that takes place on Saturday May 18th at Four Points by Sheraton Kingston.
Future brands from the brewery will include Lauchlin, a British/Scottish style ale, and Origin, a wheat beer.

USA, OH & MI: Michigan’s Saugatuck Brewing Co. to start supplying its production in northern Ohio
|
Saugatuck Brewing Co., an award-winning brewery in Michigan, is moving into northern Ohio next week. The production brewery and brewpub has inked deals with Beverage Distributors in Cleveland and Treu House of Munch in Toledo, Ohio.com reported on May 15.
“We’re very excited about coming into, particularly, the Cleveland/Akron market,” said Kerry O’Donohue, brewery vice president. “Having looked into it as far as craft beer studies and demographics go, I hadn’t realized what a strong craft beer city or craft beer market that Cleveland/Akron is. We are very pumped up about coming into the market.”
Saugatuck, which opened in 2005, has expanded its brewhouse from a 10-barrel system to a 40-barrel system. That upgrade will allow the brewery to add Ohio and Minnesota, and produce an estimated 8,000 barrels this year.
“We’re growing like most microbreweries these days,” O’Donohue said. “We’re looking to go into additional states.”
The brewery is bringing both bottles and draft to Ohio, including its Bonfire Brown Ale, which won a gold medal at the recent World Beer Cup.
Other brands coming are: Neapolitan Milk Stout, Singapore IPA, Oval Beach Blonde, Hop in Yer Rye and Hop on a Blonde.

USA, NY: Druthers Brewing Co. acquires 23,000-square-foot building for new brewing facility in Albany
|
Druthers Brewing Co. has finalized its acquisition of a 23,000-square-foot building at 1053 Broadway, on the northern end of Albany’s warehouse district. Significant renovation work needs to be done to turn the structure, which had been home to a plumbing-supply company, into a brewing facility and restaurant focused on wood-fired pizza, Timesunion.com reported on May 15.
George de Piro, Druthers’ chief brewer, said brewing equipment has been ordered for a Nov. 1 delivery, which makes a January opening ”realistic.”
The brewing system has a capacity of 30 beer barrels, or more than 900 gallons, triple the size of Druthers’ original location, in Saratoga Springs. De Piro says, “The brewing system will be capable of supporting demand at the new brewpub while also selling a significant volume of beer off premises.”
The location is expected to support 50 full- and part-time jobs.

USA, ID: Idaho’s barley crop planting a bit ahead of schedule
|
Planting of Idaho’s barley crop is a bit ahead of schedule, and growers are pleased by their early growth, said Idaho Barley Commission Administrator Kelly Olson.
According to a May 11 crop progress report issued by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Idaho’s barley crop is 90 percent planted, well ahead of the five-year average for the date of 81 percent.
“What’s left to plant is the typical high-elevation areas where (growers) have to wait for the soils to warm up,” Olson said.
Olson said some cold nights are in the forecast for Eastern Idaho, but the crop has fared well and “the outlook is very favorable.”
NASS estimated 1 percent of Idaho’s barley crop is in poor condition, 26 percent is in fair condition, 59 percent is in good condition and 14 percent is in excellent condition.

USA, WI: Badger State Brewing set to expand production capacity
|
Badger State Brewing located in Green Bay, Wisconsin is set to expand its production capacity, in a move to meet the increasing consumer demand for its beer, Drinks Business Review reported on May 15.
The company has commenced the 20,000ft² expansion project near to its existing brewing operations.
The project's initial phase will include a taproom, event space and new brewing equipment, which will enable the company to produce 2,500 barrels of beer annually, as well as allow for state-wide distribution.
During the subsequent phases, the company will add new packaging equipment and an outdoor beer garden.
The expansion is expected to be completed in summer 2014.
Badger State Brewing president Andrew Fabry said, "Operating and growing our business in the city we grew up in has been a tremendously rewarding experience. The community support has been incredible since day one, and we could not be more thankful."

USA, NV & CA & OR: Reno-based Great Basin Brewing Co. expanding distribution to other states
|
Reno-based Great Basin Brewing Co. is taking some of their flagship beers on the road, thanks to some big upgrades, ktvn.com reported on May 14.
Last year, the locally-owned company installed a new bottling system. Now they are churning out ten 6-packs every minute.
They are also the home to the silver state's three largest fermentation tanks.
That extra muscle has made it possible to send some local favorites, like "Icky," over the state line.
Great Basin says they are now equipped to ship more than 5 million bottles every year, to stores and restaurants in California and Oregon.
The company's beers are already available at more than 400 venues across Nevada.
Great Basin owner and brew-master Tom Young calls the new expansion part of his "lifelong dream."

The town of Murrieta will finally have a production brewery to call its own. Electric Brewing Company located on 41537 Cherry St will open its doors on Saturday May 17, 2014 at 11:00am, Brewbound reported on May 15.
The Electric Brewing Company is a small-batch, electric-fired, craft brewery dedicated to the production of fine, hand-crafted ales and lagers.
Beers on tap will include: Cali Steamin’, a California Common; Red Wheat Hefeweizen; Incredulous, an Imperial Red Ale; and the Citra Pale Ale, an American Pale Ale.

South Africa: SABMiller working with pub owners to get more female drinkers

To get women to drink more at her pub, Susan Mathane is starting in the toilet.
The South African entrepreneur is working with SABMiller to give her bar - Susan’s Place in Tembisa - a facelift.
Last year she added niceties including extra couches, drinking glasses, a thatched roof and a pristine ladies toilet - moves meant to transform her tavern into a place women would want to drop in and stay awhile.
Despite controlling about 90 percent of the South African market, where it first sold beer to thirsty miners more than a century ago, the world’s second-largest brewer struggled to grow last year amid rising inflation and increased competition from Heineken and Diageo, BusinessReport communicated on May 16.
So it’s working with 6,000 pub owners like Mathane, giving advice and sometimes funds to improve bars from the informal shebeens of apartheid to legal, safe taverns - that happen to serve mostly SABMiller beer.
The brewer gets much of its revenue from emerging markets, making it both vulnerable to economic busts and well-placed to benefit from the booms.
In South Africa, a weakening rand and an unemployment rate hovering around 25 percent led the company to narrow its profit forecast in March.

Australia: Hop Products Australia reports crop 2014 results
|
For Hop Products Australia’s crop 2014 the area harvested was 408 hectares, a decrease of 41 hectares from crop 2013, the company reported in April.
This decrease is reflective of the scheduled replanting program, with approximately 20% of HPA production area replanted with new flavour varieties during the spring and early summer.
With a challenging growing season behind us the yields by variety were quite variable. In some cases varieties yielded well beyond expectation, however the season proved more challenging for some and despite lots of cones being present the cone weight of some varieties fell well short of long term averages.
Overall, the area harvested yielded 1,079 MT which is a relatively small decrease in overall yield. The reduction in the number of hectares harvested was compensated by a modest increase in the average yield of hops / hectare.
All in all the harvest result was in line with budgeted expectations, enabling HAP to meet all contracted commitments and still hold a modest long position of most varieties.
