Do you know the metal levels of your raw materials?
ABSTRACT
If you don't, it may be worthwhile to take a closer look
as these German researchers did. They measured the
content of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and
zinc throughout the whole brewing process. In a
comparison with malt and yeast, hops contained
more calcium and iron. 96% of all metal ions were
malt derived, where as hops contributed 2.8%, yeast
1% and 0.2% by water. They found that during the
brewing process the highest amount of metal ions
were discharged with the spent grain. Of the total
intake only 0.1% of iron, 0.4% of zinc, 3.1% of
copper, 6.3% of calcium and 15.1% of magnesium
made it into the final beer. Read more

Kenya: Kenya ranked low in alcohol consumption despite being largest beer market in the region
|
Kenya is ranked at the bottom compared to neighbouring Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Burundi and Uganda in alcohol consumption despite being the largest beer market in the region, Standard Digital reported on May 18.
Kenya is also one of the lowest informal beer markets in Africa, at 20 per cent, compared to 89 per cent in Uganda, 87 per cent in Tanzania and 17 per cent in South Africa.
According to figures released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a report titled Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2014, only 23.1 per cent of Kenya’s population drinks alcohol. This is compared to Rwanda where 44.7 per cent of the adult population take alcohol, 41.8 per cent in Tanzania, 41.1 per cent in Burundi and 41 per cent in Uganda.
While Kenya has a lower alcohol-consuming population in the region, it has the largest number of beer consumers at 56 per cent of all alcoholic beverages consumed.
Analysis by Standard Investment Bank estimates that in Burundi, only 25 per cent of those taking alcoholic beverages drink beer.
This is compared to 50 per cent in Ethiopia, 11 per cent in Rwanda, 9 per cent in Uganda and 11 per cent in Tanzania. Kenya’s alcohol consumption

UK: Mexican Corona beer may be in shortage over the next several months
|
Molson Coors, exclusive UK distributor of the AB InBev-owned Corona brand, has warned retailers that orders it placed for the Mexican beer in the first quarter of this year would not be delivered to schedule, The Grocer reported on May 18.
“This is expected to lead to a shortage of stock in the UK,” Molson Coors said this week, adding that “to minimise the impact on our customers and consumers, we have taken the decision to proactively manage Corona stock until further notice.”
Some experts think the lack of stock on Corona, a £60 mln-sales brand in the UK that’s imported from Mexico, has been caused by increased demand ahead of the World Cup.
But other industry insiders claim AB InBev’s brewery in Mexico has been suffering a shortage of bottles and it was not known when this would be resolved. AB InBev said it would work closely with Molson Coors to manage stock and minimise disruption. “We are working hard towards a solution,” it added.
Neither brewer would say what direct impact the shortage was likely to have on retailers, although a senior buyer at one of the big four said he did not expect to run out altogether.

UK: Britain is fast developing a taste for Polish lager
|
Britain is fast developing a taste for Polish lager thanks to the influx of workers from Eastern Europe, new industry figures reveal.
The extra strong Tyskie brand is now so popular in the UK it has made the top ten ‘World Beers’ table alongside better known brands like Heineken and Kronenbourg.
The list records the best selling foreign beers and lagers sold in shops, supermarkets and off licences across the UK, outside the mass market brewers like Carling and Stella.
But while the other brands have built up a strong following in Britain over decades, Tyskie is a relative newcomer thanks to the wave of Polish immigrants in recent years.
In Poland, it accounts for one in five of all beer sales and at 5.6 per cent is stronger than most other lagers sold over here which are often too weak for Eastern European tastes.
Now it is owned by multinational brewing giant SAB Miller which also has Peroni, Grolsch and several other foreign beers.
Miller Brands sales director Tim Clay said: 'Retailers should aim to have a selection of world beers available alongside their mainstream and everyday premium lager to encourage consumers to trade up.'
Sales of so-called World Beers are soaring in the UK

India: United Breweries delays announcement of fourth-quarter results pending court ruling on its sale of United Spirits
|
United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd (UBHL) said it would delay the announcement of its fourth-quarter results, pending a Supreme Court ruling on its sale of United Spirits Ltd. (USL) shares worth at least Rs1,400 crore to Diageo Plc, Livemint reported on May 19.
UBHL, the holding company of Vijay Mallya’s troubled UB Group, said in a statement to BSE that it would publish its fourth-quarter results within a month after the Supreme Court passes judgement on the Diageo stake sale case.
UBHL filed an appeal with the Supreme Court in January against a Karnataka high court order that annulled the sale of USL shares.
The high court, which passed its verdict on 20 December, reversed an order passed by the same court in May when it gave conditional approval to UBHL to sell its shares to Diageo.
The December order came in response to a winding-up petition filed by creditors of UBHL, which, according to the company’s latest annual report, has extended corporate guarantees worth thousands of crores to lenders of troubled group affiliate Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. Proceedings related to the winding-up petition will continue in the high court.
Diageo completed its takeover of USL last July, nearly eight months after the companies announced the deal.

USA: Movement of barley off farm still slow
|
Steady market prices and not much barley moving to markets – these are things Marvin Zutz, Minnesota Barley Growers Association executive director, has grown accustomed to expect in recent months. But the USDA planting intentions report that was issued at the end of March was surprising to him, The Prairie Star reported on May 17.
“I was fairly impressed with the numbers that came out, both for Minnesota and North Dakota,” Zutz said, referring to the planned number of barley acres. “The numbers were stronger than what I was led to believe going into that report. But they may come in a little lower now with the late spring we are having.”
Minnesota growers actually indicated they were going to plant 11 percent more barley in 2014, with 100,000 planned. Meanwhile across the border, North Dakota producers were expecting to plant 650,000 acres, a decrease of 14 percent.
Canadians are also looking at lower barley acres. Statistics Canada is expecting 6.3 million acres of barley will be planted this year, down from 7.08 million last year and 7.4 million in 2012. Only a decade ago, Canadian farmers seeded nearly 11 million acres of barley.
