The good, the bad and the ugly
ABSTRACT
It has long been thought since Tressl proposed it in
1978 that the cleavage of the acyl side chains of hop
alpha or beta acids results in a loss of bitterness and
may result in the formation of flavour active short
chain acids often resulting in rancid and cheesy off
flavours. The German researchers in this study found
that it might not be as bad as once claimed. They
confirmed that with warm aerobic storage, bitter acid
concentration decreases along with increases in the
concentrations of 2-methylpropanoic acid, and 2- &
3-methylbutanoic acids. However, with short term
cold aerobic storage (4 weeks at 0 C), the aroma
properties of hops may actually be positively
influenced.

Australia: Craft beer industry growth hampered by exclusive tap contracts
|
It was November 2013, in the lead-up to the festive season - a crucial trading period for Australia's 7000 pubs, clubs and bars.
Sitting down to his computer, a Melbourne publican discovered an email waiting for him. Sent by an executive from Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), it contained an offer that left him gobsmacked.
One of CUB's specialty brews had been ''selling very well'' in other pubs, the email explained. It then suggested the publican sell that brew on tap - at the expense of a specific competing craft beer that the publican was already offering. ''I'll donate the first keg,'' the CUB executive offered.
The email suggested the beer be served in glasses smaller than a schooner, but that they be priced the same as a schooner.
''And that gives you … an extra A$50 per keg to the hotel,'' the executive wrote.
Fortunately for the craft brewer, the publican thought the proposal was underhanded and rejected it. ''Can you believe this rubbish? Those guys [CUB] are really coming after you,'' he told one of the sales representatives of the craft brewer.

UK: Carlsberg to create new “crafted” portfolio of 28 beers
|
Carlsberg has chosen 28 beers to create a new “crafted” portfolio, aimed at its freetrade customers who want to expand their beer offer, The Morning Advertiser reported on June 2.
The brewer says year-on-year growth for craft beer in the UK is up 75% and the average pint of craft beer can be up to 90p a pint more expensive (both CGA Brand Index).
Beer writer Pete Brown authored the introduction to a guide to the portfolio, and said: “Despite its relatively small market share, four out of 10 publicans already think they should be stocking craft. That’s because it attracts a much broader set of drinkers than usually drink beer.
“These drinkers believe craft beer gives them a special experience that is worth paying more for. And that means a pub, bar or restaurant that still doesn’t offer craft beer is one that’s missing an obvious opportunity.”
The beers come from a number of breweries across the globe, including some of Carlsberg’s own such as the Swedish Backyard Brewery.
London-based Portobello Brewing Company, the American Stevens Point Brewery and Abbey brewery Grimbergen are also on the list, alongside more recognisable names such as Liefmans, Innis & Gunn, Greene King and Marston’s.

Zimbabwe: Delta Holdings reports phenomenal growth in new line of products
|
Zimbabwe Stock Exchange blue chip Delta Holdings says it has experienced a phenomenal growth in its new line of beverages, BizDay reported on June 2.
Matts Valela, Delta’s Finance Director, said the introduction of “Mahewu” – which he called “the new kid on the block” – had exceeded expectations realizing Z$15 million in sales last year.
Mahewu is a non-alcoholic traditional sorghum drink, which Delta introduced following its success in neighbouring Zambia.
In the joint address – which Valela made with the group’s Operations Director Etherton Mpisaunga – the beverages’ giant said its new “Chibuku Super” sorghum beer had also been extremely well-received by the market and had contributed much to the group’s revenue.
Delta is the market leader in beverages in Zimbabwe, accounting for 98% of all lager beer sales, 98% of soft drinks and 84% sorghum beer sales, according to an independent survey.
Valela said the company, which also owns 31% of Zimbabwean spirit manufacturer Afdis, was encouraged by the rise in volume sales of ciders. He told delegates to the Imara Investing in Africa conference that Afdis would soon embark on the local production of previously imported ciders.

Belgium & USA: Chimay Première now available in draft in select markets

The Trappist monks at Scourmont Abbey in Chimay, Belgium have been brewing Première since 1862. This announcement marks an important milestone for Chimay and the Trappist category in the U.S., as, along with the Chimay Cinq Cents, Première now joins the ranks of only a handful of Trappist beers available on draft in the USA.

Certified Trappist breweries must strictly adhere to rules set out by the International Trappist Association, the governing body that oversees and protects the Trappist trademark. Australia: Just launched Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc expected to attract beer, cider and wine drinkers
|
Coopers Premium Beverages has launched Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, a fruity wheat beer the brewer believes will attract not just beer drinkers, but also consumers of cider and wine, The Shout reported on June 2.
The five per cent ABV beer complements the existing Kronenbourg 1664 lager, which along with Carlsberg has been distributed by Premium Beverages for almost two years.
Already available in 32 other countries globally, Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc has hints of spiced orange and coriander and is packaged in a unique blue bottle.
It will be available both on and on and off-premise across Australia with a recommended retail price of A$19 for a six-pack.

USA: Barley prices hardly move at all
|
There has been very little price movement in the barley markets of late, Farm & Ranch Guide reported earlier this week.
“Prices have hardly moved at all – changes have been within a dime,” was the way Sun Prairie Grain’s Kayla Burkhart described the latest movement in the feed and malting barley markets.
The only big change is rail movement for malting barley has vastly improved, and the maltsters are now calling for barley shipments, but the farmers are busy with spring’s work and don’t have time to haul the grain in from the farm.
This is the complete opposite from a couple months ago, when the farmers were wanting to move grain, but couldn’t due to rail congestion and the maltsters not wanting to take in the barley.
Burkhart wasn’t surprised by the March planting intentions report that indicated barley acreage will be down in North Dakota.
“The maltsters had reduced the number of contracted acres for this year and there isn’t much barley grown that isn’t contracted anymore,” she said. “There’s a few that do it, but they have to wait longer on delivery at times because the contracted grain has priority on delivery, but it’s usually not hard to find a price.”

Ukraine's 2014 grain harvest may exceed last year's record output of 63 million tonnes thanks to favourable weather this winter and spring, weather forecasters said on May 30.
Ukraine has helped to drive wheat prices higher this year as the market fretted about political unrest disrupting grain trade. But good crop conditions, regular export shipments and the election of a new president have eased concerns. There was greater concern about crops in Russia after recent hot and dry weather.
Hot and dry weather will dominate the European part of Russia in early summer, the head of Russian weather forecaster Hydrometcentre said on May 29, though crops may gain short-term relief from rain forecast this week.
The International Grains Council on May 29 raised its forecast for the European Union's wheat crop, including durum, to 144.9 million tonnes from a previous projection of 144.8 million, with an upward revision for France of 38.3 million from 38 million.
