The good, the bad and the ugly
ABSTRACT
It has long been thought since Tressl proposed it in
1978 that the cleavage of the acyl side chains of hop
alpha or beta acids results in a loss of bitterness and
may result in the formation of flavour active short
chain acids often resulting in rancid and cheesy off
flavours. The German researchers in this study found
that it might not be as bad as once claimed. They
confirmed that with warm aerobic storage, bitter acid
concentration decreases along with increases in the
concentrations of 2-methylpropanoic acid, and 2- &
3-methylbutanoic acids. However, with short term
cold aerobic storage (4 weeks at 0 C), the aroma
properties of hops may actually be positively
influenced. Read more

USA: Barley prices hardly move at all
|
There has been very little price movement in the barley markets of late, Farm & Ranch Guide reported earlier this week.
“Prices have hardly moved at all – changes have been within a dime,” was the way Sun Prairie Grain’s Kayla Burkhart described the latest movement in the feed and malting barley markets.
The only big change is rail movement for malting barley has vastly improved, and the maltsters are now calling for barley shipments, but the farmers are busy with spring’s work and don’t have time to haul the grain in from the farm.
This is the complete opposite from a couple months ago, when the farmers were wanting to move grain, but couldn’t due to rail congestion and the maltsters not wanting to take in the barley.
Burkhart wasn’t surprised by the March planting intentions report that indicated barley acreage will be down in North Dakota.
“The maltsters had reduced the number of contracted acres for this year and there isn’t much barley grown that isn’t contracted anymore,” she said. “There’s a few that do it, but they have to wait longer on delivery at times because the contracted grain has priority on delivery, but it’s usually not hard to find a price.”

USA, CA & OH: Greater Cincinnati considered as possible location for Stone Brewing Co’s new brewery
|
Greater Cincinnati is on the list of sites a California craft brewer is considering for a $31 million brewery project that would create 374 jobs, Cincinnati Business Courier reported on May 30.
Stone Brewing Co., the nation’s 10th-largest craft brewer, is looking for a site to supply customers east of the Mississippi River. It expects the site would create more than 120,000 barrels of beer and $100 million in revenue each year.
The facility would include brewing operations as well as packaging, distribution and administrative support. Other operations could also be added, including a tourist attraction with a restaurant and retail.
Clinton County officials are trying to lure the brewery to Wilmington International Airport.
A company spokeswoman said more than 200 site proposals were submitted to Stone Brewing but wouldn’t say how many were still being considered.

USA, NY: Utica-based F.X. Matt Brewing announces expansion plans
|
Utica-based F.X. Matt Brewing has announced plans to expand the aging and fermenting process of the brewery with an investment of about $3.5 mln, Drinks Business Review reported on May 30.
According to the company, which annually brews about 350,000 barrels of beer, the expansion will take place on Edward Street right across from the brewery and will see the addition of six tanks.
The tanks are expected to add a capacity of about 100,000 barrels.
Prior to the commencement of construction, a zoning change is required to be approved and the area needs to be re-zoned so as to declare it industrial, as part of the project.
F.X. Matt Brewing CEO Nick Matt said the project is slated for completion by mid 2015.

Canada, NS: Nova Scotia’s newest craft brewery to start offering its first beers in Falmouth
|
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reported on June 2 that Schoolhouse Brewery, Nova Scotia’s newest craft brewery, will be offering its first beers to the public at two pubs in Falmouth later this week.
In the works since last summer, Schoolhouse Brewery was founded by longtime homebrewer Cameron Hartley, and is located in a more than 150-year-old historic schoolhouse building where Hartley also lives with his wife and daughter.
The first two beers from Schoolhouse – Principal Ale, a 5% abv unfiltered and dry-hopped pale ale; and Chequers Ale, a 4.5% abv robust porter – will go on tap at the Library Pub in Wolfville on Friday, June 6th, and at the Spitfire Arms in Windsor on Saturday, June 7th.

USA, AZ: Freak'N Brewing Company opening scheduled for June 6
|
Freak'N Brewing Company will open on June 6 in Peoria, another instance of the locally owned microbrewery trend moving west, AZ Central reports.
Peoria Artisan Brewery was the West Valley's first. It opened in December and operates out of Litchfield Park at the Litchfield Taproom.
Freak'N Brewing has been developing its brew recipes for several years, even sampling them at spring-training games and festivals. But now, it has a taproom of its own at the Olive Business Park near Loop 101 and Olive Avenue.
During the soft opening, it will have at least three beers on tap: Freak'N American Wit, Freak'N Sessio'N Cream Ale and Freak'N IPA. Pints and growlers will be available.

USA, HI & MS: Kona Brewing Co. beers now available in Mississippi
|
Venturing further into the mainland, Hawaii’s Kona Brewing Co. on May 30 announced it has added Mississippi to its distribution footprint, which now covers 40 states.
Earlier this month, the island-themed beer brand owned by Craft Brew Alliance tapped retail channels in the key markets of Jackson, Hattiesburg, Gulfport, and Biloxi, through its network of Anheuser-Busch wholesalers on its way into the Magnolia State.
The full list of distributors the brewery is working with is as follows: Mississippi Distributors Inc. (Batesville), Mitchell Beverage LLC (Columbus, Tupelo), Delta Distributing Co. (Greenwood), Rex Distributing Co. Inc. (Gulfport), Southern Beverage Co. Inc. (Hattiesburg, Laurel, Richland, Vicksburg, Yazoo City), Mitchell Delta Distributing (Leland, Meridian), Southwest Distributors Inc. (Natchez, Summit), A&B Distributing Co. Inc. (Olive Branch).
“Mississippi is a great state for handcrafted beer, and it’s amazing to see how excited Mississippians are about Kona’s arrival,” said Aaron Marion, the brewery’s brand manager in a press release. “The warmth and openness of Southern hospitality goes perfectly with the Liquid Aloha lifestyle.”
Kona led the CBA portfolio (which also includes Widmer, Red Hook, Omission and Square Mile Cider), with total depletions of 11 percent for the first quarter of 2014.

USA, PA & NJ: Susquehanna Brewing Co. reaches agreements with new wholesalers in New Jersey
|
Pittston, PA-based Susquehanna Brewing Co. Inc. has reached agreements with three new wholesalers to bolster its distribution expansion in New Jersey. These agreements will give SBC coverage in the Northwest, Central and Southern areas of New Jersey, timesleader.com reported on June 3.
Susquehanna Brewing Co. chose the Banko Beverage network to cover 16 of the 21 counties that encompass New Jersey. Hub City Distributing Co., Lawrenceville, will cover four counties in the central part of the state. Warren Distributing Co. South, Hammonton, will cover six counties in the southern part of the state. Warren Distributing Co. North, Flanders, will round out the coverage by taking six Northwestern counties.
Susquehanna Brewing currently has coverage of 46 counties in Pennsylvania.
Susquehanna Brewing Company, Pittston, started brewing its products in April 2012. SBC was founded in 2010 by Mark Nobile and Ed and Fred Maier, formerly of United Beverage of NEPA. USA, WV: Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company preparing to launch in Charleston
|
There could soon be a new craft beer on tap in Charleston, courtesy of West Virginia’s newest producer, Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company, Charleston Daily Mail reported on June 3.
Co-owners Dave Kurcea and Wil Laska met two years ago through a mutual friend. Both men were long-time home brewing enthusiasts and both planned to start a commercial brewery, so they decided to join forces.
They now have a warehouse space near the Greenbrier Valley Airport in Lewisburg filled with stainless steel brewing equipment. The brewery plans to fill its first kegs in July, with bottles and cans coming by the end of the year.
Laska said there are about a dozen breweries in West Virginia, but only two currently package their products for outside sale. Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company will be the third.
The company eventually plans to open a small taproom at the brewery where customers can sample beers and buy some to take home. Until then, Greenbrier Valley beers will be available at bars and restaurants around the state. Kurcea is not ready to announce any official locations yet, but he had meetings last week with several Charleston establishments.
Their first beer will be the “Wild Trail Pale Ale,” a recipe developed by

Belgium & USA: Chimay Premičre now available in draft in select markets
|
After 31 years of importing Chimay, Manneken- Brussel Imports and Bičres de Chimay are proud to offer signature ale Chimay Premičre in kegs in select markets in the USA beginning in June, Brewbound reported on June 2.
The Trappist monks at Scourmont Abbey in Chimay, Belgium have been brewing Premičre since 1862. This copper-colored ale boasts flavors of apricots, brown sugar, and nutmeg—with aromatics made all the more dramatic by the draft pour. This announcement marks an important milestone for Chimay and the Trappist category in the U.S., as, along with the Chimay Cinq Cents, Premičre now joins the ranks of only a handful of Trappist beers available on draft in the USA.
Chimay is one of only ten Trappist breweries in the world. Certified Trappist breweries must strictly adhere to rules set out by the International Trappist Association, the governing body that oversees and protects the Trappist trademark. These beers can be identified by the hexagonal “Authentic Trappist Product” logo that is displayed on their label. This logo guarantees that:
The beer is produced within the walls of the monastery or in the vicinity of the monastery.
The monastic community determines the policies and provides the means of production. The whole process of

USA, VA: Heritage Brewing Company announces new partnership for Virginia distribution
|
Heritage Brewing Company announced on June 2 its partnership with Reyes Beverage Group’s Premium Distributors of Virginia, L.L.C. for distribution of its full portfolio of craft beer made from predominately local, American-sourced, organic ingredients.
“We have found kindred patriots at Premium Distributors of Virginia and are proud to work with them to deliver our beer into the hands of craft-beer loving patrons across Northern Virginia,” says Sean Arroyo, CEO & Co-Founder of Heritage Brewing Company.
Founded in 2013, brothers Sean and Ryan Arroyo opened the first microbrewery in Prince William with a 20-barrel brew house on January 1, 2014. The all-veteran team at Heritage aims to produce and sell 3,000 barrels of beer this year.
The craft brewery’s brands are currently available on draft, with 12-ounce cans and 750-milliliter bottles containing oak-aged brews available later this year.

USA, CO: Grossen Bart Brewery expected to open in Longmont this fall
|
After a nearly two-year search, the owners of Grossen Bart Brewery have announced they have signed a lease on a new 3,100-square-foot location at 1025 Delaware Ave. in Longmont, Times-Call reported on June 3.
Though they looked in other cities, including Boulder, Erie and Frederick, co-founder Shad Chancey said he and his partner, Taylor Wise, always had a preference for Longmont because they both live here and think the city provides plenty of opportunity for them to start and grow their business.
Several Longmont sites were considered before they finally settled on the Delaware Avenue location, he said.
"We found this location in January. Since then we've basically been in negotiations," Chancey said.
Plans are to open with a 10-barrel brewing system, he said.
"It's going to be a nice size tap room and on the side of it, we're going to have a beer garden out there," Chancey said.
Opening is planned for early fall, he said.
"We started this in 2012," Chancey said. "We got licensed to distribute and all that, but we were always just looking for the right location."
Over the two years, they have been brewing and distributing their beers where they could, including in restaurants, but were always limited in what they

Ukraine: Grain harvest may exceed last year’s thanks to good weather
|
Ukraine's 2014 grain harvest may exceed last year's record output of 63 million tonnes thanks to favourable weather this winter and spring, weather forecasters said on May 30.
Ukraine has helped to drive wheat prices higher this year as the market fretted about political unrest disrupting grain trade. But good crop conditions, regular export shipments and the election of a new president have eased concerns. There was greater concern about crops in Russia after recent hot and dry weather.
Hot and dry weather will dominate the European part of Russia in early summer, the head of Russian weather forecaster Hydrometcentre said on May 29, though crops may gain short-term relief from rain forecast this week.
The International Grains Council on May 29 raised its forecast for the European Union's wheat crop, including durum, to 144.9 million tonnes from a previous projection of 144.8 million, with an upward revision for France of 38.3 million from 38 million.

Australia: Craft beer industry growth hampered by exclusive tap contracts
|
It was November 2013, in the lead-up to the festive season - a crucial trading period for Australia's 7000 pubs, clubs and bars.
Sitting down to his computer, a Melbourne publican discovered an email waiting for him. Sent by an executive from Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), it contained an offer that left him gobsmacked.
One of CUB's specialty brews had been ''selling very well'' in other pubs, the email explained. It then suggested the publican sell that brew on tap - at the expense of a specific competing craft beer that the publican was already offering. ''I'll donate the first keg,'' the CUB executive offered.
The email suggested the beer be served in glasses smaller than a schooner, but that they be priced the same as a schooner.
''And that gives you … an extra A$50 per keg to the hotel,'' the executive wrote.
Fortunately for the craft brewer, the publican thought the proposal was underhanded and rejected it. ''Can you believe this rubbish? Those guys [CUB] are really coming after you,'' he told one of the sales representatives of the craft brewer.
It was, it seems, a rare victory for craft beer - a sector that has exploded in popularity worldwide, but that has

UK: Carlsberg to create new “crafted” portfolio of 28 beers
|
Carlsberg has chosen 28 beers to create a new “crafted” portfolio, aimed at its freetrade customers who want to expand their beer offer, The Morning Advertiser reported on June 2.
The brewer says year-on-year growth for craft beer in the UK is up 75% and the average pint of craft beer can be up to 90p a pint more expensive (both CGA Brand Index).
Beer writer Pete Brown authored the introduction to a guide to the portfolio, and said: “Despite its relatively small market share, four out of 10 publicans already think they should be stocking craft. That’s because it attracts a much broader set of drinkers than usually drink beer.
“These drinkers believe craft beer gives them a special experience that is worth paying more for. And that means a pub, bar or restaurant that still doesn’t offer craft beer is one that’s missing an obvious opportunity.”
The beers come from a number of breweries across the globe, including some of Carlsberg’s own such as the Swedish Backyard Brewery.
London-based Portobello Brewing Company, the American Stevens Point Brewery and Abbey brewery Grimbergen are also on the list, alongside more recognisable names such as Liefmans, Innis & Gunn, Greene King and Marston’s.

Zimbabwe: Delta Holdings reports phenomenal growth in new line of products
|
Zimbabwe Stock Exchange blue chip Delta Holdings says it has experienced a phenomenal growth in its new line of beverages, BizDay reported on June 2.
Matts Valela, Delta’s Finance Director, said the introduction of “Mahewu” – which he called “the new kid on the block” – had exceeded expectations realizing Z$15 million in sales last year.
Mahewu is a non-alcoholic traditional sorghum drink, which Delta introduced following its success in neighbouring Zambia.
In the joint address – which Valela made with the group’s Operations Director Etherton Mpisaunga – the beverages’ giant said its new “Chibuku Super” sorghum beer had also been extremely well-received by the market and had contributed much to the group’s revenue.
Delta is the market leader in beverages in Zimbabwe, accounting for 98% of all lager beer sales, 98% of soft drinks and 84% sorghum beer sales, according to an independent survey.
Valela said the company, which also owns 31% of Zimbabwean spirit manufacturer Afdis, was encouraged by the rise in volume sales of ciders. He told delegates to the Imara Investing in Africa conference that Afdis would soon embark on the local production of previously imported ciders.

Australia: Just launched Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc expected to attract beer, cider and wine drinkers

Coopers Premium Beverages has launched Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, a fruity wheat beer the brewer believes will attract not just beer drinkers, but also consumers of cider and wine, The Shout reported on June 2.
The five per cent ABV beer complements the existing Kronenbourg 1664 lager, which along with Carlsberg has been distributed by Premium Beverages for almost two years.
Already available in 32 other countries globally, Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc has hints of spiced orange and coriander and is packaged in a unique blue bottle.
It will be available both on and on and off-premise across Australia with a recommended retail price of A$19 for a six-pack.
