What about the aroma potential of glycoside-linked
compounds?
ABSTRACT
US and German researchers used spent hops
from CO2 extraction to brew beers that only differed
in the point of addition of the spent hop material (in
the boil, end of fermentation, after filtration) hoping
that enzyme activity would produce different
amounts of different monoterpenes. Though
analytical differences were not significant, the
sensory data showed that each beer was significantly
different. While the addition at end of fermentation
yielded in stronger tropical/melon like aroma, the
addition after filtration showed stronger herbal/ice
tea, grassy/hay and earthy/tobacco aroma. So yes,
spent hops add to your hop aroma and beer, but scientists have not yet quantified what it is! Read more

USA: Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors unveil ingredients of their beers on food blogger’s demand
|
Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors, two of the world's biggest beer makers, are posting online what's inside bottles of Budweiser and Miller Lite after pressure from a food blogger, ABC News reported on June 13.
The two companies on June 12 posted the ingredients of some of their most popular brands, and promised to be more transparent in the future. The announcements come a day after blogger Vani Hari posted a petition on FoodBabe.com to get major brewers to list what's in their beverages.
Anheuser-Busch posted the ingredients for its two top-selling brands on its website, tapintoyourbeer.com. It lists the same ingredients for Budweiser and Bud Light: Water, barley malt, rice, yeast and hops. The company, which also makes Beck's, Busch and Michelob beers, said it will list the ingredients for all of its other brands online "in the coming days." It's the first time Anheuser-Busch has detailed the ingredients of its beers.
MillerCoors posted the ingredients of Miller Lite, Coors Light and six other brands on its Facebook page. Most are made from water, barley malt, corn, yeast and hops, the company said.
"We also value transparency and are happy to comply with the request for additional information," MillerCoors said in a statement. The company

Brazil: New report suggests real winner of World Cup of soccer will be the alcohol industry
|
A new report published on June 11 in a British medical magazine suggests the World Cup of soccer (which began on June 12) is to a large degree about the beer being served in the stands as it is about the sport played on the pitch, Global News said.
“Whichever country hoists aloft the World Cup trophy, the real winner will be the alcohol industry,” Jonathan Gornall, the author of the report, which ran in the BMJ, formerly the British Medical Journal, said.
The report blasts FIFA for forcing the Brazilian government to lift a decade-old ban on beer sales within stadiums – a ban designed to end brutal and sometimes deadly violence between rival fan bases.
In May 2012, Brazil’s federal senate passed a series of rules required by FIFA for the country to host the global spectacle. Among them, the allowance of beer sales in stadiums and possible tax breaks for tournament sponsors.
The passage of the conditions came after Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s biggest brewer, extended its sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup through 2022.
Relations between FIFA and Brazil became strained when government officials delayed the bill’s passage, according to reports at the time.
A fear among some now is that the

Kenya: Government bans sale of a popular German beer brand for not having an expiry date
|
Kenya’s government has banned the sale of a popular German beer brand from the Kenyan market, The Star reported on June 13.
In a circular, the Health ministry termed Burg Premium Extra Lager as "unfit for human consumption" and called for its withdrawal from the market.
Director of public health Kepha Ombacho said the beer brand does not have an expiry date, which is against the law.
“The alcoholic beverage that is brewed in Germany contravenes the provisions of the foods, drugs and chemical substances act,” he said.
Ombacho directed health officers in the country to confiscate the beer from the market and take legal action against anyone selling it.
He said the ministry is keen to address under-quality imported food and drinks in the country.
“The ministry will release names of more alcoholic drinks that do not meet the set standards in due course,” Ombacho said.

India: King Cobra beer now available in West Bengal
|
Molson Coors Cobra India said on June 11 that it launched its premium beer King Cobra in West Bengal, Hindu Business Line reports.
In a statement, the company said this summer the beer would be available in key cities in the State in 650 ml bottles and 500 ml cans.
The company’s brewery is located in Bihar.

Kenya: Keroche Industries accuses NACADA of omitting it from approved liquor and breweries list
|
Keroche Industries has accused NACADA (the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse) of engaging in a smear campaign against its product, The Star reported on June 10.
On June 9, Keroche said in an interview NACADA is driven by hatred.
CEO Tabitha Karanja said unnamed competitor is using the agency to fight its products in the market.
On June 5, NACADA listed all the approved liquor and breweries in the country but left out Keroche products.
On June 9, Keroche said it was among the firms that first handed over its products and documents to Kenya Bureau of Standards for approval.
Karanja said she was shocked when the names of the company products were omitted from the list published by NACADA in the local dailies.
“The Kenya Bureau of Standards collected samples of our products and approved them and we are wondering why our products were omitted from the NACADA list,” she said.
Karanja was speaking to the press in Naivasha town.
She said the firm has nothing to hide and can be scrutinised anytime.
“We are very keen on quality and we welcome government agencies to sample any of our products and test them so that the issue can be cleared,” Karanja said.

Ghana: Accra Brewery Limited launches redeveloped Stone Lager
|
Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), Ghana’s premier brewing company and a subsidiary of SABMiller Plc, has launched a redeveloped Stone Lager at an impressive ceremony in Accra, GhanaWeb reported on June 13.
The new Stone Lager replaces Stone Strong Lager, one of the company’s well-known brands, which has won several awards since its introduction in 2006. With the launching of the new Stone Lager, ABL becomes the first ever brewery in Ghana to brew beer with high quality locally grown rice as one of the ingredients.
Mr Anthony Grendon, Managing Director of ABL, said the introduction of the new beer was necessary because Stone Strong Lager had been steadily losing its consumer appeal due to changes in beer consumption habits, from heavier strong alcohol beers to lower alcohol and more sessionable offerings.
“The new Stone Lager has been inspired by the need to satisfy the evolving expectations of our cherished customers and you our valued partner,” he said. The Stone Lager has no added sugar and has reduced 5.2% alcohol by volume.
Mr Grendon said through Stone Lager ABL was putting its support behind Ghanaian rice farmers, assuring them of a larger sustainable demand for their yields. The initiative by ABL, he said, reaffirmed the

Ukraine: Southern regions start 2014 grain harvesting a few weeks earlier than last year
|
Ukraine’s southern regions have started 2014 grain harvesting, a few weeks earlier than last year, analyst UkrAgroConsult said on June 12.
“First of all the initial mowing of winter barley should be made. Farmers note that harvesting has begun with prematurely ripened low-growing plants which had not received enough moisture,” the consultancy said in a report.
The Ukrainian agriculture ministry has said that farms had sown 2.6 million hectares of early spring grains, mostly spring barley.
Analysts and traders have said Ukraine is likely to harvest around seven million tonnes of barley this year versus 7.6 million tonnes in 2013.
They forecast that the harvest of wheat could remain at last year’s level of around 22 million tonnes.

Canada & South Korea: The Barley Council of Canada supports government’s efforts to move forward on free trade deal with South Korea
|
The Barley Council of Canada (BCC) supports the federal government's efforts to move forward on the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA), Ein News reported on June 12.
"We need a level-playing field to be competitive in South Korea," said BCC Chair Brian Otto. "By moving this agreement forward, Canada's barley industry is poised to capitalize on this growing market."
With the text for the agreement now formalized, it is imperative that the CKFTA remains a priority. Upon implementation, the CKFTA is expected to gradually remove historically high tariffs on Canada's agri-food exports. Currently, Canada exports over C$600 million worth of agri-food products to South Korea every year-down from nearly C$1 billion in 2011.
"The CKFTA will put us in line with the European Union, the United States and Australia, who already have trade agreements with Korea," added Otto. "The Korean market needs access to quality feed, malt and food barley, and Canada's value chain can fill that need."
The CKFTA is also expected to result in considerable benefits for the beef and pork industries. Canada's barley industry will reap the rewards of this as over 80 per cent of harvested barley goes towards feed production for livestock. This will also have a positive impact
