New treasures in hop bracts
ABSTRACT
If you think that every compound in hops is known
and characterised, we have to disillusion you. Though
we know most of what can be found in the lupulin
glands, we are pretty clueless about the rest of the
hop - but perhaps not any longer! Japanese
researchers have identified 20 compounds which so
far were not reported. Most of the compounds were
hydrophilic glycosylated and/or esterified analogues
of abscisic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols,
lignans, hydroxybenzoic acids, or carotenoids. In
addition, large amounts of highly oligomeric
proanthocyanidins were found. Who knows what the
potential of these compounds in a health context is! Read more

World: Diageo named as one of the targets for AB InBev’s or SABMiller’s acquisitions
|
Diageo bounced off a seven-week low on June 27 as theories revived that it might be a poison pill for SABMiller, the Financial Times reported.
SAB has climbed in recent weeks on growing speculation that fellow brewer AB InBev has been examining a bid. The latest idea was that SAB might stymie AB InBev’s interest by pursuing a relatively straightforward merger with Diageo, which would also give it access to the Guinness beer business.
Combining Diageo and SABMiller would create a £100 bln business generating annual free cash flow before dividends of about £5 bln, Barclays forecast. It estimated cost savings of £430 mln on top of synergies from using SAB’s global beer distribution network.
“Diageo’s business has stalled over the last year and pressure on management to address investor concerns around slowing top-line growth rates is building,” said Barclays. “A merger of the world’s number one spirits and number two brewing businesses would create a potent new force in the Total Beverage Alcohol (TBA) category.”
Diageo is said to have looked at combining with SAB in the past, including in 2007 when the groups weighed a carve-up of Scottish & Newcastle.
Another possibility, according to Citigroup, would be for AB InBev to buy Diageo’s

USA: Constellation Brands expected to post another quarter of strong earnings
|
Constellation Brands is expected to post another quarter of strong earnings growth when it reports fiscal first-quarter results on July 2, Investors.com reported.
The producer, importer and distributor of alcoholic beverages is expected to report that profit jumped 145% to 93 cents a share, building on robust gains of 35%, 75% and 72% in the three prior quarters. Sales for the quarter are seen more than doubling to $1.41 billion after similarly solid increases in recent quarters.
Constellation's growth has been fueled by its acquisition last year of Mexico-based Grupo Modelo's U.S. business, which includes beer such as Pacifico, Corona Extra, Corona Light, Negra Modelo and Modelo Especial.
The deal reduced the Victor, N.Y.-based company's reliance on wine sales and turned it into America's third largest beer brewer and seller.
Profit for the fiscal year ending in February 2015 is expected to rise 26% to $4.09 a share, followed by a 12% gain the next year.
Constellation has a 97 Composite Rating, tops in the 17-stock Beverages-Alcoholic industry group, which was ranked No. 56 out of 197 as of Friday's IBD.

China: Zhujiang Brewery to install new bottling line and increase capacity
|
Zhujiang Brewery (Guangzhou) will invest CNY76 mln (EUR 9 mln) in the construction of a new bottling line at its facility, Reuters reported on June 25.
The investment will make it possible for the brewery to increase its production capacity to 5,000 hl.
The works are expected to be completed in 12 months, it is reported.
|
Angola: SABMiller’s N’gola brewery to increase production capacity
|
Fábrica de Cervejas N’gola, the only beer brewery in southern Angola, plans to increase its production capacity from 300,000 to 1.1 million hectolitres per year, said the unit’s director, João Pedro Lopes.
Cited by the Angop news agency on June 30, Lopes said the increase was the result of new investments which enabled the number of filling lines to rise from two to three.
He stressed that regular production on the three filling lines means N’gola can quadruple its sales points, creating more business for the region’s families and providing more direct and indirect jobs.
The N’gola brewery has existed since 1974 and came under control of South Africa’s SABMiller group in 2000.

USA: Large US brewers could learn something from their Mexican counterparts
|
Before the World Cup kicked off last month, U.S. team captain Clint Dempsey lent his image to just two beer ads produced by Anheuser-Busch InBev: one was for U.S. Soccer and World Cup sponsor Budweiser and another for Mexican brand Modelo Especial, The Street reported on June 29.
Budweiser has lost about 30% of its sales since the earliest days of the economic downturn in 2007. It has slipped to the No. 3 beer brand in the U.S. with less than 8% of the overall beer market and fewer than 17 million barrels of production. That's massive when compared to the roughly 3 million barrels produced by a small brewer like D.G. Yuengling & Sons, but disappointing compared to the 50 million barrels and 25% market share Budweiser boasted in 1988. Modelo Especial, meanwhile, poured only roughly 3.6 million barrels worth of its beer into the U.S. last year, but that's a 64% increase from 2010 and includes double-digit percentage point increases for every year since.
It's far from alone, either. Stablemate Corona Extra has seen its U.S. production rise slowly but steadily from 7.17 million barrels in 2010 to 7.26 million last year. That's more beer than Yuengling and Samuel Adams

USA: AB InBev challenging trademark application by Natty Greene’s Brewing Company
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev is challenging a trademark application filed by Natty Greene’s Brewing Company, a craft brewery operating out of Greensboro, N.C., Paste Magazine reported on June 27.
Natty Greene’s tried to trademark the name of their company, “Natty Greene’s” but AB InBev claimed the name falls too close to one of their own brands of beer, Natural Light. Apparently, AB InBev had previously filed trademarks for “Natty Light,” “Fatty Natty, and “Natty Daddy,” and has “sold millions of dollars’ worth of beer under the Natty marks, and has spent millions of dollars advertising and promoting its products under these trademarks.”
The insinuation here is that Natty Greene’s is going to slip in and benefit from all the hard work AB InBev put into the Natty Light brand.
Kayne Fisher, one of the co-owners of Natty Greene’s, said in an interview that the challenge is “unfounded.” The brewery is named after Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War Hero. Natty Greene’s application had been approved by the patent office prior to AB InBev’s challenge, but now the situation could potentially be settled in court.
