New treasures in hop bracts

ABSTRACT
If you think that every compound in hops is known and characterised, we have to disillusion you. Though we know most of what can be found in the lupulin glands, we are pretty clueless about the rest of the hop - but perhaps not any longer! Japanese researchers have identified 20 compounds which so far were not reported. Most of the compounds were hydrophilic glycosylated and/or esterified analogues of abscisic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, lignans, hydroxybenzoic acids, or carotenoids. In addition, large amounts of highly oligomeric proanthocyanidins were found. Who knows what the potential of these compounds in a health context is!

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands expected to post another quarter of strong earnings
Constellation Brands is expected to post another quarter of strong earnings growth when it reports fiscal first-quarter results on July 2, Investors.com reported.

The producer, importer and distributor of alcoholic beverages is expected to report that profit jumped 145% to 93 cents a share, building on robust gains of 35%, 75% and 72% in the three prior quarters. Sales for the quarter are seen more than doubling to $1.41 billion after similarly solid increases in recent quarters.

Constellation's growth has been fueled by its acquisition last year of Mexico-based Grupo Modelo's U.S. business, which includes beer such as Pacifico, Corona Extra, Corona Light, Negra Modelo and Modelo Especial.

The deal reduced the Victor, N.Y.-based company's reliance on wine sales and turned it into America's third largest beer brewer and seller.

Profit for the fiscal year ending in February 2015 is expected to rise 26% to $4.09 a share, followed by a 12% gain the next year.

Constellation has a 97 Composite Rating, tops in the 17-stock Beverages-Alcoholic industry group, which was ranked No. 56 out of 197 as of Friday's IBD.

Brewery news USA: Large US brewers could learn something from their Mexican counterparts
Before the World Cup kicked off last month, U.S. team captain Clint Dempsey lent his image to just two beer ads produced by Anheuser-Busch InBev: one was for U.S. Soccer and World Cup sponsor Budweiser and another for Mexican brand Modelo Especial, The Street reported on June 29.

Budweiser has lost about 30% of its sales since the earliest days of the economic downturn in 2007. It has slipped to the No. 3 beer brand in the U.S. with less than 8% of the overall beer market and fewer than 17 million barrels of production. That's massive when compared to the roughly 3 million barrels produced by a small brewer like D.G. Yuengling & Sons, but disappointing compared to the 50 million barrels and 25% market share Budweiser boasted in 1988. Modelo Especial, meanwhile, poured only roughly 3.6 million barrels worth of its beer into the U.S. last year, but that's a 64% increase from 2010 and includes double-digit percentage point increases for every year since.

It's far from alone, either. Stablemate Corona Extra has seen its U.S. production rise slowly but steadily from 7.17 million barrels in 2010 to 7.26 million last year. That's more beer than Yuengling and Samuel Adams ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Upstate Brewing looking to expand its brewing operation
Upstate Brewing in Horseheads is looking to expand its brewing operation and build a new tap room, The Leader reported on June 29.

The Town of Horseheads’ planning board will review site plans for the expansion when it meets at 7 p.m. on July 2.

The craft brewery, located 3028 Lake Road, plans to add space for three or four new brewing tanks and build a larger, nicer tap room for beer tastings, said Mark Neumann, who owns Upstate Brewing along with Ken Mortensen.

“We wanted to increase production,” Neumann said. “We’re going into Wegmans and a few other new places with our cans, and business has been far outpacing production.”

Upstate Brewing opened in 2012 with two beers, Common Sense Kentucky Common Ale and India Pale Wheat, and rapidly expanded distribution to Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, New York City and other areas.

Upstate also brews four rotating seasonal beers and are working on adding a third year-round beer, Neumann said.

If the planning board approves the project, work on the expansion would likely begin in August, Neumann said.

Brewery news USA, SC: Decision on Stone Brewing’s possible expansion to South Carolina not likely until mid-July
The decision on whether South Carolina will be picked for Stone Brewing Co.’s multimillion-dollar eastward expansion will likely be on hold at least through the middle of July — but one feature, the state’s Lowcountry ports system, will be a factor, a company representative was quoted as saying by by islandpacket.com on June 28.

The company’s founder and CEO, Greg Koch, is currently on sabbatical, said Jason Selby, the San Diego-area brewery’s representative for South Carolina.

“I just can’t imagine us making a decision before Greg got back from the sabbatical, which should be the middle of July,” he said.

And contrary to published reports in other media, the nation’s 10th-largest craft brewer hasn’t selected a list of finalists, Selby said.

“There’s no official word on where we’re going,” Selby said. “There’s no official … place that’s in, place that’s out. Everyone is still in play, as far as I know, to get the brewery here.”

And by “everyone,” Selby said he can only say “everyone in the United States east of the Mississippi.”

“They’ve been on the East Coast for months going around and shaking hands, kissing babies and looking at locations and doing what you do when you are looking to invest over $100 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Augusta County to get its first brewery this fall
Augusta County will get its first brewery this fall, News Leader reported on June 27.

Seven Arrows Brewing Co., a microbrewery will open at 2508 Jefferson Highway just outside the Waynesboro city limits and plans to be up and running in late October to early November.

The owners, Melissa and Aaron Allen, have home brewed for years, and Arron, the brewmaster, has a bachelor's in chemical engineering and has pursued formal brewing certification with the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.

Allen, who worked for MillerCoors in Elkton, decided to start home brewing when the craft brewery industry was starting to take off in the Valley.

He didn't think he would find a passion that would lead him to want to open his own brewery, but that's what happened, said Melissa Allen.

"We decided to take the plunge and just do it," she said.

They decided on the Fishersville area as a mid-way point between Staunton, Waynesboro and Stuarts Draft.

"A lot of people around here they don't want to drive over the mountain or go up north to have a beer after work," Allen said, referring to the breweries in Nelson County and in Harrisonburg. "We thought this area could use another brewery."

Staunton currently has three breweries, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Clipper City Brewing Company preparing for $2 mln expansion
Clipper City Brewing Company will soon be producing more beer.

Workers at the brewery in Halethorpe are busy now preparing for a $2 million expansion, which provide the space and equipment for the company to produce more of their pirate-themed Heavy Seas line of beers, lagers, ales and stouts, The Baltimore Sun reported on June 27.

Deliveries of equipment are being unloaded at the warehouse located at 4615 Hollins Ferry Road and the new brewing tanks are expected to be up and running by August, said Christopher Leonard, operations manager and brewmaster.

The expansion on the site involves dismantling mezzanines, disconnecting plumbing and electrical wires, demolishing office space and making a variety of other changes to the building, Leonard said.

"It's been very, very busy, just from a brewing perspective. I'm very excited to see the new equipment," said Chris Schultz, an Arbutus resident and brewing team leader at the company.

The cavernous warehouse on Hollins Ferry Road produces thousands of gallons of beer each day, yet was struggling to keep up with demand, which is why new equipment was installed in the building last week, Leonard said.

The expansion will allow the growing company, which was founded 1995, to increase their production from 200 to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Partners hope to open Persimmon Hollow Brewing Co. in downtown DeLand in August
Partners Joe Evens and Leon Merrow are preparing to open their new business, Persimmon Hollow Brewing Co., in downtown DeLand later this summer. It will be Volusia County’s fourth microbrewery to open in recent years and the only one in operation on the county’s west side, The Daytona Beach News Journal reported on June 27.

“It’s incredible. It’s a dream,” said Carelli, of the transformation of the space. “Actually seeing it happen is incredible.”

Come August, the brewery hopes to start production on four or five different varieties of beer and invite the public into its tasting room for a drink or two.

“All the equipment to brew is already set, we’re doing the plumbing right now,” he said. “The tasting room is getting close. Then, we’ve just got to make some beer.”

Persimmon Hollow will be located along West Georgia Avenue, near popular bar and music venue Cafe DaVinci as well as Artisan Alley’s eclectic mix of shops and restaurants.

Area business leaders say they hope the brewery will bring life to a lesser-developed section of downtown DeLand.

Known to some as the SoNY district — short for “South of New York (Avenue),” the city’s main east-west thoroughfare — the area in recent years has ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: The Green World Brewing Company almost ready for opening in Schoharie County
The Green World Brewing Company is believed to be the first brewery in Schoharie County, TWC News reported on June 30.

The first batches of Green Wolf Beer are already in the works using local ingredients. According to owner Justin Behan, the brewery plans to launch with six different varieties.

The beer will be served at The Apple Barrel Cafe in Schoharie and a tap room in downtown Middleburgh.

"Schoharie County was one of the leaders of hops growing back in the 19th and 20th centuries, but hops farms are coming up again and we've been coming up again," said Behan.

The tap room is scheduled to open in July.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev challenging trademark application by Natty Greene’s Brewing Company
Anheuser-Busch InBev is challenging a trademark application filed by Natty Greene’s Brewing Company, a craft brewery operating out of Greensboro, N.C., Paste Magazine reported on June 27.

Natty Greene’s tried to trademark the name of their company, “Natty Greene’s” but AB InBev claimed the name falls too close to one of their own brands of beer, Natural Light. Apparently, AB InBev had previously filed trademarks for “Natty Light,” “Fatty Natty, and “Natty Daddy,” and has “sold millions of dollars’ worth of beer under the Natty marks, and has spent millions of dollars advertising and promoting its products under these trademarks.”

The insinuation here is that Natty Greene’s is going to slip in and benefit from all the hard work AB InBev put into the Natty Light brand.

Kayne Fisher, one of the co-owners of Natty Greene’s, said in an interview that the challenge is “unfounded.” The brewery is named after Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War Hero. Natty Greene’s application had been approved by the patent office prior to AB InBev’s challenge, but now the situation could potentially be settled in court.

Brewery news USA, MA: Bad Martha Beer Co. launched in Edgartown
Passengers on the ferry from Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard this summer aren’t likely to miss an island-centric brew on their Steamship Authority vessel, The Boston Globe reported on June 28.

Bad Martha Beer Co. launched its IPA on the ferries on Memorial Day and opened a brick-and-mortar shop in Edgartown in time for the summer crowds. The store will feature six or more beers brewed on site, along with two from Mercury Brewing in Ipswich.

The brewery is the creation of Jonathan Blum, global nutrition and public affairs officer for Yum! Brands and a 25-year Vineyard resident. A marketing expert (Yum! has 41,000 restaurants in 28 countries and includes Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC), Blum came up with the concept for Bad Martha and built the beer around it. He hired Jim Carleton, formerly of Boston Beer Works, to lead his operation. Carleton moved his wife and daughter to the island this year. “Most breweries start with somebody who really knows how to brew beer, which I don’t,” says Blum. “They start in a garage or basement, and then if they get lucky, they take off and they grow. I’m a marketer and wanted to start with the marketing aspect ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Mudbug Brewery expected to open in Thibodaux in the next couple of months
Mudbug Brewery, the first brewery in the area, is expected to open in Thibodaux in the next couple of months, according to its owners.

“The brickwork in the tasting room is mostly done and looks AMAZING!!! Crew is prepping for electrical hook up soon! After all the rain last week, looks like the parking lot will FINALLY get poured soon too!!!” the company wrote on its Facebook page.

Brewery President Brance Lloyd said the facility, on the West Thibodaux Bypass near the Congo Lounge, will include a tasting room that will be able to hold between 90 and 100 people, with a full service bar and a window providing a unique look into the production room. When in production, customers will be able to catch a glimpse of the brewing process. The tasting room will be open Fridays and Saturdays.

Behind the tasting room will be a cold room, providing cold beer to the tasting room, and a 5,500-square-foot production room that will include a brewhouse, brewing plant, grain room, fermentation area, boiling room and other brewing essentials.

Though they can envision expansion in the future, co-owner Peter Leichty said it will be down the road.

Brewery news World: Diageo named as one of the targets for AB InBev’s or SABMiller’s acquisitions
Diageo bounced off a seven-week low on June 27 as theories revived that it might be a poison pill for SABMiller, the Financial Times reported.

SAB has climbed in recent weeks on growing speculation that fellow brewer AB InBev has been examining a bid. The latest idea was that SAB might stymie AB InBev’s interest by pursuing a relatively straightforward merger with Diageo, which would also give it access to the Guinness beer business.

Combining Diageo and SABMiller would create a £100 bln business generating annual free cash flow before dividends of about £5 bln, Barclays forecast. It estimated cost savings of £430 mln on top of synergies from using SAB’s global beer distribution network.

“Diageo’s business has stalled over the last year and pressure on management to address investor concerns around slowing top-line growth rates is building,” said Barclays. “A merger of the world’s number one spirits and number two brewing businesses would create a potent new force in the Total Beverage Alcohol (TBA) category.”

Diageo is said to have looked at combining with SAB in the past, including in 2007 when the groups weighed a carve-up of Scottish & Newcastle.

Another possibility, according to Citigroup, would be for AB InBev to buy Diageo’s ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Zhujiang Brewery to install new bottling line and increase capacity
Zhujiang Brewery (Guangzhou) will invest CNY76 mln (EUR 9 mln) in the construction of a new bottling line at its facility, Reuters reported on June 25.

The investment will make it possible for the brewery to increase its production capacity to 5,000 hl.

The works are expected to be completed in 12 months, it is reported.

Brewery news Angola: SABMiller’s N’gola brewery to increase production capacity
Fábrica de Cervejas N’gola, the only beer brewery in southern Angola, plans to increase its production capacity from 300,000 to 1.1 million hectolitres per year, said the unit’s director, João Pedro Lopes.

Cited by the Angop news agency on June 30, Lopes said the increase was the result of new investments which enabled the number of filling lines to rise from two to three.

He stressed that regular production on the three filling lines means N’gola can quadruple its sales points, creating more business for the region’s families and providing more direct and indirect jobs.

The N’gola brewery has existed since 1974 and came under control of South Africa’s SABMiller group in 2000.
