USA: Constellation Brands not particularly concerned about AB InBev’s new Mexican beer brand
|
As part of the agreement with the Justice Department allowing it to acquire Grupo Modelo, Anheuser-Busch InBev had to give up to Constellation Brands its perpetual rights to Grupo Modelo's brands in the U.S., particularly Corona, a portfolio of brews that left the brewer with a large hole to fill in the growing Mexican beer movement.
According to Euromonitor International, Mexican beers are dominating imports, with brands like Heineken's Dos Equis and Corona leading the way. Constellation's other Crown Imports brand, Modelo Especial, has grown by 63% in the U.S. market since 2010.
Higher sales of Corona powered Constellation's fiscal 2015 first-quarter earnings that were released last week, with brand depletions growing more than 3% and accounting for 10% of the U.S. beer category's dollar growth. According to the market researchers at IRI, Corona Extra was the only top-five U.S. beer brand in its channels that posted dollar-share growth during the quarter, becoming the fifth-largest beer brand in the U.S. overall by overtaking Anheuser-Busch's Natural Light. Corona Light remains the top imported light brand in the U.S., with IRI estimating it owns 55% dollar share of the import light market, increasing its dollar share by almost two points this past quarter.

US, ME: Geaghan Bros. Brewing Co. looking to expand brewing operations
|
Geaghan’s Pub took a big chance when it decided to open a brewery in Bangor in 2011. The risk has paid off, Bangor Daily reported on July 5.
Demand for Geaghan Bros. Brewing Co. beer has grown to the point where it is sometimes a challenge for the pub to keep its own bar and growler supply stocked, let alone consistently offer beer off-site.
So the Geaghans are looking to expand their brewing operations across the Penobscot River. Brewer Andrew Geaghan said Geaghan Bros. has signed the lease for a 3,600-square-foot garage at 34 Abbott St. in Brewer, formerly part of J.J. Nissen’s bakery operations.
The Nissen plant was in operation at 34 Abbott St. for more than half a century until it closed in 2005. Since then, the facility has been divvied up to provide space for a gym, hair salon and a few apartments.
Today, Geaghan brews out of a small addition connected to the pub in Bangor. In a given year Geaghan’s brew team has enough space and equipment to produce about 600 barrels of beer — which works out to roughly 18,600 gallons or 1,200 kegs.
In the Brewer garage, he expects to have capacity to brew up to 3,000 barrels

Shebeen Brewing Company of Wolcott, Connecticut is set to expand its distribution territory and add new and exciting beer styles in August. The company is partnering with Rogo out of East Hartford to cover Hartford, Windham and Tolland counties and F&F Distributors to cover Essex, Old Saybrook and New London county, Brewbound reported on July 7.
Shebeen is also releasing their diverse and eclectic beer styles in 22 ounce Bomber bottles along with their current 1 quart Growlettes and 12 ounce Black Hop IPA cans. Joining their popular lineup of Cannoli Beer, Concord Grape Saision and Irish Pale to name a few will be a Belgian style Grand Cru inspired by Pierre Celis, a Northeast-Style Turbo IPA and an Idaho IPA made with hops from Idaho and mashed potatoes.
A mixed 4 pack of seasonal beers will follow after the initial release of the single 22 ounce Bomber bottles. According to co-owner/head brewer Richard Visco, “We believe the 4 packs will offer great seasonal variety in a convenient carry case. USA, WI: St. Francis Brewing Co. looking to add a separate brewery
|
St. Francis Brewing Co. is looking to add a separate brewery to its brewpub and is considering sites in St. Francis and Milwaukee, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on July 7.
The St. Francis company has ramped up beer production in the last year through a contract with Sand Creek Brewing Co. in Black River Falls and started distributing to grocery stores and restaurants across Wisconsin, said co-owner Rick Michalski. It hopes to build a brewery of 18,000-20,000 square feet at an estimated cost of $8.5 million, and have capacity of 12,000 barrels a year.
The company produced 1,200 barrels of beer in 2013 through its on-site brewery and contract with Sand Creek, and it expects to double production this year, Michalski said.
Its top choice for the brewery is a vacant warehouse the company owns behind its brewpub at 3825 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. It hopes to receive financial incentives from the city of St. Francis such as grants or tax incremental financing, Michalski said. It also has an offer to purchase on a 2-acre lot in the city of Milwaukee, he said.
The brewpub and restaurant opened in April 2009. The company first attempted to build the brewery in 2010 but didn’t reach an

USA, FL: Tomoka Brewery’s new location will allow it to expand distribution
|
Pete Szunyogh had always dreamed of expanding his business, but he never thought he and partner Jennifer Hawkins would be able to do it so soon, The Daytona Beach News Journal reported on July 5.
“We thought it would happen in a couple years,” the co-owner of Tomoka Brewery said. “But it’s happening after one year and we’re excited about it.”
Szunyogh said he and Hawkins, who were celebrating the first anniversary of their business on July5, are now making plans to open a second location in Volusia County. Details, including the site of that future location, are still being worked out, he said.
Tomoka Brewery, at 188 E. Granada Blvd. in Ormond Beach, has a one-barrel brewing capacity but Szunyogh said the new location will have a 15-barrel capacity, which will allow the business to distribute its beer throughout the area.
Szunyogh said the new brewery will employ 15 to 20 people. He said he hopes the new spot, which will likely be in Daytona Beach or Port Orange, can open by year’s end.
Tomoka Brewery was the only locally owned brewpub in Volusia County when it opened.
There are now three, with two more — counting the planned second location for Tomoka Brewery —

USA, OH: The Phoenix Brewing Co. to hold ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 10
|
The Phoenix Brewing Co. will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the historic Carrousel District at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 10 at the business, located off Temple Court, Mansfield News Journal reported on July 8.
Bob Schroer of Mansfield, a great-great-grandson of the Charles Schroer who built the Schroer Building in 1914, will cut the ribbon.
The building, a former mortuary on North Diamond Street, is 100 years old this year.
The Phoenix Brewing Co., which opened in April, serves seven beers brewed on-site. Customers can enjoy the mortuary theme when ordering.
The vacant building has been transformed into a showplace with its exposed brick and concrete and rustic wooden bar, the latter purchased from an Ashland woman who salvaged it from a former Mansfield bar.
The business is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Thursdays, 4 p.m. to midnight Fridays and 2 p.m. to midnight Saturdays.
The brew pub offers seven beers: Pale Ale 419, John Doe American Wheat, Ferryman Stout (an oatmeal milk stout), 5 Guinea ESB (extra special bitter), Redemption IPA (India pale ale) and Danger City brown ale. The newest beer is The Schroer-Pilsner.
Steve Zigmund, one of the partners in the business, said the new beer is a German-style pilsner.

USA, WV: Big Timber Brewing now in business in Elkins
|
One of the newest breweries in West Virginia, Big Timber Brewing is now in business in downtown Elkins. But owner Matt Kwasniewski began preparing for the job thousands of miles away while working for a brewery in Polson, Montana. After spending time there, he decided to bring his knowledge back to the Mountain State, wboy.com reported on July 5.
"I kind of learned my way around a professional brew house, and I thought Elkins would be a good spot, so when I moved back home, I started working on that, and that was the end of 2011, I moved back here," said Kwasniewski.
Kwasniewski runs the brewery with his wife Ashley and his friend Sam Mauzy, They're already brewing a few different varieties of beer, but they said one of the best parts of the job is trying out new varieties and experimenting.
"You have categories of beer, like an IPA or an amber, but you can never stop discovering things about beer," said Ashley Kwasniewski.
They may not be sharing it with the world yet, but they ARE sharing with the state. Mauzy said they have their product in locations around West Virginia and are always looking to add more.

USA, AL: Serda’s Coffee Company owner looking to go into beer business in Mobile
|
Many Mobilians know Serda’s Coffee Company for its coffee. But now, owner John Serda is wanting to take his bar side of the company to a whole new level: Serda Brewing Company, Fox10TV.com reported on July 8.
The location: Downtown Mobile – just down Royal Street from his coffee shop at the old Rousso’s.
“Beer has always been a passion of mine,” said Serda.
He said it is an entirely brand new adventure…and much different from the coffee business he has been in since 2008.
“The beer business – I didn’t expect it to happen the way it has. But the opportunity came about and I jumped on board. Absolutely. I love beer and it’s something I’ve always wanted to be a part of and now I have an opportunity to do it,” he said.
The inside of his new brewery needs some work. After all, it’s been vacant for 10 years. The 15,400 square foot building is nearly six times the size of his current coffee shop on Royal Street.
“We have plenty of room. That’s the good thing about this building. We have at least 10 to 15 years of expansion capability in this building,” he said.
The ambiance, Serda said will be highlighting the

In a city rooted in beer brewing history, Jay Jubeck is filling the gap in the timeline.
“There are no commercial breweries in Dubuque,” said Jubeck.

Jubeck says anyone who donated $600 or more is considered a full member. He’ll give those members a growler full of a beer, that’s four pints, every week for one a year.
“The folks who were giving 2, 3,4,5,6 hundred dollars, that is a lot of money,” said Jubeck. “So we know that we had a lot of enthusiasm.”
In order to open the brewery Jubeck needed $30,000. He ended up raising $37,000. Now, he’s just ready to starting serving his original creations.

USA, MD: Ocean City Brewing Co. already open to public

Maryland native Mark Fesche landed a dream job in Ocean City, Maryland, by responding to a want ad on a brewer’s website.
Now it’s his job to dream up more than a dozen new flavors of ales, lagers and porters for an eager seaside audience of craft beer lovers – including his new boss, Delaware Online reported on July 5.
Fesche, 45, originally from Westminster, Maryland, left a brewing gig in North Carolina to join Ocean City Brewing Co. owner Josh Shores. The brew pub held its grand opening July 1.
“He has a lot of confidence in me, and I appreciate it,” Fesche said. “I think any brewer in the country would be really excited for someone to say, ‘Here – make all these beers,’ It’s just knocking them all off, one by one.”
The pub’s 50-foot-long wooden bar has two dozen taps, and “I’m pretty sure he wants to fill each one,” Fesche added. “I take it as a challenge.”
The 17,400-square-foot facility at 55th Street is the former home of The Adkins Co. hardware store and lumberyard. They have a 10-year lease on the property, where they’ll employ about 75 people during the summer season.

USA, NH: Nano brewery Lone Wolfe Brewing Co. opened in Wolfeboro
|
Lone Wolfe Brewing Co. opened last month at 29 Mill Street, Unit C1, in Wolfeboro, Fosters.com reported on July 7.
The Lone Wolfe Brewing Co. is a one-man, one-barrel, nano brewery, producing 31 gallons per batch.
The name was derived from the concept of the brewery being a single person operation located in the heart of downtown Wolfeboro.
In addition to the brewery, Lone Wolfe Brewing Co. has a 20-seat tasting room where visitors can sample beers.
There is one large “community table” and two smaller tables for groups of four.
“I envisioned a tasting room where people could meet and hang out together,” said owner and brewer Graham Combes, 28. “Right from the beginning, I knew that I wanted a community table.”
The brewery is next to Capelli Hair and Body Salon and across from the Kalled Gallery.
The unique design of the tasting room is thanks to leftover pallets that Combes amassed over several months.
“I wanted a sustainable design for the tasting room. The wood from the pallets was repurposed for the flooring, the tables, and the frames,” explained Combes.
Visitors can sample the four beers in a “flight” for $4 or sample a single beer for $1.50. Like many

South Africa: SABMiller to sell stake in gaming and hotel group Tsogo Sun to obtain cash for beefing up its beer business
|
SABMiller will sell its $1 billion stake in South Africa's top gaming and hotel group Tsogo Sun, the brewer said on July 7, giving it cash to beef up its African beer business.
The maker of Peroni and Miller Lite beers has been reviewing its 39.6 percent stake in Tsogo Sun as it concentrates on building its beer business in emerging markets, such as Africa, Asia and Latin America.
It has held the stake, now valued at $1.09 billion, since 2002 when it transferred its gaming and hotel assets to Tsogo Sun.
"Gaming and hotels are not core to our operations and we have concluded that the time is right for us to exit our investment through a transaction which is beneficial to shareholders of both SABMiller and Tsogo Sun," SABMiller Chief Executive Alan Clark said in a statement.
The brewer would reinvest the proceeds, including in its African operations, he said.
SABMiller said it would dispose of up to all of its shareholding through a placing of up to 305 million shares to South African and international institutional investors, and a buyback by Tsogo Sun of at least 130 million shares for about $260 million.

China: Craft beer industry growing despite lack of consumer awareness
|
Smog may be stifling Beijing’s image, but Kristian Li wants to turn that infamous haze into a marketing hook. The Toronto-born brewer, who has sold his Jing-A craft beers (with cofounder Alex Acker) in China’s capital since 2013, is pouring out a murky concoction that cheekily reminds Beijingers of their city’s dismal pollution. Li and Acker dubbed it the Airpocalypse IPA and, upon its recent debut, they announced a temporary discount that would coincide with the city’s air quality index. If pollution reached a level of 500 or more on that scale, then the suds would be given away for free—a fitting deal, considering the brew’s equally hazy flavour, which Li and Acker attained by leaving the batch completely unfiltered, Maclean’s reported on July 5.
The campaign went viral on social networks and in the international media. But the Jing-A duo say they’ve had even greater success with tapping into more positive aspects of Chinese culture. Unlike many local breweries that work to recreate the types of lagers expats are homesick for, Li and Acker brew distinctly local flavours, in the hopes of dipping into the deeper Chinese market.
“China is the biggest producer and consumer of beer in the world,” Li

Egypt: President decrees tax increase on cigarettes, beer and wine
|
Egypt's president decreed an increase in sales tax on cigarettes, beer and wine, the latest in a series of price hikes that aim to ease the country's staggering budget deficit, Global Post reported on July 6.
The decision announced on July 6 increases a flat tax on local and imported cigarettes to between 25 and 40 cents per pack, depending on the brand. It doubles an already existing tax on beer, from 100 per cent to 200 per cent, and increases the tax on local and imported wines to 150 per cent.
Since assuming the presidency last month, former military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has vowed to take tough decisions to deal with the country's battered economy, and bring it out of the bottleneck within two years.
Taking on one of the country's most explosive issues — its massive energy subsidies — his government partially raised fuel prices by up to 80 per cent over the weekend. The decision came after the government announced it is gradually raising electricity prices.
Subsidies on basic food stuffs and energy eat up nearly a quarter of the state budget. Despite recommendations by international financial institutions to slash subsidies, no Egyptian leader has managed to broach the issue, fearing

France: Nearly half of winter barley crop harvested by June 30
|
French farmers had gathered nearly half of this year's winter barley crop by June 30 after field work accelerated the previous eek in the European Union's top grain producer and exporter, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on July 4.
An estimated 44 percent of the area sown with winter barley had been harvested by June 30, up from 6 percent a week earlier. Farmers have also made an earlier start to the harvest than last year, when no crop had been cut by the end of June.
The durum wheat harvest is also under way, with 5 percent of the crop cut by June 30, up from 1 percent a week earlier. Harvesting of soft wheat, France's main cereal crop, had not started as of July 7, the data showed.
Harvest progress is expected to have slowed this week after heavy rain last weekend and more showers forecast from July 11.

Sri Lanka: Tourists boost beer sales in Sri Lanka
|
Strong tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka have boosted beer sales, with demand brimming over during the high season in popular tourist spots, the island's top beer maker was quoted by Lanka Business Online on July 7.
Sri Lanka has seen a strong increase in budget tourists who interact directly with the small businesses and enterprises.
"Unlike in the past, tourists are not confining themselves to the formal hotel sector," Chief Executive of Lion Beer (Ceylon) Plc Suresh Shah told shareholders in the annual report.
"They are seeking alternate accommodation options from high end villas to less expensive rooms in the informal sector.
"These trends are clearly reflected in the sales of Your Company’s brands through the retail and on-premise trade in tourist pockets. Volumes through these channels pick up sharply during the tourist “season”."
"Overall, tourism contributed significantly to Your Company’s sales performance."
Shah said the high margins maintained on beer sales by star classed hotels meant that those tourists prefer to obtain more beer from retailers in the vicinity.
