Brewery news Canada, BC: Sleeman Breweries announces plans to expand its Vernon brewing facility
Sleeman Breweries has announced plans to expand its Vernon, British Columbia brewing facility in order to meet the growing demand for the Okanagan Spring Brewery brand portfolio, Canadian Beer News reported on July 8.

In an announcement at the brewery on July 8 a C$4.4 million project for 2014-15 was unveiled that will include new tanks, increased brewhouse capacity, and refrigeration upgrades. The end result will be an increase in the annual capacity at the plant by approximately 20 per cent, as well as new jobs in brewing, packaging, maintenance and warehousing.

“Thirty years later, Okanagan Spring is still brewed in Vernon where it was first founded,” said ave Klaassen, Sleeman Vice President of Operations, in a statement. “From humble beginnings it’s become one of B.C.’s most popular craft beers – and is now extending nationally as well, with increased distribution in Ontario and Quebec. With the brewery now at capacity, we’re making a significant investment for the future.”

Brewery news Canada, ON: Underdog’s Brewhouse set to make debut as Ontario’s newest craft brewery
Underdog’s Brewhouse is getting set to make its debut as Ontario’s newest craft brewery, with the first full batch of its flagship All or Nothing Hopfenweisse being prepped for imminent release, Canadian Beer News reported on July 9.

Described as a “sessionable, golden and hop-forward wheat beer,” All or Nothing Hopfenweisse is currently being pitched to bars and restaurants in the Durham Region and GTA, and it will pouring at the Underdog’s booth at a number of beer festivals this summer, starting with the Burlington Beer Festival on July 18th to 20th.

Retail sales of beer at the Underdog’s brewery store is still pending approval, but for now, merchandise including t-shirts and bottle openers can be purchased on-site, as well as via the Underdog’s website.

Brewery news USA: Federal Trade Commission closing investigations of Anheuser-Busch vs. MillerCoors ad claims
The Federal Trade Commission’s division of advertising practices notified MillerCoors that it’s closing an investigation of ad claims lodged by rival Anheuser-Busch, and the agency is not recommending enforcement action in the matter, St. Louis Post Dispatch reported on July 10.

Last year, St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, the North American unit of AB InBev, challenged MillerCoors’ ad claims that its new Coors Light can design with a wider opening provided a “smoother, more refreshing pour” and “locks in frost brewed taste.” A-B also disputed Coors Light’s ad claim that it offered the “world’s most refreshing can.”

A-B, which introduced its own vented can for Bud Light last summer, initially filed a complaint about MillerCoors’ ads with the National Advertising Division, the investigative arm of the advertising industry’s voluntary self-regulation program. NAD’s policies and procedures are established by the ad industry’s Advertising Self-Regulatory Council.

After MillerCoors declined to provide a response for NAD’s review of the advertising, the case was forwarded to the FTC to determine whether the ads violated the Federal Trade Commission Act. In a statement to the Post-Dispatch last August, Chicago-based MillerCoors called A-B’s complaint frivolous: “All of the statements regarding the can either clearly are intended as acceptable marketing puffery or ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Track 7 Brewing Company to launch in new location in December
Track 7 Brewing Company signed a lease with Westcore Properties at 826 Professor Lane, Suite 100, in Natomas, according to PR Newswire.

The Natomas location is approximately 35,000 square feet, and Track 7 Brewing Company intends for the newly leased space to serve as its core manufacturing, packaging and distribution facility, as well as provide a second tasting room and office space to accommodate the explosion of product demand.

“Demand for our beers is through the roof,” said co-owner Ryan Graham. “As fast as we add new tanks at our Curtis Park facility, that capacity is absorbed. We needed to get ahead of our ability to meet demand for our beer, and this new facility will allow us room to grow.”

Track 7 Brewing Co. was established in 2011 and has grown from 340 barrels of beer in its opening year to just under 1,200 barrels of beer in 2013. The company projects it will produce approximately 2,800 barrels of beer this year – a bulk of which is its flagship beer, Panic IPA, which recently won Best of Show at the California State Fair edging out 859 beers from breweries throughout California.

“Right now, our draft product is limited ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: New production brewery planned on north side of Sioux Falls
Two local brewers are teaming up to open a new production brewery on the north side of Sioux Falls, Argus Leader reported on July 9.

Co-founders Blake Thompson and Derek Fernholz are planning to open the yet-unnamed brewery off North Cliff Avenue near the KOA. At 12,000 square feet, the building will house a 30-barrel brewing system and canning equipment, according to Fernholz.

"Our best case scenario is brewing at the end of September, with beer in the market mid-to-late October," he said.

Thompson and Fernholz are both brewers, but came to it in different ways.

Thompson's family are owners at two Napa Valley wineries (Jessup Cellars and Handwritten Wines), and he caught the brewing bug during a harvest job at Jessup in 2011. While there, he also did an internship at Napa Smith Brewery, which led to a six-month Master Brewers Program at University of California-Davis and courses with the Siebel Institute of Chicago, part of the World Brewing Academy.

"I like making beer," Thompson said, "you can be creative, it challenges you and it makes people happy. That's what I really want."

Fernholz started homebrewing with some buddies out of college eight years ago.

"I thought it was really fun making beer, and they were ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Bad Tattoo Brewing to open on July 12
British Columbia’s craft brewing community is growing once again, with the imminent opening of Bad Tattoo Brewing in the Okanagan Valley city of Penticton, Canadian Beer News reported on July 9.

The new brewery – which features a tasting room, retail store and pizzeria – will be opening to the public on Saturday July 12th, and will launch with four core brands: Los Muertos Cerveza Negra (“malt forward, crisp, medium-dark lager”), West Coast IPA (“aromas of grapefruit and pine forests, crisp hop bite, and lingering finish”), Full Sleeve Strong Stout (“rich and creamy with a little sweetness left in”), and ACP (“smooth and sessionable, touched with old world hops and crystal malts”). Up to 8 seasonal beers will be added to the line-up starting in the fall.

Brewery news USA, PA & NC: Troegs Brewing Company expanding sales into North Carolina
Troegs Brewing Company in Hershey is undergoing more growth as it expands sales into North Carolina and secures warehouse space in Elizabethtown, pennlive.com reported on July 10.

Owner Chris Trogner said the North Carolina expansion is the first new market for the Hershey-based craft brewer in about five years.

Troegs' beer will be available by early September in select areas including Charlotte, Durham, Goldsboro, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington and Winston-Salem.

Eventually the beer will be distributed throughout the state as Troegs scales up its production, Trogner said. The craft brewer installed eight new fermentation tanks in the past year to increase production.

Distribution in North Carolina stems from requests via email and social media sites such as Facebook as well as conversations with visitors at the brewery, Trogner said. The majority of those requests, he said, came from the Raleigh-Durham area.

Beer drinkers in North Carolina will find three year-round offerings - DreamWeaver Wheat, Perpetual IPA and Troegenator Double Bock – as well as seasonal beers such as Troegs' new fall, Hop Knife Harvest Ale. Troegs' Anthology variety packages will also will be distributed in North Carolina.

For now, Troegs is concentrating on expansion in the south but Trogner said eventually the brewery hopes to fill in ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: A.W.O.L. Brewery aiming to open later this year in Riverview
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a new brewery specializing in ales and meads is aiming to open later this year near Moncton.

Founded by Canadian Army Sergeant Robert Black, the fittingly named A.W.O.L. Brewery will be located in Riverview, New Brunswick, across the Petitcodiac River from Moncton. Black intends to offer three year-round beers – “a Belgian Pale Ale, an Amber brewed with rye-soaked oak chips, and a hoppy American Brown” – as well as Golden Boar Mead, with the latter to be made using local honey.

A crowdfunding campaign to raise capital for A.W.O.L. is running now on Indiegogo, with a target of C$18,000 to go towards a 2 barrel brewhouse, tanks and fermentors, kegs and bottles, and other start-up expenses. A variety of incentives are being offered to contributors, including merchandise, VIP event invitations, and the opportunity to contribute toward the naming and creation of various seasonal releases.

Brewery news USA, VA: Roanoke Railhouse Brewing Co. clears last hurdle to move operations to new location
Roanoke Railhouse Brewing Co. cleared its last hurdle on July 9 to move operations to a new location on Franklin Road after the Roanoke Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special-exception permit for the operation, Roanoke.com reported.

The craft brewer plans to relocate to a 3,000-square-foot building at 3106 Franklin Road across from Piccadilly Square. However, the property abuts a residential neighborhood, so the operation was required to get a permit to operate a retail outlet to sell its beers on the site.

The board voted unanimously to approve the permit despite concerns about a lack of parking that could compel patrons to park on the other side of Franklin Road and cross the four-lane highway — after having a few beers in some cases.

“We have a responsibility to not create a dangerous condition,” board member Drew Kepley said. Roanoke Railhouse President Steve Davidson, however, explained that his site has 14 spaces, and an adjacent business that is closed in the evenings when his retail operation would be open is allowing brewery customers to use its six spaces.

If his business doubles from his taproom at the brewery’s old location, he said, he’ll have two dozen customers at a time.

Roanoke Railhouse has been located ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA & VT: The Harpoon Brewery to become employee-owned in August
The Harpoon Brewery, founded in 1986 on the Boston waterfront by Dan Kenary and Rich Doyle, said on July 10 that it will become an employee-owned company as of Aug. 1, with Doyle handing over the role of chief executive to Kenary, The Boston Globe reports.

Several of the Boston-based brewer’s shareholders sold 48 percent of its stock shares to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP, a kind of trust account for employees. Harpoon said it has 187 full-time workers at its operations in Boston and Windsor, Vt., all of whom will receive shares in the company, said Kenary, who currently manages Harpoon’s operations and finances. The price paid for the minority stake in the company was not disclosed.

“ESOP ownership is a great fit for our industry,” Kenary said. He said senior managers had discussed succession plans for more than two years, and turned down several offers from private bidders.

The move toward employee ownership came as a surprise to Harpoon employees who gathered at the company’s headquarters for a meeting. Chris Bonacci, a brand manager who has worked for Harpoon for 11 years, said he and other employees would be learning a great deal about the implications over the next ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Rossland Beer Company on the verge to be launched as full commercial brewery
A former U-Brew operation in the small British Columbia city of Rossland is on the verge of being relaunched as full commercial brewery, Canadian Beer News reported on July 10.

Rossland Beer Company was founded by Petri Raito and Ryan Arnaud in 2012 as Trail Brewing in the nearby town of Trail, and then moved to Rossland and renamed last summer. The company ceased offering U-Brew services in late 2013, and after months of renovations and red tape, it’s preparing to officially re-open in its new form.

Kegs of Rossland’s flagship brands – including Paydirt Pale Ale – will be sent out soon to several local establishments, and the retail store and tasting room at the brewery is set to open later this month, with growlers, bottles and kegs available for take home sales, and pints and samples to enjoy on site.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine questions legality of recent grain exports from Crimea
Ukraine protested over recent grain exports from Crimea on July 10, questioning their legal basis following Russia's annexation of the region and fuelling tensions between the two countries, Reuters reported.

Russia and Ukraine are the region's main global grain exporters and rivals to supply customers in North Africa and the Middle East. Russia announced export deals from Crimea earlier on July 10 to Saudi Arabia and Cyprus.

Crimea has supplied 22,648 tons of barley to Saudi Arabia and 4,603 tons of barley to Cyprus for the period starting from June 23, Russia's Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service, or VPSS, said in a statement on its website.

VPSS did not name the supplier or whether other exports were planned from the region during the 2014 to 2015 marketing year, which started on July 1.

Ukraine questioned the legality of the exports.

"How they managed to export I don't know, because it is a sovereign territory of Ukraine," Ukraine's news agency Unian quoted Agriculture Minister Ihor Shvaika as saying.

"One can't do it without our phytosanitary certificates."

Crimea, which has several ports, is ready to export 400,000 to 500,000 tons of grain this year, or about half its expected harvest, the regional arm ministry has said.

Brewery news Russia: Ban on beer advertising to be relaxed until after the 2018 World Soccer Cup
Russia will relax a ban on beer advertising until after the 2018 World Soccer Cup, boosting brewers such as Anheuser-Busch InBev, International Business Times reported on July 10.

Moscow banned advertising alcoholic drinks across the media in 2012, in a bid to deal with the nationwide drink problem.

AB InBev, whose Budweiser brand is the official beer of the tournament, is expected to be the biggest winner from the decision.

The change to the advertising law will only allow beer ads on television in a sporting context, while print media advertising will not be restricted.

The move will "attract additional sponsorship revenue to support the organisation, staging and development of sports events in Russia," Russia's Federation Council said on July 9.

Russia is expected to spend in the region of $20 bln (€14.6 bln) overall on hosting the World Cup and the marketing spend from beer companies could help Moscow recoup some of the spending.

It is not known how much revenue has been raised by alcohol advertising at this year's World Cup in Brazil, but AB InBev said it boosted its marketing spending between $600 mln and $1 bln this year.

Russia, which only classified beer as an alcoholic beverage in 2012, has sought to rein ...More info on site
