Malt news USA, PA: Penns Mault to stat malting local barley by next summer
Adam Seitz, of Spring Mills, says that by next summer Penns Mault will be humming to the tune of machinery as it malts Pennsylvania-grown barley, Centre Daily Times reported on July 13.

That’s his goal — not to be just one of the few startup malt houses in Pennsylvania — but possibly the only in-state house to solely malt homegrown barley.

“Pennsylvania has an awesome brewing culture, but all of the malting barley is grown out of state and all of the malting is done out of state,” Seitz said. “I think we have a good enough climate for it, and I’m confident we can grow malting barley throughout the state.”

He was motivated by the proliferation of craft breweries and wanted his malted barley to be the link in the chain from the farmers to the brewers — creating a truly Pennsylvania beer.

Penn State agronomy professor Greg Roth said Seitz’s attempt to establish a malt house in Pennsylvania after the industry died in the state at least three decades ago is a rare endeavor.

“It was a different culture back then,” Roth said. “Malting is much more prevalent in Europe or the Western states. There’s a few other folks trying to start up ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Brew Hub coming to the rescue of brewers who struggle to keep up with demand for their beer
Business nightmares are plentiful for Joey Redner. As founder and CEO of Cigar City Brewing, he does his best to keep them at bay, The Tampa Tribune reported on July 12.

The first involves not being able to brew enough beer to meet demand for his skyrocketing Tampa-based craft beer brand.

He's already living through that nasty situation, even though Cigar City produces more than 40,000 barrels a year. There are some months when the number of unfillable orders for his Jai Alai IPA, Florida Cracker Belgian-style White Ale, Invasion Pale Ale and other beers almost matches the amount of cans and bottles he can actually ship from the Spruce Street brewery.

From there, the bad dream extends to thoughts of building a newer, larger brewery only to be saddled with $15 million in debt, a new partner or a bank loan to satisfy. Failure to meet customer demand, though, could mean being dropped by distributors unsure of whether they can keep bars, restaurants — and now stadiums and cruise ships — supplied with his suds.

To the rescue comes Brew Hub, a new 51,000-square-foot facility that sits along eastbound Interstate 4 in Lakeland that in August will begin producing beer for Cigar City ...More info on site

Barley news USA, ID: Farmers expect another year of increasing barley cash receipts
2013 was a banner year for Idaho barley. Growers planted more of the crop and took home more money for the fourth straight year - a decade-high $337 million, Idaho Statesman reported on July 16.

Barley's rising price and value as a low-water crop persuaded more of Idaho's roughly 5,000 barley growers to increase barley acreage over the past 10 years. Idaho's 620,000 acres of barley planted were the third-highest in the nation behind Montana [990,000 acres] and North Dakota [760,000 acres].

The beer industry's thirst for malting barley has propelled demand, says Pat Purdy, who this year planted barley in 2,100 acres of his 2,500-acre farm near Picabo. He sells his malting barley to Anheuser-Busch InBev, which processes malt in Idaho Falls; and to MillerCoors LLC, which trucks Idaho barley to Golden, Colo.

Purdy is vice chairman of the Idaho Barley Commission, which lobbies and advocates for barley growers. He says 2014 is shaping up to be another good year even as farmers shift 50,000 acres to wheat and other crops to take advantage of rising wheat prices and higher insurance payouts for failed crops.

"Prices are still strong, so we expect another year of increased barley cash receipts," Purdy says.

Brewery news USA, CA & NM: Black Diamond Brewing Company announces debut of its beers in New Mexico
Black Diamond Brewing Company of Concord, California announced on July 11 Black Diamond’s debut in New Mexico. Two tasting and meet the brewer events, July 15 and 16, 2014, introduced Black Diamond’s award-winning artisan beers.

“We used to do ridiculous things to get our beer to my parents and friends – like loading cases into friends’ cars for the trip from Concord to Albuquerque,” says Head Brewer Paul Mallory. “So of course it’s natural for us to come to New Mexico, where I’m from. Plus it’s meaningful for me to bring my beer to the place where my friends and family can drink and buy it.”

Black Diamond Brewing Company specializes in West Coast style, hop forward beers, Belgian style ales and barrel-aged beers. Its flagship brews are Rampage Imperial IPA, Peak XV Imperial Porter, and Moesaic Session IPA.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Black Diamond Brewing Company is an artisan’s brewery located 30 miles northeast of San Francisco in Concord, CA, near the confluence of the mighty Sacramento Delta rivers and the majestic Mt. Diablo. The brewery name comes from the local coalmines where, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, nearly 4 million tons of “black diamonds” were ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VT: Knotty Shamrock pub to start assembling its new brewery
Kevin Pecor, the owner of Northfield’s Knotty Shamrock pub was a very anxious man on July 10 afternoon. He was anxious because he was awaiting the arrival of what he called “the Christmas truck.”

That truck held the items that he needed to start assembling the new brewery adjacent to the Pub on East Street. “We are about to open a craft brewery and it will be named The Paine Mountain Brewing Company. It is named after Paine Mt. and Charles Paine, who founded the Central Vt. Railroad. We’re going to make craft beer and join the craft beer race,” Kevin said in an interview to The Northfield News while he was waiting for his “Christmas truck”.

There has been a lot of interior work done at the site of Northfield’s old Economy Store and now it is ready for the installation of the brewing equipment. “What we have done is rip down all the interior walls in the old Economy Store on East Street (and adjacent to the brewery) and we rebuilt the walls to build a brewery room, a dry storage room, a keg room, a keg washing room and a retail outlet in the front of the building, as ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault launches in north-western New Brunswick
Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault, a new brewery in the small francophone city of Edmundston in north-western New Brunswick, has officially launched with the release of one of its flagship brands, Canadian Beer News reported on July 15.

As announced recently on the brewery blog, Tante Blanche – a 4.7% abv Belgian-style wheat beer described as having “a delicately balanced nose hinting of citrus and coriander with a discreet spicy ending” – was put on tap at several bars and pubs in area on July 4th, and stubby bottles went on sale on July 14th at select ANBL locations, the Petit-Sault brewery store, and local licensed establishments.

Tante Blanche will soon be joined by a second core brand, Bob LeBoeuf, a 5.2% abv blond ale brewed with Saaz and Northern Brewer hops. Both beers are named after local legendary characters, as explained in an earlier Petit-Sault blog post.

Brewery news USA, TN: Blackhorse Pub & Brewery to increase production by about 15%
Blackhorse Pub & Brewery is expanding its brewing capacity to enhance the amount of beer it is selling at other locations, The Leaf Chronicle reported on July 15.

The Blackhorse is installing a 20-barrel fermenter, which will produce about 600 gallons of beer at a time. That will increase the Blackhorse’s production about 15 percent.

“We have been brewing beer here at the Blackhorse since 1995, and for the most part all the beer we always brewed we have sold right here in the Blackhorse,” said owner Jeff Robinson. “About a year ago we opened another brew pub in Knoxville, and in that one we put some extra capacity to try and be able to do a little distribution and get beer out into the marketplace.

“That is going pretty well over there, we are in about 70 different accounts in the Knoxville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge area,” Robinson said, “so we started to a little bit more of same thing over here, going into a few accounts around Clarksville. What that means is that we have got to expand capacity to brew more beer, so we can get it out there.”

The Blackhorse started with four 10-barrel fermenters. It added an 18-barrel last year, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA & OH: SweetWater Brewing Company expanding distribution to Ohio
A well-known Georgia brewer is moving into Ohio and it’s taking some of the competition back home with it, wcpo.com reported on July 15.

SweetWater Brewing Company of Atlanta is expanding its distribution to Ohio.

The company said recently that it pumped in $19 million to launch the effort. Ohio is the southern brewer’s northern-most distribution point. The beer should start flowing to the Buckeye State in September.

SweetWater is ranked in the top 20 of the nation’s breweries by sales volume according to the Brewer’s Association.

“While on a recent tour through Ohio, I could feel the energy and excitement throughout the state surrounding craft beer,” Jeff Chassner, director of new market business development at SweetWater Brewing Company, said via a release. “We feel now is the perfect time for us to tell our story and bring our award-winning brands to the Buckeye State to further complement their already established craft lineup.”

The company said it started expanding operations in 2012 and quadrupled overall capacity. The company is already selling its lineup in Kentucky. They hope to be in 12 states by the end of 2014.

The move also sees one of Cincinnati’s brewers heading down south to Atlanta. Mt. Carmel Brewing Company’s Patrick Clark ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Charlottesville’s South Street Brewery closed for remodelling till September
Local beer makers say discerning palates and unyielding interest and support for high-quality local food and drink are sustaining growth in the Charlottesville area’s brewing industry, The Daily Progress reported on July 13.

The latest changes to the local scene come via Blue Mountain Brewery, which recently purchased Charlottesville-based South Street Brewery. In operation for 16 years, South Street is closed for remodeling but will keep its name when the brewery and restaurant reopen in September, said Blue Mountain founder Taylor Smack.

“Craft beer has been very steadily becoming accepted as what beer is,” Smack said in an email. “It’s flavor and tradition, but it is also new and just plain good. A sense of hyper-localism is really allowing this industry to go wild too; craft beer at heart is about a smaller, localized product.”

In addition, an expanded tap system will be installed, and South Street beer also will be available “on tap in restaurants and in every sort of store that sells beer throughout Virginia,” he said.

“Our new distribution partnership with Virginia Eagle for this brand is allowing us to realize the dream of getting beer we make in more of our customers’ hands, and we’re overflowing with excitement to join ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & UK: AB InBev’s Goose Island signs new distribution agreement in the UK
AB InBev's operating unit in the United Kingdom has signed a new distribution agreement with Greene King to expand sales of Goose Island beer, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on July 15.

The new exclusive deal, effective in October, gives Greene King rights to distribute Goose Island Indian Pale Ale, Goose Island Honkers Ale and 312 Urban Wheat, among other beers, in England and Wales.

Belgium-based AB InBev acquired Goose Island, a Chicago-based craft brewer, in 2011 for $38.8 million and expanded its distribution in the U.S. to all 50 states last year. Goose Island's sales in the U.S. grew 62 percent in 2013, according to AB InBev, whose North American headquarters is in St. Louis.

"The partnership between Greene King, Goose Island and AB InBev will see ambitious plans for growth of the brand in the U.K. through up weighted support for the trade, including draught for the first time in the U.K., initially through our own pubs," Chris Houlton, managing director for Greene King Brewing & Brands, said in a statement. Goose Island is currently distributed in the U.K., but only in bottles.

Greene King, based in England, operates 2,300 pubs, restaurants and hotels and brews Greene King ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: St. Francis Brewing Co. hoping namesake community could help it with funds for expansion
St. Francis Brewing Co. is facing a $1.7 million gap in its financing plan for a new brewery and banquet hall, and city officials in its namesake community are considering the company's request for public cash, Journal Sentinel reported on July 15.

The city could provide money through a tax incremental financing district, with property taxes on the new $8.7 million development paying back those city funds, St. Francis Brewing owner Rick Michalski said.

He also said the city could authorize an industrial revenue bond sale to help finance the new brewery's equipment. Under that arrangement, the company's lender would accept a lower interest rate from St. Francis Brewing because the bonds would be exempt from federal and state income taxes.

The city would not be a lender or guarantor of that debt.

Michalski made a presentation to the St. Francis Community Development Authority's board at its meeting on July 14. The board entered closed session to discuss negotiations with the company, which is allowed under the state open meetings law.

Board members didn't act on the request, but will likely meet again after obtaining more information from the company, said Mayor CoryAnn St. Marie-Carls.

St. Francis Brewing opened in 2009 as a brewpub at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Full Sail Brewing files trademark infringement suit against law firm
Oregon-based brewery, Full Sail Brewing, has recently filed a trademark infringement suit against Sessions Law, an Atlanta-based practice that specializes in DUI defenses and vehicle-related homicides; the firm is led by attorney Ben Sessions, ipbrief.net reported on July 15.

The claim, which was filed on Tuesday, July 8th, argues that Sessions Law has been using the logo for Session Lager, one of Full Sail’s beers, to advertise their own DUI practice, which according to Full Sail creates a “direct and malicious connection” between the brand and DUIs.

Full Sail Brewery, also known as B.C. Marketing Concepts Inc., has been selling its Session Lager since 2005, using a diamond-shaped shield logo in red, with gray outline, and a cursive black font with the name of the beer. In the case the brewery filed against Sessions Law, the brewery claims that the law firm has been marketing its DUI-related services by using the same diamond-shaped shield logo in red and gray but with the name “Sessions Law” in it. Full Sail also claims that the Atlanta law firm is using this altered logo on brown paper bags, often used by beer consumers to carry drinks.

Full Sail argues in its complaint that it owns ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Government considering raise of tax rates on beer-like drinks
Japan’s government and the ruling bloc are considering raising tax rates on beer-like drinks, while cutting the tax rate on beer, lawmakers said July 15.

The tax change would be aimed at preventing tax revenues from falling further, amid growing sales of beer-like drinks, whose tax rates are much lower than on beer.

Prices on beer-like drinks are likely to rise, possibly sparking criticism from consumers who may also suffer from a 2-percentage-point consumption tax hike to 10 percent from October next year.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government and the ruling camp, led by Abe's Liberal Democratic Party, plan to incorporate the tax proposal in a tax reform blueprint for fiscal 2015, which is scheduled to be finalized at the end of this year.

The government raised the consumption tax rate by 3 percentage points to 8 percent on April 1 in an attempt to restore Japan's precarious fiscal health - the worst among major industrialized economies.

Under the current tax system, taxes on beer and beer-like drinks vary based on how much a beverage includes malt. The tax rate on beer is 77 yen for a 350 millimeter can, that on "happoshu" low-malt beer is 47 yen, and that on "third-category beer" is only ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Craft brewer wins trademark battle against SABMiller subsidiary
A Sydney craft brewery has won a trademark dispute against multinational SABMiller after the small brewery attempted to trade mark its beer brand name, Marketing reported on July 16. Sydney craft brewery Wayward Brewing Company has emerged victorious from its battle with multinational brewer SABMiller to register its trademark ‘WAYWARD’ as a beer brand in Australia.

The craft brewery has been engaged in a two-year dispute to register its trademark against SABMiller India, a subsidiary of the global brewing giant SABMiller.

Wayward Brewery founder Peter Philip applied for the name ‘WAYWARD’ under the Trade Marks Act 1995 in category 32 (beers and non-alcoholic beverages). SABMiller India opposed the filing on the grounds that the Wayward brand would be confused with its brand Haywards, a popular beer in India.

Philip says SABMiller India claimed a long list of grounds in their opposition to his application to register WAYWARD in Australia. “In evidence they relied upon reputation in their brands ‘Haywards 5000’ and ‘Haywards 2000’, asserting that Wayward Brewing’s use of WAYWARD for beer would confuse consumers in Australia,” he says.

IP Australia ruled this week that SABMiller India’s points of opposition were unsupported, ruling that insufficient reputation of the Haywards brand had been established in ...More info on site
